Eat These Foods Before Bed to Get a Better Night’s Sleep

How you eat affects so many of parts of your life, but did you ever wonder how it might influence your sleep quality and patterns? We know all about sleeping clean (thanks to health queen Gwyneth Paltrow) and how using screens at night can throw off our sleep patterns, but it turns out that what and when you eat can also have a major impact on your shut-eye. We chatted with a couple of experts to find out what food choices will help us get a good night’s sleep.

What You Eat Before Bed Matters

You might not think about how your last meal of the day affects your sleep, but nutritional biochemist and author Shawn Talbott, PhD, gave us the deets: “Diet can be extremely important for sleep quality. Eating the wrong things can interfere with our ability to fall asleep, stay asleep, and get good quality sleep.” On the other hand, eating the right things during the day and before bed can actually improve the quality of our sleep. Dr. Nada Milosavljevic, a Harvard-trained physician with expertise in both traditional and integrative medicine, agrees. “What you eat or drink hours before sleep can create breakdown products that impact and stimulate the brain to impede sleep,” she explains.

What to Skip at Bedtime

Dr. Milosavljevic recommends staying away from foods high in protein or fat and anything caffeinated before you turn in. “Let’s say you eat a high-protein food before sleep,” she offers. “It takes a lot of digestive power to break down that food, and your digestive juices are activated. Your GI tract requires energy and is fully engaged in the process, which requires blood flow to be directed to that part of the body.” When she puts it like that, it makes total sense that it’s tougher to fall asleep when your body is working hard to digest what you just ate.

Talbott points out that stimulants can also have a bigger impact than we might expect. “Many find it surprising that stimulants (like caffeine and nicotine) can stay in your system for up to eight hours, depending on the person and the amount,” he shares. So if you’re having trouble falling asleep despite the late hour, the culprit could be your afternoon latte. Other things to stay away from? Spicy foods can cause your stomach to secrete acid, which in turn can cause heartburn and acid reflux, making it hard to get comfortable enough to drift off. It’s also not a great idea to eat a lot just before turning in: Talbott recommends putting a two-to-three-hour window between your last big meal and your bedtime. “Eating too much can put pressure on the diaphragm, making it difficult for some people to inhale and exhale fully,” he explains. “The lack of oxygen makes it difficult to relax and fall asleep, and it may make nighttime awakenings more common.”

Foods That Can Actually Help You Sleep Better

Just because you shouldn’t eat dinner right before bed doesn’t mean you can’t have a snack. (Yay for snacks!) “I actually LIKE people to eat something before bed,” Talbott clarifies — just not a *huge,* meal-sized amount of food. Eating the right kind of snack can help you “relax, fall asleep faster, stay asleep longer, and get into the deeper stages of restorative sleep.” His go-to pre-bedtime snack is an oatmeal cookie, a handful of cherries, and a glass of milk or herbal tea.

“The oatmeal and cherries help the body to make more of its own melatonin as needed,” Talbot explains, “and they both also contain just enough sugar — about 10 to 20 grams, or 40 to 80 calories — to help the brain relax.” The small dose of sugar can help enhance the entry of tryptophan into your brain (you know, that sleepy amino acid you always hear about around Thanksgiving). As for milk, it contains a protein chain that helps you feel more relaxed. We knew that whole thing about having a glass of milk before bed wasn’t totally bunk! Lastly, herbal teas like chamomile, lavender, and lemon can help relax you, though Talbott points out they’re not powerful enough to put you to sleep on their own.

If you don’t love the idea of this particular snack, Talbott’s suggested alternatives are fruit-sweetened yogurt with granola, cheese and crackers, or bananas and dark chocolate. Next time you’re wondering what you can nosh before bed that won’t mess with your REM cycles, give one of these options a try!

The Wellnesss Girlies™ on the internet are at it again – this time with a sip known as the Sleepy Girl Mocktail. The mocktaildrink is made with only three ingredients, and is said to facilitate deep, high-quality sleep when sipped right before bedtime. I put this trending nighttime Sleepy Girl Mocktail recipe to the test so you can feel it out for yourself.

Scroll along for the Sleepy Girl Mocktail recipe and how it can help you get in some good shut-eye!

What is the Sleepy Girl Mocktail?

Image via Anna Tukhfatullina Food Photographer/Stylist / PEXELS

The Sleepy Girl Mocktail is a tart cherry juice mocktail that originates from TikTok. Holistic health influencers and athletes have been praising the concoction for its benefits in aiding restful sleep and healthy digestion.

“The wellness world is obsessing over finding ways to get better and more regular sleep,” says Lainie from @lainiecooks on TikTok. “I think this trend will start moving into daily habits you can change for optimal sleep, and what foods you can eat that contain natural melatonin or high levels of magnesium to help you unwind, relax, and lower cortisol levels."

Why is the Sleepy Girl Mocktail good for sleep?

The traditional recipe for the Sleepy Girl Mocktail is tart cherry juice, magnesium glycinate powder, and Olipop (or any sparkling drink – but I personally love Olipop for its gut health benefits). The drink promotes the body’s melatonin production to support sleep, says Dr. Renee Korczak, Ph.D., RDN, CSSD, LD.

“Tart cherries, which as most people don’t know, are filled with a lot of nutrients, like antioxidants, anthocyanins, and notably for this use case, melatonin,” says Dr. Korczak. “Melatonin strongly affects the human sleep-wake cycle to help support sleep.”

When combined with magnesium glycinate, the drink’s effects are, well, more effective for sleep.

“Magnesium is a mineral with several functions, as it assists with hundreds of enzymatic bodily reactions like energy production, protein synthesis, muscle contractions, and more,” says Dr. Korczak. “In terms of sleep, magnesium can help regulate certain neurotransmitters, or chemical messengers that relay messages between nerve cells in your brain.”

