Be A Better Tourist With These Top Travel Tips

top travel tips for 2023 girl with suitcases woman traveler

With 81% of travelers pledging to take a trip in 2023 no matter what (according to new data from Expedia), we're sure to see a spike in global travel this summer. If you've already planned your dream vacation, then you know firsthand just how exciting it is to travel to new cities and soak up different cultures. From trying new foods and meeting locals to snapping photos of iconic landmarks, there's nothing quite like the rush of discovery that comes with getting lost in new places.

But as travelers, we also have a responsibility to be respectful of the locals and the cultures we're visiting. With these top travel tips, you can get the most out of your travels while also being a responsible and mindful tourist. So go ahead and take those Instagram-worthy snapshots, but do it with care for the locals and the environment around you.

Here are the top travel tips to make the most of your next adventure:

1. Respect cultural differences:

Every country has its own unique customs and traditions, so take the time to research and understand them before you go. Be mindful of local cultures, and avoid making assumptions or imposing your own beliefs onto others. While this is a good general rule of thumb just about anywhere, it's especially important when visiting around the world.

2. Dress appropriately:

It's important to dress appropriately for the local culture and customs. For example, in some countries, it may be considered disrespectful to wear revealing clothing or to show too much skin. Do some research beforehand and pack accordingly.

3. Learn a few key phrases:

Even if you're not fluent in the local language, learning a few key phrases like "hello," "thank you," and "please" can go a long way in showing respect for the local culture and building connections with locals.

4. Be mindful of your surroundings:

It's important to be aware of your surroundings when traveling in unfamiliar places. Avoid being too loud, rowdy, or disruptive in public spaces. Whether you're bar hopping, or wandering through more residential spaces, you want to be respectful of your noise levels. Take cues from locals and follow their lead when it comes to appropriate behavior.

5. Avoid over-touristing:

While it's tempting to visit all the major tourist attractions, consider taking a more authentic approach to travel. Seek out local experiences and off-the-beaten-path destinations to get a more genuine sense of the local culture. You'll often find that these areas are less crowded and more authentic, giving you a better glimpse into the local way of life.

6. Support local businesses:

Instead of opting for big chain restaurants or souvenir shops, try to support local businesses and artisans. Not only will you have a more authentic experience, but you'll also be helping to support the local economy.

7. Tip appropriately:

Tipping customs can vary widely from country to country. In some countries, tipping may not be expected at all, while in others it may be considered an insult not to. If you do your research and tip appropriately for the local culture, you can avoid any awkwardness at the end of what was likely an awesome meal.

8. Be respectful of nature and wildlife:

When visiting natural landmarks or wildlife areas, be mindful of the impact you're having on the environment. Avoid littering, stay on designated trails, and avoid disturbing wildlife. Outside of the great outdoors, some countries embrace feral, undomesticated animals as a part of their town's ecosystem. Whether you're facing cats in Greece or chickens in the Caribbean, be mindful that your interactions match the intentions of the community.

9. Be open-minded and curious:

Finally, one of the best ways to score points with locals is to simply be open-minded and curious. Ask questions, try new things, and be willing to step outside of your comfort zone. By showing a genuine interest in the local culture, you'll not only gain a deeper appreciation for your travels, but you'll also be more likely to make meaningful connections with the locals.

By following these tips, you won't have to worry about sticking out as an annoying tourist in your destination city. And who knows, some might even mistake you for a local — bon voyage!

Summer travels are quickly approaching and we couldn’t be more excited; our calendars are filled with wellness retreats, getaways with our BFFs, and romantic long weekends that we’ve been waiting for — potentially since what feels like last summer. For many of us, the bucket-list-worthy trips that we have planned this summer are at least a plane ride away, and while it can feel exciting to pick out the perfect airport outfit and snap an aesthetic bird's eye view pic while in the air, traveling via plane can be anxiety-inducing and stressful.

Taking a trip that requires a plane ticket — as opposed to a road trip — forces travelers to give up a lot of control; you might be confined to only packing in a carry-on, and you don’t get to decide the exact time that you start your travel day, and you might encounter cancellations or delays that are entirely out of your control. United Airlines has predicted that summer’s kickoff holiday, Memorial Day weekend, is going to be their busiest MDW to date with more than 3 million passengers expected to fly between May 23rd through May 24th, 2024. During MDW United will fly more than 4,400 times a day; that’s more than 73 take-offs every minute!

With that many flights in the air, there are bound to be a few hiccups and inevitable flight delays that we want you to feel prepared for, instead of panicked about, this summer. To get the inside scoop on what you should do if your flight gets delayed, we spoke with various travel experts who shared the best tips and tricks for navigating flight delays in a way that benefits travelers below.

How to Prepare for Flight Delays Before Take-off

Flight delays are usually unplanned, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t plan ahead for them. Although obstructions to an exciting trip that awaits aren’t something you want to think about, there are a few simple steps that can make dealing with a delay much simpler should your departure time be pushed back.

With over 21+ years with United and over 15 countries visited under his belt, Chicago-based Mike Kempner, Director of Irregular Operations for the airline is well-versed in irregular travel adjustments. Mike’s top tip for travelers who might experience flight delays can be done before they even get to the airport; download the app of the airline you’re traveling with. Kempner shared that United’s app was recently revamped to provide travelers with a “seamless day-of travel experience.” United’s app, for example, has a “self-service feature that automatically presents travelers with personalized re-booking options, bag tracking information, and meal and hotel vouchers when eligible if their flight is delayed or canceled.”

