Try This Easy Photo Display DIY to Spruce Up Your Dorm Room

You probably know how much we love well-decorated rooms and colorful pieces of furniture. Well, girls, dorm rooms are no different. Just because you’re living in a tiny space for a few months, doesn’t mean you can’t add some chic (yet affordable!) dorm decor to your space and express your style from floor to ceiling! So if you’ve already spent your summer money on cute clothes, textbooks and ’90s-inspired clogs and mules, check out this inexpensive DIY to decorate your workspace with photos.

Materials and Tools:

— hula hoop

— photos

— ruler

— scissors

— pen

— ribbon

— copper spray paint

— glue gun

— A4 card stock

Instructions:

1. Protect your surface, then spray paint your hula hoop. Let it completely dry.

2. Use your pen and ruler to draw a 5 x 5-inch square on a colorful piece of card stock and cut it.

3. Repeat to create 15 more square pieces. Use different colored card stock to create an ombre effect.

4. Glue the 9 x 9-inch photos onto the card stock.

5. Take the ribbon and cut into four pieces. Then glue it to the hula hoop as shown below.

6. Glue the photos to the ribbons and you’re ready to hang your brand new photo display.

First, protect your surface and spray paint the hula hoop using a metallic shade. If you are concerned about ruining your manicure or any rings, I suggest you wear plastic gloves. Next, use a pen or pencil and a ruler to draw a 5 x 5-inch square on a colorful card stock. Cut it out and repeat to create some more squares. I decided to use some dark blue, light blue and white card stock to create an ombre effect, but you can definitely opt for any shade you like.

At this point, glue the 9 x 9-inch photos onto the cardboard, then take the ribbon, cut in four and glue to the hula hoop as shown above. Last, glue the photos to the ribbons, and you’re done!

Hang it close to your desktop and you’ll brighten up your study space in no time!

When you walk into a multi-million dollar home, you know it. Everything feels shiny, new, somehow cleaner than you’d ever thought possible, and you’re left feeling…less than.

Of course your home could look like that if you too forked over a small inheritance for flooring and light fixtures. But if you ask me: there’s absolutely no fun in that. Anyone can make a home look ready for HGTV with a six-figure budget, but the real heroes do it for a fraction and make you think it costs much much more.

Replying to @brandflakes34 “I am shocked” is my favorite reaction

I’m a budget girly through and through and what I’ve found is that when done right, budget products look just as good as those designer labels. When it comes to your home, there’s plenty of tips and tricks to elevate your space from blah to banging and if you stick with me, you’ll find that your wallet doesn’t have to suffer in order to do so.

As you're making your house a home, consider these hacks to flex your home’s beauty without breaking the bank.

This seems far too simple to be true and yet, people are blown away by what raising your curtains up a few inches can do. Not only do longer, fuller curtains look more expensive and luxurious, they draw the eye up, making your space feel larger and grander.

Bonus points for a pinched pleat:

The “pinched pleat” style of curtains are often expensive and over-priced. You can create this same look with ordinary curtains and a little ingenuity. @ayeyiathome shows how a few simple supplies can take your standard curtains to the next level with this easy DIY project.

2. Never Underestimate Lighting

www.tiktok.com

All products linked in my bio 🤎 #homedecor #tiptok #interiordesign #hometips #decortips #amazonfinds #amazonmusthaves #amazonfavorites

Lighting is usually the last thing people think about in a space. Mostly because it feels so permanent and inconsequential, but it makes a huge impact on your space in reality. Adding lamps around your home, rather than using the overhead light creates a cozier, intimate vibe. Utilize lighting as accents and accessories to your existing decor, like highlighting art with a picture light.

Should have said hack not trick bc those 3 words in a row kept messing me up 🤣🤣🤣 #diyhack #diyhacks #pucklighthack #pucklights #drybar #wetbarideas #diydrybar
Try this hack:

Upgrade your corded, plug-in lights for a sleek, “wall-mount” look sans all the electrical work with puck lights. These battery-operated (or sometimes rechargeable) lights work in any lamp to provide light without having to be hard-wired into the wall.

