These 3 New Books Will Make You Want a Revolution RN

Regardless of your political views, this tumultuous election, its results and the stress of gearing up for the next four years make one thing abundantly clear: This is a country at a crossroads, a country divided and a country that is desperately seeking some kind of change. What that change will be, however, will be up to us. You say you want a revolution? We’ve got some reading material for you in this week’s book club. Here are three manuals to help you fight prejudice, effect change and maybe even save the planet.

1. “They Can’t Kill Us All”: Ferguson, Baltimore, and a New Era in America’s Racial Justice Movement by Wesley Lowery ($17): On August 9, 2014, Michael Brown, an 18-year-old unarmed black man, was shot and killed by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri. The incident was like many of its kind that had happened before, and that would happen in the months to come. What made Brown’s death different was the reaction it caused; the figurative “straw that broke the camel’s back,” it sparked a massive protest and widespread civil unrest. Protesters converged on Ferguson for more than a week, chanting “hands up, don’t shoot,” with both peaceful and violent protests resulting in a curfew and widely criticized militarized response from the police. Brown’s death served as a catalyst for a national conversation about racism and police brutality that appears to have no end in sight, with the additional hundreds of black men and women who have been killed by police in the intervening two years.

Wesley Lowery was assigned to cover the Ferguson uprising for the Washington Post, and in “They Can’t Kill Us All” he tells the story of his assignment and how it changed the course of his career; he is now one of the leading reporters covering race and its intersection with the police’s use of fatal force on the unarmed. Lowery’s experiences growing up as a black man and dealing with white authorities help him put a personal touch on his reporting (though the first time he was ever arrested, ironically, was during his coverage of the Ferguson protests, an incident that itself became front page news). Looking at the issue from all sides, he acknowledges with some sympathy the dangerous reality that police officers face, and attempts to honestly portray the cases, cutting through the myths that circulate within the rhetoric. He’s not afraid to question the decisions made by the justice system or to look at the systemic issues that lead to this seemingly never-ending series of events that seem anything but isolated.

Lowery gives us a journalistic procedural that also serves as a very human story of exhaustion in the face of never-ending tragedy. His research takes him to Cleveland, Charleston and Baltimore for hundreds of interviews, and focuses on a variety of cases involving protest and social justice, such as the growing Black Lives Matter movement, not all that end in tragedy. “They demanded answers. They demanded justice,” he writes. It’s his examination of the battles fought and the occasional victories won that may help his work serve as a potential manual to seek more humanity, and a better country, for those who feel abandoned.

2. Rules for Revolutionaries: How Big Organizing Can Change Everything by Becky Bond and Zack Exley ($13): Alright, so maybe you have a good idea of the issues close to your heart; your blood is pumping with a righteous cause, and you know the status quo needs to change. Well, in the words of the political drama The West Wing, “What’s next?” What do you do to create the change you want to see in the world? Bernie Sanders campaign advisers Becky Bond and Zack Exley have created a 22-rule strategy that might help you organize for the next wave of the coming storm.

Bernie Sanders’ run for the presidency was unprecedented and dramatic; catapulted into national attention after being a relatively obscure name to the wider populace, his campaign propelled Bernie farther than most people initially would have ever expected. This stemmed from the campaign strategy promoted by Bond and Exley, which works on the principles espoused by another variously attributed line famously quoted by TheWest Wing, “Decisions are made by those who show up.” This book is a manual for how to organize and get things done, how to get and hold on to volunteers, how to encourage personal contact and individual conversations to try to get something done on a national level.

The authors pose solutions to problems of motivation, equality and practice, claiming that “who wants to get to work” is a better question than “who wants to be in charge,” and that you have to be willing to change procedure if it leads to change elsewhere. “Is it really possible,” they write, “to scale grassroots participation to a height that could actually let us go toe to toe with the billionaires and win?” Bond and Exley believe it might. Rules for Revolutionaries riffs off Saul Alinsky’s 1971 Rules for Radicals, a book that itself proposed a way to mobilize low-income communities for social change — appropriate, in a climate where getting anything done seems like a radical act.

