10 Successful Women Share Their Best Advice for Chasing Your Dreams

The start of a new year always means looking at what goals, resolutions, and dreams you’d like to tackle in the coming months. Perhaps you want to revamp your office desk, or you’re on the hunt for a new job. One thing is for sure: A tribe of badass women out there are doing what they love for a living, and we can always learn from what they’ve done to get there. In our How to Quit Your Day Job series, we’ve chatted with dozens of movers and shakers — from artists to the CEOs of BaubleBar — about how they’ve made their dreams come true through long hours, guts, and unending drive. Below, 10 dreamers and doers share their best advice for hitting your goals and more.

1. Create your own school. While working full-time, Emily Ley, the organization guru behind the Simplified Planner and Emily Ley Paper, started making stationery on the side, teaching herself how to create a website using YouTube tutorials. “I would stay up very late trying to create my own website. I Googled all sorts of questions and educated myself as best as I could to start small, but smart,” says Ley. She was so excited to learn that it didn’t matter that she was devoting her free time to learning about her passion project. (Photo via Laura Foote)

2. It’s okay to fail. Disney screenwriter Victoria Strouse, who penned Finding Dory, stresses that she’s failed a lot in her career. “I have failed in scene writing. I have failed an entire script. I have failed selling scripts. I have failed getting movies made. I’ve failed pitching shows. I have failed so much that to say it’s part of the job is almost laughable,” says Strouse. “The expression ‘writing is rewriting’ is true. To make something good, you have to hone it and hone it and hone it.” (Photo via Jason LaVeris/Getty)

3. Don’t worry about everyone liking you. From the start, Cora Harrington was clear about what she wanted her blog The Lingerie Addict to be, but not everyone else was on board. Initially, a lot of lingerie brands didn’t want to talk with The Lingerie Addict because it didn’t have the right look, so Cora focused on her readers instead. “What a shame it would have been to stop in those early days because other people disliked my blog. Be nice, but don’t worry too much about everyone liking you,” says Cora. Now, her six-figure fashion blog is the go-to in the lingerie industry. (Photo via Coco Haus Photography)

4. Take baby steps toward your dream.Melissa Ben-Ishay, founder of Baked by Melissa, makes it clear that her success wasn’t achieved overnight, but instead was built on small steps that she took over time. “Do one thing every day that moves you forward,” says Ben-Ishay. After Melissa was fired from her advertising job, she still interviewed for full-time ad gigs while working on Baked by Melissa. “Every day I took steps toward my goal of making my company a success, while keeping a realistic outlook and doing everything I could to continue to be employed.” (Photo via Baked by Melissa)

5. Swap skills with a friend. If you’re a pro at painting nails, but want to learn some business skills, approach a friend who has those talents and offer her free manicures in exchange for business advice. That’s what Jin Soon Choi, the founder of the famed Jin Soon Hand and Foot Spa in NYC and the creator of the JINsoon nail lacquer line, did when she was first starting out and wanted to learn English. “A friend, with whom I exchanged manicures for English lessons, helped me secure my first lease for a salon, which is how I met my architect husband, who designed and built all of my salons,” says Soon. 6. Challenge the status quo. Before Amy Jain and Daniella Yacobovsky started BaubleBar, they had no background in fashion or jewelry, but they didn’t let that stop them. They were passionate about accessories and saw a void when their shopping needs weren’t met. “Don’t be afraid to challenge the status quo, as every great company starts out as a crazy idea! Deciding we were going to do it ourselves and start BaubleBar meant getting over our fear of the unknown and going for it,” says Yacobovsky. (Photo via via BaubleBar)

7. Give yourself a physical challenge.Ellen Bennett, a former cook who created a chef’s line of custom aprons with Hedley & Bennett, challenges herself by signing up to do things that are out of her comfort zone. “I’ll sign up for a ridiculous, crazy, over-the-top physical challenge, like a 300-mile bike ride, or a triathlon or marathon — all things that have happened in the last few years! Extreme sports push you so significantly past your comfort zone that you prove to yourself that you can do it, beyond the point that you think you can,” says Bennett. (Photo via Lily Glass)

8. Nevertheless, persist.Whitney Port and her co-CEO Laurenne Resnik run Bloom2Bloom together and share that if you want to start your dream business, be persistent. Resnik suggests, “Find that balance between being unbelievably relentless in making your vision become a reality and in having the patience it takes to learn from your own mistakes and from others who want to help you.” She shares that being persistent is essential, but the ability to step back and see what you’re doing from multiple perspectives is also helpful. 9. Don’t be afraid to be the only woman. “I spent a lot of years being the only girl in a class, a band, in a group, at a meet-up, etc,” says artist and illustrator Stacy Michelson, a freelance food illustrator who runs a successful Etsy shop. “Maybe I always believed that the kind of artsy things I liked weren’t necessarily feminine or masculine, or maybe I just had great teachers and role models who never treated me differently. All I know is there are so many things I’m really glad I did, even when I looked around and said to myself, “Hmm, it’s all dudes here and me. Weird.” (Photo via Camellia Tse)

10. Light that fire.Jala Smith-Huys, founder of Seek & Swoon, admits that it took her a long time to finally make the jump to start her line of eco-friendly throws. “I spent over a decade fearing the leap. I think I finally got so fed up with my fear (and my own failure to launch) that it lit a fire under me that I couldn’t ignore,” Smith-Huys admits. Her best advice for beating the fear: “Trust your gut, find your tribe, and just do it.” (Photo via Billy Huys)

A Cinderella Story isn't just a movie — it's honestly a cultural moment. The costume montage, the spastic colons and synchronized swimming, the rain in this drought... even Gavin Degraw singing over the One Tree Hilltrailer on the DVD stand out! Everything about this film is iconically ingrained in our collective conscious, making Hilary Duff and Chad Michael Murray the Y2k blueprint for many of the "It" pairings we know and love today.