3. Swap Out Store-Bought Bottles For This Matching Set

Get the designer look for less 👊🏼#homedecor #homeinspo #diyhomedecor #stylehacks #homedecorhacks

All of those perfect, Instagrammable homes we love are usually meticulously organized, but perhaps more importantly… nothing is ever in its original packaging. Swapping out your store-bought bottles of haircare or even pantry items, with matching containers will instantly upgrade your space for much less than you might expect.

4. Find The Right Size Rug

www.tiktok.com

#homedecor #rugs #livingroom #hometips #interiordecor

Odd are, your rugs are too small. Disproportionate rooms, even those that are decorated with expensive pieces, can feel a little off and disheveled. The right size rug for a room will ground your design and pull the entire space together.

5. Fill Your Walls With The Right Proportions

Tap like if it’s useful! 💙 #wallart #wallarttips #homedecortips #homedesigntips #katekerditips #designtips

In the comments of this video, @katekerdiinteriors admits “design is a lot about math, whether we like it or not,” and decorating the walls in your space is a perfect example of this. It feels easy to add a piece of art or photo gallery to a blank wall, but using this simple math equation will help you pick art that makes your space feel more expensive.

Quick Math:
  1. To find the correct size range of art for your wall, first measure the wall.
  2. Once you have your measurements, you'll want to multiply both the height and width by 0.6 to get the lower end of the range.
  3. For the higher end of the range, multiply the height and width by 0.75.

Bonus tip:

Utilize blank wall space to reflect light with mirrors. This will make your room feel larger and more airy without a huge monetary or time investment.

6. Look Up — Don't Leave Your Ceilings Hanging

There are so many budget-friendly products on the market that can be installed easily to steal the show in any room.

7. Don't Forget The Outside

The very idea of updating the exterior of my home feels extremely daunting, but the truth is, there are so many affordable (and shockingly simple) additions to your home that will boost the curb appeal immediately. These rain gutter chains are like earrings for your home and look how pretty she looks! Other quick fixes like magnetic garage hardware or cedar shutters accessorize your home to enhance its beauty.

8. Incorporate Natural Stone

Luxury materials will always make a space feel high-end, but they come with a designer price tag. Incorporating small samples of those materials, like marble, travertine, and natural wood, is a cost-effective way to strengthen a room. Marble coasters, vases, and candlestick holders are low-cost accessories with an elegant impact.

Don't get us wrong - we love the coastal grandmother trend just as much as we love *alll* Nancy Meyers movies. Crisp, white accents, slip-covered sofas, tons of natural light - yes, yes, and yes! But we're also obsessed with this blend of California modern mixed with subtle coastal details from LA-based designer Christine Vroom.

Guided by the philosophy of "beauty meets function," Christine blends timeless design with a fashion-forward attention to detail, and we are crushin.' Here, she offers up simple ways to get this fresh, summery look in your home for when it's time for a seasonal refresh.

Start With A Crisp White Paint

A clean canvas can accentuate the light in your space and give it a modern albeit fresh, coastal vibe. There is a seemingly endless array of white hues you can buy but sometimes they can look too hot or too cold, depending on your individual lighting. Christine's go-to white paint? Superwhite by Sherwin Williams. Make sure to test a sample in your space first.

Use A Minimalist Color Palette

Once you have your white down, add neutrals and coastal tones. "I would recommend whites, creams, greige, taupe and add in some soft blues and/or navy," says Christine. "Keep it really easy breezy with your palette."

Add Natural Textures

"Incorporate small doses of natural textures like hemp, wovens, rattans and jutes, which add a little bit of that organic, beachy feel without going overboard," says Christine. That goes for the rug too. Change up for something minimal and natural-looking. "Maybe it's a cozy shag, a jute/wool blend, or even a simple textured neutral," she adds.

Swap Your Art

Here's where you can score some beautiful beach-inspired prints that don't scream coastal '80s. "Coastal art, beach photography and tone-on-tone paintings can bring a really calming sense throughout your space," says Christine.