3. The Unnatural World: The Race to Remake Civilization in Earth’s Newest Age by David Biello ($19): Change is important on a local and on a national scale, but it’s also becoming increasingly important on a global one. Scientific American’s David Biello takes a look at the damage we’re currently doing to the only Earth we’ve got, and poses theories on why we seem so reluctant to stem the deluge of harm we’re causing to it. He argues we have the means to change, the technology and the money, but do we have the will? Or will we wind up succumbing to the void, with Earth becoming a doomed vessel: attempting and failing to live “on a spaceship that can no longer support us”?

Biello cautions us against continuing this new era we are creating, fearing the embrace of an age of ignorance, where we make decisions and major changes to our world without adequate thought. He explains the concept of the current Anthropocene era, “the notion that humanity has become a world-changing force of nature.”

It’s not all doom and gloom. In encouraging a new way of seeing the world, Biello is convinced that we can embrace a longer-term viewpoint, and discover creative ways with our current resources to change a potentially terrifying fate. He takes us through fossil records to the future of the space race (as he puts it, “the view from space changes people”). This historically and geologically contextualizes our ability to engineer our world for good and to alter our current foundations, based on a wasteful lifestyle that allows some to profit wildly and others to suffer without access to basic necessities.

Revolution may begin at the grassroots level, but to stay alive, we’ll have to shake the earth.

If you're a classic romance girl who craves a little spice — I'm looking at you, Bridgerton fans — then Christina Lauren's The Paradise Problemis everything you need. I thought I was hooked on romantasy books, but I think this book has coaxed me right back over to the more traditional romance side — and I mean who can really have too much of either type of romance anyway, right?

But before I dig into all things The Paradise Problem, it's important to be clear up one thing: Christina Lauren isn't just one author like I initially thought. The two women responsible for bringing the world 30 romance novels are absolute powerhouses who also happen to be best friends: Christina Hobbs and Lauren Billings. I know — this news alone seems like it deserves it's own summer novel. Since they don't have plans to do that, we at least get to have their unified essence in the books they've written and in this lovely interview.

It goes without saying, but The Paradise Problem is the perfect way to celebrate Christina Lauren's successful romance empire. Of their newest title, Christina and Lauren feel great about it being in the world. "This one is really fun so it's like going out and just celebrating. We're not worried," Lauren says with a smile. Confidence; I love it!

Ahead, learn more about how they birthed Christina Lauren and created the characters you'll come to love in The Paradise Problem.

The Making of a Romance Novel Empire

Christina Hobbs and Lauren Billings

I know besties when I see them, and this writing duo has all the makings of two friends whose bond has been deepened by more than time. Still, curiosity get's the best of me when I mention what certainly feels like an empire to me before asking, "How did you two meet?" Their knowing smile says it all — they've clearly been locked in for a while, and they remember the exact moment things clicked for them.

"In 2009 we were both writing fanfiction and reading each other's stories online. Then Lo (Lauren) was putting on a panel at San Diego Comic Con on fanworks and she invited me to be on it. So, I came out and we met for the first time, and we got along really well," says Christina.

From there, they wrote a one shot — quick fanfiction story — together, and eventually decided it was worth taking a chance on writing an entire book. The fact that both Christina and Lauren have experience writing fanfiction not only helped them prepare for their pivot into authorship, but it also got them accustomed to the honesty of online book reviews.

As far as people not knowing that Christina Lauren is actually two people, that's basically the point. "We want it [our books] to feel like they're written by one voice. We spend a lot of time editing to make sure it doesn't sound feel like two very distinct, combative voices in there," Lauren says while excitedly adding, "I mean everyday we get DM's that are like, 'I didn't know there were two of you!'"

Peeling Back the Layers of The Paradise Problem

Warning: May contain some spoilers.

I have a deep appreciation for books that immediately call my imagination to the forefront and that's just one of the many things The Paradise Problem does as soon as you begin reading the first page. We're immediately introduced to Anna Green and "West" going their separate ways after choosing to amicably end their marriage. The kicker? See, they don't actually know each other.

How can two people essentially be strangers while they're married? Realistically, Anna and West's marriage was one of convenience. Each found themselves in a situation where their very survival relied on marriage, so they decided to become husband and wife solely on paper.

