Color Block Your Sweets: Dip Dye Cookies

Everyone loves the classic sugar cookie and madeleine. But sometimes, it’s just so… vanilla. To add a little oomph to one of our favorite classic cookies, we added a fun burst of color. The result? A dip dye cookie and madeleine collection! Quite a mouthful isn’t it? Pun intended ;) This would be great change of pace for your 12 days of Christmas cookies collection as well.

We used store bought cookies, but you can also bake your own with pre-made dough or from scratch.

Ingredients:

– sugar cookies and madeleines

– 3 cups confectioner’s sugar

– 3 tsp light corn syrup

– 4 tb milk

– food coloring

First, we’re going to start off by making our custom colored icing.

In a large bowl, mix together the milk and the confectioner’s sugar. It’s going to be lumpy, but don’t worry. When it gets too lumpy to mix, slowly add in the corn syrup and keep mixing. You can see that it starts to smooth out and become glassy (bottom right picture). If it still seems too lumpy for your taste, add just a little more corn syrup. If you think it’s too think, add a little bit of milk. Be careful though, if it’s too thin, it’ll be hard for the icing to dry.

The finished icing.

Now, for the ombre madeleines and cookies! Separate your icing into three bowls (but don’t use all of it if you want to make different solid colored cookies later). In the first bowl, add a very small drop of gel food coloring. The coloring is very potent, so we used a toothpick to drop some coloring in. For each bowl, add the same amount plus a little bit more of the coloring from the previous bowl to create the gradient effect.

Then, dip your cookies in the “dye”! It’s so simple. If you’re afraid of getting icing everywhere, work on parchment paper or wax paper to ensure easy cleanup.

After making our ombre cookies, we started making solid colored icing. We mixed different gel colors with different batches of icing to create a multitude of colors. Then, dipped our cookies!

Put them on wax paper or parchment paper to dry.

Presenting… Dip Dye Cookies!

If you want the icing to dry faster, you can pop the cookies in the fridge for a few hours.

The ombre cookies. They would look great with our ombre tights.

These cookies are super fun and playful. Great for adults and kids!

Hardboiled eggs and jelly beans — it must be Easter! Sure, you can obsess over the Easter meal (which one of these gluten-free and Paleo-friendly brunch recipes to choose from?), but for our money, Easter sweets are where the party’s at. You can decorate elaborate Easter eggs, sure, even the galaxy variety, but what about channeling that creativity into decorating cookies. These 13 recipes will add a burst of colorful fun to your table, and they’re a lot tastier than a hollow milk chocolate bunny.

Anne Hathaway — you know, the Queen of Genovia herself — just officially joined TikTok, and it's so Mia Thermopolis-coded. We've already been lucky enough to witness her fun and flirty press tour for The Idea of You, where she stars opposite Nicholas Galitzine and says iconic things like "I'm a Scorpio; I know how I am on a Saturday night." Now, she's giving us a glimpse into the last four years of her life from her perspective. Take a look!

Anne Hathaway's First TikTok Post Is Too Perfect

www.tiktok.com

⏰⏰⏰⏰ 😳🫢🫡🤗

While many of us probably don't like to reminisce on 2020 itself (though I do sometimes miss the days of Tiger King and Tiktok being oh-so-new), Anne starts her journey right in the middle of the pandemic. Throughout the video, she gives us a sort of retrospective on her life...very similarly to Mia Thermopolis at the beginning of Princess Diaries 2. (I'll never forgive them for writing Michael out in the intro 😭) Here's what she detailed, with my own commentary on what she's referring to in parentheses. 😘

  • Made a movie about a lockdown in a lockdown (Locked Down)
  • Tapped into my Scorpio energy and became a witch (The Witches)
  • (We)Crashed (starring alongside Jared Leto)
  • (We)Met Again (running into Jared Leto at the Met Gala)
  • Wore pink in Rome (yes, THAT outfit)
  • Wore white in Cannes (the film festival)
  • Emerged from the Venice Canals dripping in Bulgari (yes, that OTHER outfit)
  • Tasted the rainbow (another fab 'fit)
  • CALMA, CALMA, CALMA (all the times she told paps to chill out)
  • Not calma (iconic dancing YAS)
  • Definitely nor calma (more The Witches realness)
  • Met Monique Eastwood (come on, exercise!)
  • Chopped my hair off (french girl bob goodness)
  • JK no I didn't (ok long hair slay)
  • Cried a lot (that's a water sign if I ever saw one)
  • Became besties with Donatella (oh, casual)
  • Gave cupcake eating lessons (this is the only way to actually eat a cupcake, TBH)
  • Got the world to primal scream (it's giving Claire Danes in Fleishman is in Trouble)
  • Went skiing with Moncler (I can barely walk in snow, let alone look good)
  • Kept being this person (HERSELF 🥹)
  • Had a Devil Wears Prada reunion (oh, we KNOW!)
  • Produced The Idea of You — and acted in it (everyone say, "Thank you, Annie!")
  • Went to SXSW (the outfits, again!!!)
  • Premiered The Idea of You in NY (cue 1989)
The video ends with her saying she forgot to join Tiktok — clearly because she was so dang busy with everything else! Needless to say, if this is the kind of content she's serving, I'm so in! (Especially if it ever entails showing off Princess Diaries 3updates!!!!!)