Add Faux Or Live Botanicals

Christine recommends adding eucalyptus or a palm to create an indoor/outdoor feel. There are plenty of realistic faux options (like this potted olive treefrom Pottery Barn) or make sure the real tree you find was grown to be indoors.

Go for Laid-Back Window Treatments

"If your budget allows, add wall treatments like shiplap or a grasscloth wall covering," says Christine. A fresh linen stripe also nods to a coastal classic.

Add A Pop of Blue

With coastal blues, almost anything goes, from crystal blue and aqua waters to the deep dark sea.

Welcome In Natural Light

Allow all the natural light you can to shine through wherever possible. "Use simple white linen drapes to frame windows and either French or sliding doors to let the natural sunlight pour in," says Christine. The blend of natural light, classic blue island and white on white in this kitchen is the modern take of our coastal decor dreams. Just lovely!

I have such a love/hate relationship with haircuts. While I love the feeling of a fresh look as much as the next girl, I hate having to spend $100+ for a simple cut and blow dry session. During my recent trim, I talked with my hairdresser, Jack Rehak of Jack’s Hair Design in Hinsdale, Illinois, about ways to keep a haircut looking new and best practices for keeping hair healthy. Here's what he had to say!

Here's How Often You Should Cut Your Hair, According To Professionals

I’ll admit it — it had been eight months since my last haircut. My hair had lost its shape, my layers were nowhere to be found, and my ends were begging for mercy. Life got busy over the last few months and I was neglecting my haircare like never before.

My hairdresser could immediately see that I was beyond due for a cut and said I needed to get more taken off than I was hoping. I was definitely disappointed — I'd been working on growing out my hair for a while now, and it just felt like my hard work had completely gone to waste. He explained that getting consistent haircuts is the key to growing out healthy and strong hair, rather than letting it grow and grow until it eventually breaks. So let's dig into the top three things you can do to avoid this scenario!

1. Just Get The Dang Haircut

Also avoiding a haircut like I was? You might want to schedule one at your nearest salon. Like my stylist said, when you wait too long between trims like I did, you risk your hair becoming heavy, dull, and lifeless. When the hair is dry or even dead, it’s nearly impossible for it to hold a curl or style, essentially collapsing on you and taking on more and more heat damage all the while. I know the pain of spending time on a blowout only for it to fall minutes later — it’s the worst.

According to Jack, getting a haircut every 10-12 weeks is the best time frame or your ends will pay the price. Between blow-drying, curling, straightening, sun, and weather, our ends get dry and start to break without the proper care. Getting consistent haircuts allows hair to bounce back, shine, and perform the way we want in a healthy way.

2. Leave-In Conditioners Are Your Friend

His top piece of advice to keep your hair looking and feeling hydrated between trims? Invest in conditioning treatments. Jack swears by the Olaplex conditioning system, specifically the No 3 Hair Perfector. Made with patented OLAPLEX Bond Building Technology™, this conditioning treatment repairs and prevents damage in as little as three minutes. No 3 promises to reduce breakage and visibly strengthen hair, so it’s the perfect assistance to keep ends fresh between cuts. Another conditioning treatments I’ve used and loved for years is the Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask, which is designed to restore moisture, elasticity, and shine to dry hair.

3. Switch Up Your Shampoos

Switching shampoos frequently is a pretty hot tip that I honestly hadn't thought of. Our hair gets used to the same products and grows tired of them, resulting in lackluster locks. Jack’s advice is to switch brands after finishing every bottle of shampoo to bring life back to your hair. Have two brands that you’re loyal to? Even switching back and forth between them after every bottle should make a big difference in your hair. I’m a huge fan of the R+Co Dallas Biotin Thickening Shampoo, which makes my hair look thick and full, as well as the Moroccanoil Hydrating Shampoo, which is so hydrating and gives so much shine.

In the end, navigating your back-and-forth relationship with haircuts often feels like a rollercoaster ride between wanting that fresh look and cringing at the receipt. Luckily, by using conditioning treatments and switching up your products,, you can keep your locks healthy, shiny, and full of life between trims. But take a newly learned lesson out of my book: don't let your ends pay the price for procrastination and just book the haircut.