That seems pretty straightforward right? Wrong. Based on the first impressions of Anna and West, one has it together while the other is a hot mess. But, Christina Lauren is challenging us to rethink our approach to first impressions because they're not always everything. Once you start peeling back a person's layers, you can really start to understand their choices, reactions, family dynamics (and there are plenty of awkward encounters in this story on that front), and more.

Image via Jasmine Williams

Christina and Lauren knew what they wanted for these two characters in the end, but they had to figure out how to fully thread the needle for it to work — particularly when it came to West and his relationship to his family. They had his backstory, but they needed to figure out how to fully flesh out his world, parents and all. What they went with was jaw-dropping IMO, full of shady behavior, cocky attitudes, and beyond. But how does West's background and personality relate to Anna's?

"We always try to think about who's the perfect person for the characters — not who will complete them. Anna is very different. She does not come from a wealthy background, she's not super polished," says Lauren. But, there's more to her than meets the eye. She's a genuinely good person who has a loving heart that no amount of status can compete with once the layers are peeled back.

This is what begins winning West over, and the two soon begin to find there's some truth to the fictionalized relationship they have on display for West's family. Ultimately, The Paradise Problem begs readers to ask if opposites really do attract, confronting us — and our main characters — with this one scenario at a time.

In my humble opinion, The Paradise Problem feels like one of Christina Lauren's best books because it encompasses all the elements that fans of their work love. Christina says, "They love characters they either want to be or want to be friends with, heroes they want for their own, a lot of the settings..." She continues, saying, "The great thing about having a large catalogue of books is that there's something for everyone. Do you like funny books? We got you. Do you want super saucy books? We got you. Do you want something that's gonna rip your heart out? We got that too."

In case you have any doubts about that, check out all of the duo's books now and get your copy of The Paradise Problemtoday!

I simply do not do scary movies. That being said, the A Quiet Place movies are one franchise I will always make an exception for. They focus on family and relationships in a such a beautiful way that I could truly shout about from the rooftops. John Krasinski saying he made the OG film as a love letter to his family? His character signing "I have always loved you" to his daughter at the end? Well, now I want to rewatch the movies — and there's no better time because A Quiet Place: Day One is coming this summer!

What is A Quiet Place: Day One about?

A Quiet Place: Day One | Official Trailer 2 (2024 Movie) - Lupita Nyong'o, Joseph Quinn

Just like the beginning of A Quiet Place II, this prequel starts on the day the Death Angels came to earth. But instead of a small town, Lupita Nyong'o and Joseph Quinn's characters are stuck in the scariest place on earth: New York City. Now they have to work together to figure out how to get out of midtown (with Lupita's cat in tow). As someone who lives in the city, the idea of having to be silent in such a loud, rowdy environment sends shivers down my spine.

When does the A Quiet Place prequel come out?

Although we're only four months into the new year, Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco's relationship is still going strong! The Only Murders in the Building star has been seen smiling in every pic she posts which indicates she's genuinely happy in her relationship. A source hinted to People that the two are doing well. April 25, 2024

In an interview with WSJ, Benny Blanco gave his POV of how his relationship with Selena Gomez began and it was the cutest revelation. "It’s crazy how your partner could just be sitting there the whole time, right in front of your eyes...And then you have a Clueless moment where you're like, Wait, I'm in love," he says.

A man who compares his relationship to that moment in Clueless where Cher and Josh admit their feelings for each other gets brownie points from us!

May 15, 2024

It looks like Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco's relationship may be ready for the next step — that's if you ask Mr. Blanco. He appeared on The Howard Stern Show yesterday to chat about everything, including his relationship with Selena. When Howard Stern asked, "You want to have kids with Selena? Have you told her you want to have kids yet," Benny replied, "That’s my next goal, to check the box. I have a ton of godkids. I've got a ton of nephews. I love being around kids."

However, he's not in a rush and wants everything to happen naturally. All that matters is that the two of them are in each other's life. He said, "I just know that when I look at her, I just say, ‘I don’t know a world where it could be better than this.’ That’s what I always say to her.”