Before taking a sip, it’s important to evaluate your needs for supplemental magnesium. It’s a good idea to talk with your doctor about any intake concerns, especially since magnesium can impact other medications you may be taking. Further, you can get in magnesium organically by snacking on fruits, nuts, chia seeds, and even dark chocolate!

How can I get better sleep?

According to Dr. Korczak, insufficient sleep and poor sleep quality are common issues amongst many Americans. She shared a few tips to consider before reaching for that tart cherry juice to make the mocktail:

  1. Establish a regular bedtime.
  2. Create a restful environment, and limit the use of devices and TV watching before bed.
  3. Don’t overeat before you go to bed. Also, don't go to bed hungry, and avoid alcohol and / or caffeine prior to bed, as these can interfere with sleep.

The Viral Sleepy Girl Mocktail Recipe

What you'll need:
How to make the Sleepy Girl Mocktail:
  1. Pour the tart cherry juice in a glass over ice.
  2. Add the magnesium glycinate powder, and stir until fully dissolved.
  3. Top your Sleepy Girl Mocktail off with Olipop for added digestive benefits, and sip your way to good sleep!

Did the magnesium-filled Sleepy Girl Mocktail actually help me sleep?

I am truly a Sleepy Girl by nature. I think I could fall asleep just about anywhere if I was tired enough, but figured I would try the mocktail recipe to see if it really could boost my tiredness and send me off into a peaceful night’s sleep.

Making the tart cherry mocktail was terribly easy. I slowly sipped it about an hour before bedtime, when I already felt the sleepies kicking in. The taste was super tart, thanks to the cherry juice, but it wasn’t painfully sour. I definitely plan to play around with the juice-to-Olipop ratio next time I make it!

Upon waking the next morning, I didn’t feel like my sleep was wildly transformed – but I did sleep good. I can likely attribute that to the regular sleep schedule I’ve been on for months now, so I can’t speak on the mocktail’s effects too strongly. It was delicious, though, and I could see myself sipping it whenever I’m craving a yummy nighttime drink.

I’m no expert, but I imagine this drink is super beneficial for those struggling with sleep already. If you’re having issues maintaining a regular sleep schedule, the Sleepy Girl Mocktail is perfect for you!

Overall, the Sleepy Girl Mocktail earns an 8/10 for me.

I have such a love/hate relationship with haircuts. While I love the feeling of a fresh look as much as the next girl, I hate having to spend $100+ for a simple cut and blow dry session. During my recent trim, I talked with my hairdresser, Jack Rehak of Jack’s Hair Design in Hinsdale, Illinois, about ways to keep a haircut looking new and best practices for keeping hair healthy. Here's what he had to say!

Here's How Often You Should Cut Your Hair, According To Professionals

I’ll admit it — it had been eight months since my last haircut. My hair had lost its shape, my layers were nowhere to be found, and my ends were begging for mercy. Life got busy over the last few months and I was neglecting my haircare like never before.

My hairdresser could immediately see that I was beyond due for a cut and said I needed to get more taken off than I was hoping. I was definitely disappointed — I'd been working on growing out my hair for a while now, and it just felt like my hard work had completely gone to waste. He explained that getting consistent haircuts is the key to growing out healthy and strong hair, rather than letting it grow and grow until it eventually breaks. So let's dig into the top three things you can do to avoid this scenario!

1. Just Get The Dang Haircut

Also avoiding a haircut like I was? You might want to schedule one at your nearest salon. Like my stylist said, when you wait too long between trims like I did, you risk your hair becoming heavy, dull, and lifeless. When the hair is dry or even dead, it’s nearly impossible for it to hold a curl or style, essentially collapsing on you and taking on more and more heat damage all the while. I know the pain of spending time on a blowout only for it to fall minutes later — it’s the worst.

According to Jack, getting a haircut every 10-12 weeks is the best time frame or your ends will pay the price. Between blow-drying, curling, straightening, sun, and weather, our ends get dry and start to break without the proper care. Getting consistent haircuts allows hair to bounce back, shine, and perform the way we want in a healthy way.

2. Leave-In Conditioners Are Your Friend

His top piece of advice to keep your hair looking and feeling hydrated between trims? Invest in conditioning treatments. Jack swears by the Olaplex conditioning system, specifically the No 3 Hair Perfector. Made with patented OLAPLEX Bond Building Technology™, this conditioning treatment repairs and prevents damage in as little as three minutes. No 3 promises to reduce breakage and visibly strengthen hair, so it’s the perfect assistance to keep ends fresh between cuts. Another conditioning treatments I’ve used and loved for years is the Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask, which is designed to restore moisture, elasticity, and shine to dry hair.

3. Switch Up Your Shampoos

Switching shampoos frequently is a pretty hot tip that I honestly hadn't thought of. Our hair gets used to the same products and grows tired of them, resulting in lackluster locks. Jack’s advice is to switch brands after finishing every bottle of shampoo to bring life back to your hair. Have two brands that you’re loyal to? Even switching back and forth between them after every bottle should make a big difference in your hair. I’m a huge fan of the R+Co Dallas Biotin Thickening Shampoo, which makes my hair look thick and full, as well as the Moroccanoil Hydrating Shampoo, which is so hydrating and gives so much shine.

In the end, navigating your back-and-forth relationship with haircuts often feels like a rollercoaster ride between wanting that fresh look and cringing at the receipt. Luckily, by using conditioning treatments and switching up your products,, you can keep your locks healthy, shiny, and full of life between trims. But take a newly learned lesson out of my book: don't let your ends pay the price for procrastination and just book the haircut.