Peanut Butter M&M Cookies

Mexican Hot Chocolate Cookies

This make-ahead cookie dough recipe kind of borders brownie territory, which we are 100% here for. You'll get a mouthful of chocolate, with a fun hint of chili powder and cayenne that get at the real Mexican-inspired flavors. (via The Real Food Dietitians)

Red Velvet Fudge Cookies

Chewy and gooey, and reminiscent of our fave cake flavor, these red velvet cookies can be frozen solid for up to 1 month. We could see them being even tastier with some white chocolate drizzle! (via Whole and Heavenly Oven)

Matcha Cookies

Baking with matcha is so fun! You can prep this make-ahead cookie dough recipe a few weeks out if you're planning a party or have a bake sale on the calendar. It'll take you only 15 minutes of prep for a truly tasty payoff. (via Takes Two Eggs)

Thumbprint Cookies

This cookie dough recipe is fairly basic, taking on the flavors of whatever jam you choose. We'd recommend raspberry and peach! (via Culinary Hill)

Soft Peanut Butter Cookies

The key to making freeze-able cookie dough is choosing a recipe that’s full of fatty ingredients. The fat will allow the dough to still taste fresh weeks down the line. Case in point is this delightful peanut butter cookie recipe! (via Rachel Schultz)

Kitchen Sink Cookies

Kitchen sink cookies are the best! You can basically throw whatever you want into the dough, but we prefer chocolate chips, potato chips, pretzel pieces, and nuts. This recipe leverages butterscotch, too, and finishes everything off with a pinch of flaky sea salt. Yummm. (via Completely Delicious)

Loaded Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies

Sure, this freezable cookie dough is made with oatmeal, but don’t you dare call these rich, buttery cookies a health food! They’re far too yummy for that. And they happen to call for an entire stick of butter, so you know they’re going to be decadent. (via Averie Cooks)

Lemon Butter Cookies

Lemon lovers everywhere will appreciate the sweet, lemony goodness of these buttery make-ahead cookies. They also happen to only call for a few select ingredients for baking with ease: lemon juice, lemon zest, butter, sugar, eggs and flour! (via Simply Whisked)

Butter Pecan Cookies

Not only is this recipe totally okay to make ahead of time, but the recipe actually requires it. This cookie dough needs to chill for at least three days, so why not whip it up to have on-hand any time you’re feeling the need for cookies? (via Sally’s Baking Addiction)

Healthy Oatmeal Raisin Cookies

Sometimes you're craving to go down the healthier route when it comes to cookie time, and these oatmeal + raisin-packed ones are the ultimate solution. This cookie dough recipe is make-ahead and freezer-friendly. When you're ready to bake them, let the dough thaw out at room temp for an hour, and you're ready to go! You can also freeze after baking, if you wish! (via Vanilla and Bean)

Disneyland’s Peanut Butter Cookies

This copycat recipe recreates the big, fluffy peanut butter cookies you can find on Main Street USA in Disneyland. Interspersed throughout the doughy, buttery cookies are peanut butter chips, which set them apart from your average peanut butter cookie. (via Six Sisters Stuff)

Butter Cookies

This butter cookie recipe is super soft and creamy, so it’s great for freezing ahead. Bonus: it’s also perfect for cutting into fun shapes, making it super appropriate for kids to make along. Don't forget to make some icing to decorate them! (via Life As Mama)

Perfect Sugar Cookies

These Lofthouse-like sugar cookies are sweet, soft, doughy and perfect for topping with frosting once they cool after baking. The freezable dough is just as good on it's own, if you catch our drift! (via Chef in Training)

Vanilla Bean Danish Butter Cookies

Vanilla bean is the star ingredient in these Danish cookies. Freeze the dough, let it thaw, and then use a piping bag to create pretty circle shapes before baking! (via Ashlee Marie)

Peanut Butter Blossom Cookies

Make this make-ahead cookie dough recipe a few days in advance, but leave the chocolate kisses for adding in at the end. Hershey’s kisses, peanut butter, brown sugar, butter and vanilla extract comprise the flavors of these classic cookies! (via The Semi Sweet Sisters)

Gooey Butter Cookies

These doughy cookies pull gently apart in the oven, creating a crinkle-like texture on top. But inside? It’s pure softness. Be sure to lightly coat the cookies with powdered sugar before baking to create the crinkle effect. (via How to Nest for Less)

Bakery-Style Chocolate Chip Cookies

Finally, these chocolate chip cookies are the perfect perennial favorite to store in the fridge before baking! We’ll also leave you with one final tip: when freezing cookie dough, it’s best to shape the cookies into individual portions and pop them in the fridge for about 30 minutes to harden. Then, stack them on top of each other, with sheets of parchment paper between each level. Put them into a freezer-safe bag, and chill. (via Tastes of Lizzie T)