The Real Housewives of New Yorkseason 14 and Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip: RHONY Legacywere seasons for the books. We got a peak into the lives of New York's rich and famous, both past and present, and to nobody's surprise...we want more! This long-standing, well-loved franchise saw a lot in its heyday — I mean, just look at what happened when they put the OGs together for one trip — and it continues to thrill audiences with new fabulous faces. But what can we expect from a new season of RHONY? With rumors swirling about who's set to return, here's everything we know about The Real Housewives of New York season 15.

Is "The Real Housewives of New York" coming back for season 15?

Image via Bravo

For a while, there was no official word from Bravo about whether or not we were getting more RHONY...but we're stayed hopeful! Well, all that waiting paid off because Bravo posted on Instagram that season 15 is a-go! Andy Cohen recently told Us Weeklythat the "next season" should fix some of the bumps this reboot faced, so we're excited to see what that means for the upcoming RHONY season!

Who's in the cast for "The Real Housewives of New York" season 15?

Image via Bravo

It was pretty unclear who was returning to The Real Housewives of New York. Most notably outspoken about her return (or potential lack thereof) was Jenna Lyons. She told Jimmy Fallon that she wasn't sure if she'll return for another season, which would have been a total bummer TBH! Jenna's sublime style and unique personality added so much to the show's dynamic last year, and it would definitely be missed.

LUCKILY, the entire season 14 is set to return for RHONY season 15 — Jenna included! Watch the adorable announcement here.

Reports are in that THE Rebecca Minkoff is joining the cast, too. While it's unclear if she's a friend of the show or a main cast member, I can't wait to watch this amazing female founder take the show by the horns! Meanwhile, other folks have different feelings about the new housewife.

According to Page Six, Sai De Silva isn't too interested in Minkoff's presence on the show. In what she must have thought was a private conversation, De Silva shared that she finds Minkoff to be "boring" and that she's "unresponsive" to the cast's attempts to "take her down." Whoops!

The show hasn't even started, and I already can't wait to watch this all unfold...

Is Luann de Lesseps coming back to "The Real Housewives of New York"?

Image via Bravo

Matt Rogers recently asked Countess Luann outright about the possibility of a return to the RHONY world. According to Matt, he heard that the upcoming season would have Brynn Whitfield, Erin Lichy, Jessel Taank, Sonja Morgan, Luann de Lesseps, and Dorinda Medley with Ubah Hassan returning as a friend of the cast. Luann neither confirmed nor denied this IRL, but cryptically commented on Instagram this February about the rumors.

However, as of right now, Countess Luann de Lesseps isn't an announced cast season 15 cast member.

Image via Instagram

What do the other cast members think about these rumors? According to Us Weekly, Brynn Whitfield is "open to anything" when it comes to filming with current and former cast members. Meanwhile, Erin Lichy told Access Hollywoodthat they're "not joining forces with (RHONY) Legacy."

Who got fired from "RHONY"?

Image via Bravo

After filming RHONY Legacy, investigative reporting by Vanity Fairfound that Ramona Singer allegedly used a racial slur towards a Black crew member — among other racially-driven misconduct allegations from years past and present. Ramona vehemently denied the use of the slur, but was still asked not to attend BravoCon in 2023. It's very likely that her time at Bravo is now up. According to PEOPLE, Ramona also isn't employed by real estate company Douglas Elliman anymore.

Who is the richest on "The Real Housewives of New York"?

Image via Bravo

According to Cosmopolitan, Jenna Lyons is worth approximately $5 million dollars — the most net-worth of the current cast for The Real Housewives of New York. However, this could change if she decides not to return to the show! The next in line would be Brynn Whitfield, coming in at a worth of $3 million dollars.

When will "The Real Housewives of New York" season 15 air?

Image via Bravo

Allegedly filming for The Real Housewives of New York season 15 hasn't even started yet. As of February 7, Erin Lichy wasn't even sure when filming would start, according to Access Hollywood. So everything seems very TBD at the moment.

Is there a trailer for "The Real Housewives of New York" season 15?

Image via Bravo

Since filming is still up in the air, we definitely don't have a trailer yet. We're definitely keeping our eyes peeled for the moment something drops, though!

