What do fans think about 'The First Time I Saw Him'?

While some people adored The Last Thing He Told Me and were quick to grant it 5 stars on Goodreads, other, more pedantic readers found the entire book to be one major plot hole in itself.
For those who haven’t gotten around to cracking open this thriller novel yet, the premise of The Last Thing He Told Me involves a seemingly picture-perfect family with a trail of life-altering secrets bubbling just underneath the surface. Eventually, these secrets implode, which leads to the father Owen’s abrupt disappearance. With no trace of his whereabouts, all Owen leaves behind is a cryptic note for his wife Hannah, with their daughter as the subject. The note says, in simple words, “Protect her.”
Of course, this leaves Hannah and her stepdaughter Bailey in panic mode, since they have no idea what these words mean or where Owen has run off to. Is he safe? Are they safe? What exactly did he mean by “protect her?” Does that mean they’re in danger? Hannah and Baily, starved for answers, go on a mission to find out. As they venture to solve the mystery that Owen left behind, they learn just how menacing their circumstances truly are.

While this book involves some interesting twists and turns as well as fun and engaging prose, many fans have pointed out how many plot holes are loaded in this book, which has ultimately led to mixed ratings.
One user took to Reddit to comment on their disapproval of The Last Thing He Told Me. “This book was an entire hole,” the user commented. “I just finished the audiobook, and I didn’t find any of the characters likable. I thought the whole plot line ended up being cheesy. Maybe my expectations were too high, as it seemed to have good reviews.”
Another commenter agreed, writing, “I disliked this book a lot. I simply couldn’t understand Hannah’s decision-making. Homegirl was LEAPING to conclusions.”
Will we get 'The Last Thing He Told Me' season 2?

Apple TV
The Last Thing He Told Me got renewed for season 2 in March 2024! However, according to Laura Dave, the sophomore season may not even be tied to her sequel novel. She told Us Weekly, that the show would be a "big surprise." She said, “There’s a wonderful team of writers in place, my husband is involved, but actually I don’t hear anything because it’s happening. I’m going to get to see all that a little bit later.”
Does that mean the book and the show will become mutually of one another? I guess only time (and our upcoming TV schedules) will tell!
Whether you loved the book or hated it, there’s no denying how gripping the sequel novel, The First Time I Saw Him, looks. You can read an exclusive passage from the second installment released by Laura Dave via People. I, for one, cannot wait to read it. And as for season 2 of the Apple TV hit? Well, we'll just have to wait and see!