We last left our Princeton royalty preparing for their freshman year of college, dreaming of happily-ever-after — or at least graduation — and that was that! But in this era of reboots, I've often wondered what happened to our OG tortured poets after the credits rolled. Luckily, I'm not the only one! Chad Michael Murray just tee'd up a sequel, and yes that's me you hear squealing right now. Here's everything we know about what's to come for everyone's fave modern fairytale!

Is there a part two to a Cinderella story?

Photo via Warner Bros Entertainment Inc

There's Another Cinderella Story, starring Selena Gomez and Drew Seeley, but that's more so a part of a series of "Cinderella stories" rather than an actual sequel. So far, we haven't gotten a follow-up on our Princeton-bound faves.

Has "A Cinderella Story 2" been announced?

There's been no formal announcement yet, but that doesn't mean all hope is lost. During his press tour for Mother of the Bride, Chad Michael Murray told ETthat he's definitely interested in bringing Austin Ames back. He said that even his daughter told him, "You need to make another one of these, Daddy," after she watched A Cinderella Story for the first time.

His response to the idea? "Here you go, Hil. From me to you, let's do it!" — referring to Hilary Duff, of course! The timing couldn't be better either, given that Hilary just gave birth to her fourth child and could hypothetically be available to film in the coming months...just saying!

Again, there's no official information about this project yet, but with a main piece of the puzzle on board, we're one step closer to my own personal happily-ever-after — a real sequel to A Cinderella Story once and for all.

Home decor and wellness creator Kelly Marcelo always wanted to be her own boss. “I never really wanted to have a job where I wouldn't be in control,” she says. She started a wedding photography business in college, added a photo booth rental business, and launched a t-shirt business with her brother. When the pandemic put events to a halt, she found herself at a crossroads. What to do next?

She decided to pour herself into her passion for home decor. She started posting several times a day on TikTok and finding a new outlet for her creativity. Within a few months, she had 10K followers, steadily built her following and hired a manager, and was recently chosen to decorate the White House for the holidays. “You have to ask that question, well, why not me?,” she says.

Check out Kelly’s colorful and creative world and how she’s making every move count in her business with the help of TurboTax, so she can focus on what she loves to do!

Don’t Wait for Perfection. In the first month of launch, Kelly’s goal was to post three times a day. “I was really trying to focus on getting as much out there at first, but then also being able to get that information to see what worked with people,” she recalls. That market research allowed her to build an audience, learn what her audience craved, and focus on the wins. “It was very intense at the beginning, and then I eased back. I'm like, ‘Okay, let me breathe, because it was not sustainable at all.’”

Refine and Strategize. To avoid burnout, she slowed her pace and stepped back to focus on the bigger picture. “I didn't pressure myself once I was on solid ground. I decided to focus more on refining the content, making it for the fun of it, and focusing on the strategy part.” Step back and analyze your learnings and decide how you want to move forward and grow.

Invest in Your Growth. Kelly joined a business accelerator for underrepresented creators in the middle of her journey that proved to be a smart strategic move. “I feel like that changed the whole course of where I am now, because once I was able to get support from them and talk to people directly after the program, that's when I got my biggest brand deal.”

Be Brave. “For me, it was recognizing that the fear was always going to be there,” says Kelly. “If you want to live a creative life, you're going to have to do something that's scary, and it's probably going to require steps that you don't want to take. For me, being on camera was very scary.” Growth happens outside of your comfort zone. Challenge yourself to take on moves that push your boundaries and help you develop new skills. Remember that being brave doesn't mean being fearless. It means acknowledging your fears but choosing to move forward despite them!

Amazon's adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s famed Red, White & Royal Blueblew our minds with its perfectly extravagant and messy royal romance. Prince Henry and Alex Claremont-Diaz stole our hearts with their antics, proving that love isn't always as cookie cutter as we think it should be. Not only that, but it was the LGBT film we never knew we needed until it hit the big screen last year.

If you've been missing Prince Henry and Alex, you're in luck because a sequel to Red, White & Royal Blue is officially coming! Here's everything we know about the latest developments!

Is the main cast returning?

Image via Jonathan Prime/Prime Video

I'm happy to share that Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez are returning! I honestly don't think the Red, White & Royal Blue sequel would be the same if they weren't.

However, no other cast information has been released! Hopefully we'll see Uma Thurman and Clifton Collins, Jr. reprise their roles!

What's the sequel going to be about?

Image via Prime Video

As of yet, Variety reports that not much has been confirmed about the sequel's plot or release date. My guess is that there the two lovebirds will have to juggle new responsibilities and mishaps.

What the original plot of "Red, White & Royal Blue?"

Image via Prime Video

The novel centers around the character of Alex Claremont-Diaz, a first son of the United States, and his romantic relationship with Prince Henry, British royalty.

Take a walk down memory lane with these behind-the-scenes pictures 👀

We cannot wait to see what new adventures are two lovebirds will cook up in Red, White & Royal Blue, but for now we’ll be rereading (and rereading) RWRB.