In Mother of the Bride (which you can watch on Netflix now!), Brooke Shields' Lana is surprised to learn her daughter Emma (Miranda Cosgrove) is getting married in Thailand — but she's even more surprised when she finds out Emma's future father-in-law (Benjamin Bratt) is the man who broke her heart in college. Naturally, I had to ask the cast for their best advice on running into an ex!

"I think being a decent and kind person is the first thing that you should try to do," Sean Teale, who plays Emma's fiancé RJ, says. "Keep it light if it's a stressful situation because that's the best way through anything is just being kind and decent, and then you can go away feeling okay about it."

"Yeah, I would say remain calm, try not to ramble because I've run into an ex before at the movies and yeah, I rambled," Miranda adds.

Miranda Cosgrove & Sean Teale Hung Out With Elephants During “Mother of the Bride”

Not only does Lana have to navigate her relationship drama, but she also has to deal with the fact Emma's wedding is totally taken over by social media, a concept that was really appealing to Brooke Shields from the beginning.

"It has to unfold, not necessarily in the way that it would have organically unfolded with a mother and her only daughter going to pick out the dress and going to plan the napkins and all those things that you sort of dream about doing for your daughter," Brooke says. "So that was a really interesting thing, for that to be usurped and sort of [replaced with] somebody else's ideas."

"The script I read, [Emma's] vocation was creating this amazing website that all the sponsors were excited about," Benjamin Bratt says. "But over the course of shooting it, I think the filmmakers recognized that it's not about websites anymore, it's actually about TikTok and social media."

Ironically, the cast didn't find themselves online too much during filming! "I used my phone a lot less than I would have," Sean Teale says. "Especially during the shoot, we spent our whole time messing around if we weren't working."

"Especially with the time change too," Miranda Cosgrove adds. "It took a while to get used to that. So it kind of just makes you feel like you're off the grid. Being in Thailand was like a little getaway."

The fact that Emma is basically a social media star means I HAD to ask Miranda about iCarly, and whether Emma and Carly would get along. "I definitely think that they would be super close," she agrees. "But I think that Emma would probably wanna, like, manage Carly or something. Like she'd wanna manage her social media and come up with ideas and stuff for her channel."

Brooke Shields Spills On Working With Chad Michael Murray For Mother of the Bride

Miranda Cosgrove (and Brooke Shields for that matter) isn't the only member of the cast who's experienced the limelight from a young age. The cast also includes Chad Michael Murray, and as a One Tree Hill and A Cinderella Story STAN, I had to ask what it was like working with the Gilmore Girls actor. "You know what, I'm like 'Those abs have got to be painted on,'" Brooke jokes. "No, you know what was amazing was seeing him with his family and his stunning wife...It's picture perfect."

"[The story is about] that bond between parents and children, and many of us, including Chad, are kind of on board with it from our own personal experiences," Benjamin Bratt says. "A rom-com doesn't really succeed unless it has that very delicate, hard-to-achieve balance of outrageous humor that's gonna make you laugh out loud and real humanity."

"Brooke is...one of the most generous kind, empathetic, inclusive, enthusiastic actors I've ever worked with," he continues. "She loves what she's doing, she's always checking in with everyone, not just with other actors, but with the craft service person, 'Are you okay?' She's so maternal in that way. And it's really not an exaggeration, but it creates an environment where you really feel supported."

"For me, it's like, ok, it's pretty great to have Chad and Benjamin vying for your attention," Brooke adds. "To be this age of an actress and sort of be like, 'Oh my God, not one but two of them get to fight for me?' Like, that's sweet and funny."

"I have worked with men in the past and they're threatened by a female lead or there's a delicate nature to it," she continues more seriously. "It's tricky. And you see these two beautiful men who take their job really seriously bring brilliant nuance to the dramatic scenes, the funny scenes, all of that, who are okay also being a bit more of an object of desire as well. I mean, the slow motion of [Chad] putting spray on his body and [Benjamin] coming out of the shower, it's something that you don't see a lot, you usually see it in the reverse."

"Feel free to objectify any time," Benjamin jokes. "If Brooke is gonna [do it] I have zero issue with that."