Having the mobile app of the airline you’re flying with can be extremely helpful for staying in the loop about your flight status and avoiding anxiety about the unknown. Kempner explained this further by sharing that “when a flight is delayed by more than 60 minutes or canceled, [United] customers will be notified through text message and the app and prompted to check flight and re-booking status, book other preferred flight options, view and receive eligible hotel, meal and/or rideshare vouchers, and track bags.” By having these resources at your fingertips in real-time following a flight delay, you’ll feel prepared for the actions that you need to take next to keep your trip on track.

What to do When Your Flight Has Inevitably Been Delayed

Even if you’ve taken all of the smart steps prior to the day of your flight to minimize stress, there are a few tricks that you should have up your sleeve that larger travel corporations might not be willing to share. To get the skinny on delay loopholes and best practices, we leaned on ATX-based Melanie Demi, the content creator behind HerBoozyTails on Instagram. Melanie has been creating travel content that inspires others to explore the world before retirement for several years and has been to 30 countries in the process. While her passport is full of stamps and her Instagram captures her trips beautifully, she’s also fallen victim to many flight delays during her adventures.

“The first thing I do when my flight is start a note in my phone with the OG flight time and updated (delayed) flight time to have for reference” explained Demi. “It’s important to have documentation of your delays in case you need to submit anything to the airline, either for reimbursement or to get additional aid to get you through your delay, such as meal vouchers or even a hotel for the night should your delay cause you to miss connections or move your flight to another day.” The notes don’t stop there; Demi shared that travelers should “Make sure to note whatever the cause [of delay is] is,” whether it be weather, mechanical, etc., because oftentimes the “compensation” you’re entitled to depends on the cause of the delay.”

It’s normal not to know everything about the airline you’re flying with, but knowing extra details definitely helps during a delay. HerBoozyTails elaborated on this with the following scenario: “Let’s say your flight with Delta is delayed, and you need to get onto another flight to make it to your final destination ASAP, but [the representative] tells you there are no more Delta flights that day, so you’ll have to wait until tomorrow.” This is where doing your due diligence comes in; Demi went on to explain that hypothetically, “there is a Virgin Airlines flight that night… Delta should also be able to book you on that flight because Virgin and Delta are partners.” Long story short, it’s important to “look up to see what partner airlines the airline you’re flying with has, and you can find more flight options there!”

Overall, submitting refund requests as soon as possible after a delayed flight inclusive of all of the information from your flight and its delay is the best starting place for handling a flight delay with ease, but we hope that the extra secrets shared by our experts come in handy during future trips.

Out of all of this May's movies (and all the 2024 movies, TBH) there was one I was most excited for: The Fall Guy starring Emily Blunt and Ryan Gosling! I haven't seen a big, silly action movie in so long and they always prove to be the perfect summer movies because they match the energy we all have when we're this close to sunny bathing suit weather.

The Fall Guy 2024 is absolutely a film made by movie lovers, for movie lovers. It's also director David Leitch's "love letter" to the stunt community, and gives them the celebration they deserve! Because while the Emmys have a stunt category, the Oscars don't, a point that Emily and Ryan actually brought up while presenting at the 2024 Oscars. "The Academy's history runs deep with the fearless work of the incredible artisans of the stunt community," Ryan said in a voiceover during the show. "Stunt performers and the action they design continue to create some of the most memorable moments in the history of cinema."

While The Fall Guy cast got me into the theater, the movie had plenty of unexpected twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time! Here's everything you need to know about the movie before you stream it this week.

Is The Fall Guy on any streaming service?

Image via Universal Pictures

Yes, you can rent The Fall Guy movie on Amazon Prime or Apple TV and stream it at home now! The Fall Guy TV show from the 1980s is also available to rent on Apple TV and Amazon Prime.

How to watch Fall Guy movie 2024?

Image via Universal Pictures

The Fall Guy is available to rent on Amazon Prime and Apple TV+ today, May 21. It hit theaters May 3, 2024, and if it's in a theater near you, I totally recommend seeing it on the big screen before it's too late. This is a great movie to see with all your friends, or for date night (either with your partner or on a solo date).

What's The Fall Guy 2024 film about?

Image via Universal Pictures

The Fall Guy follows Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling), who disappears from Hollywood after a stunt gone wrong. When the lead of his ex's (Emily Blunt) movie goes missing and derails the film, Colt jumps back into action to find him and save the movie. And hopefully, get the love of his life back while he's at it.

While it definitely has plenty of explosions, fights, and stunts, The Fall Guy 2024 is just as much a rom-com as it is an action movie! Emily and Ryan have such great chemistry, and their characters are goofy, hilarious, and lovable. There's the classic miscommunication we see in all our favorite rom-coms, and the two of them continually watch out for each other in a really sweet way. They complement each other so well and I NEED to see them in another movie ASAP!

Who's in The Fall Guy cast?

Image via Universal Pictures

The Fall Guy cast is crazy good — alongside Emily Blunt and Ryan Gosling, we see Stephanie Hsu, Hannah Waddingham, Winston Duke, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

What is The Fall Guy 2024 film based on?

Image via Universal Pictures

While a lot of movies are based on books, The Fall Guy 2024 is actually based on a TV show. The series, which debuted in 1981, follows a stunt man named Colt who's also working as a bounty hunter. The show takes an opposite approach to the story (with Colt working as a bounty hunter instead of basically fighting them like Ryan does) and now I absolutely have to watch it.

Where can I watch all 5 seasons of The Fall Guy TV series?

Image via Universal Pictures

You can rent episodes from The Fall Guy on Apple TV and Prime Video. The TV show stars Lee Majors as Colt and Heather Thomas as Emily Blunt's character Jody.
