I Was Unhinged In Trader Joe’s Last Week – Let's Review My Snack Haul

trader joe's new items taste testing reviewing snacks

Trader Joe's just has that certain je ne sais quoi to it. Maybe it's the overly friendly workers, or the cute packaging (gets me every time), or both. I think above anything, the main thing that draws me to TJ's is their innovative snacks. Trader Joe's releases new items all the time, and this season, I've noticed a ton of fun things coming from the beloved grocery chain. If you're poking around the idea of buying some scrumptious treats to snack on, I'm here to tell you if they're worth it or not. I conducted a weeklong taste test of the latest and greatest food picks – here are the results and rankings!

Trader Joe's Meatless Ground: 10/10

Image via Trader Joe's

The first stop on my Trader Joe’s taste testing adventure lies in the realm of plant-based proteins. The Meatless Ground is plant-based crumbles made from pea protein. I don't really know how that works (how does one extract the protein from the pea?) but nevertheless, my general curiosity for meatless meat drew me toward this product.

As the Gym Rats™ would say, the macros on this are killer. With every 90 calorie serving, you get 15 grams of protein, which directly appeals to people like me who are trying to prioritize their daily protein intake. This plant-based pack looked ridiculously easy to cook, which was another deciding factor in purchasing it (BTW, only $4).

The intended instructions required that you microwave water before adding the crumbles to soak for 10 minutes, but because I’m a total #rulebreaker and #rebel, I boiled the water instead. I’m nothing if not a loyal stan of my electric kettle! This method seemed to work just fine, since all the crumbles need is a good soak in hot water.

Though the package listed some spices in the ingredients, I was initially skeptical about these crumbles having absolutely no flavor. My first bite proved me wrong. I can’t exactly pinpoint the exact taste, but I know that these crumbles gave me a very meaty vibe just from the taste. Notes of smokiness take precedent here, which attributes to that vibe without overwhelming it. The texture was just as good. It literally felt like I was eating chicken when I was actually chewing on pea protein – wild. That's that.

I imagine Mr. Joe himself pictured these meatless crumbles being used across all sorts of dishes, hence the more relaxed flavor. I ended up adding the cooked crumbles (which stayed fresh in the fridge for over a week) to homemade pasta and this Thai peanut noodle salad for a nice boost of protein. 10 out of 10 for this new item!

Trader Joe's Limone Alfredo Sauce: 8/10

I’d do anything for Trader Joe’s Cacio e Pepe pasta sauce, so when I was pointed toward this citrusy take, it was an immediate yes.

The Limone Alfredo sauce is described as “a bright and creamy pasta sauce made with Parmigiano Reggiano Cheese” on its label. It suggests chicken or shrimp as the sauce’s ideal pairing, but my plan was to add it to some homemade spinach fettuccine. I typically go for a zesty take on pasta anyway, so there was no way this jar could be bad.

When it was time to sauce things up, I swear I’d never seen a sauce so thicc. I’d even dare to bump it to three c’s: thiccc. It originally gave the impression of mayo, which I was not turned on to, in any way. Now was not the time to give up, though. I’d bought the sauce, and I was going to like it.

My first bite was bright – like touching an actual lemon to my tongue. It wasn’t tortuous, though…more like a delightful, punchy little kick to the palette! That’s one thing I love about TJ’s pasta sauces I’ve tried: they’re always fully seasoned, so you don’t have to add anything to them. It makes the process tremendously easy.

My Limone Alfredo-infused fettuccine was an absolute dream. It was bursting with flavor and delivered on a truly creamy bite, just like the label said it would. The lemon was just a tad too powerful for me, which is why I landed at an 8 out of 10 for this new Trader Joe’s item.

Trader Joe's 100% Mango Juice from Carabao Mangoes: 8/10

I’m usually riddled with anxiety when I’m shopping at Trader Joe’s. It’s nothing against Mr. Joe, but the store layout has no fluidity to it. I’m always bumping into other shoppers and getting confused because the peanut butter cups aren’t where they were last week. I digress…

My anxiety-filled journey inside my local Trader Joe’s led me to the drinks aisle. In addition to being the Snack Queen, I actually serve on the board of the Yummy Drinks Committee, so buying this mango juice was basically my duty. I wasn’t sure if this was really a new item, but it was new to me.

This individually sold, not from concentrate mango juice is made from Carabao mangoes, straight from the Philippines. I really had no other expectations for the drink except for it to be tasty, so I sipped with an open mind.

My introduction to this juice was extremely sweet. I love a good sweet treat, but it felt a little overdone in this case. When I think “fresh mango juice” (and not from concentrate, like the product description noted), I think light and juicy – and while this was not exactly that, I could definitely see myself diluting the juice with water, or using it as a mixer for an easy cocktail. Because of its potential versatility, I give this juice an 8 out of 10.

Trader Joe's Coffee & Dark Chocolate Joe-Joe's: 10/10

There’s never been a thicker cookie. I mean, the Most Stuf Oreos certainly have a stake in the thick cookie game, but after trying the Coffee & Dark Chocolate Joe-Joe’s, I see the dessert world differently.

These chocolate sandwich cookies with coffee creme are sold in quantities of 8, which I later found made it superbly dangerous to not eat the whole package. If you left me unsupervised with these cookies, hijinks will ensue.

My first bite proved the sheer deliciousness of these dipped cookies – it had tons of sweetness, but wasn't overdoing it. The coffee flavors in the sandwich filling and outer layer drizzles provided a rich balance with all the dark chocolate action. The texture was super crunchy, yet light, and when the crunch combined with the velvety dipped crust, I saw heaven open up over me. Not really, but you’ll understand the feeling when you get your hands on the cookies. Immediate 10/10 for me.

Trader Joe's Ratatouille Bites: 7/10

I have to hand it to the 18th-century French farmers that discovered this harmonious blend of summer vegetables. Without them, we wouldn’t have these Ratatouille Bites at our disposal. The Trader Joe’s Ratatouille Bites are like if the ingredients for ratatouille were condensed into a fried and breaded meatball. While this avant-garde attempt may offend authentic French cuisine, I thought they’d be fun to try, just because of the novelty.

When I opened the box, I was surprised and a tad disappointed because I thought the bites would be bigger, based on the images on the package. This doesn’t count against their taste-test rating, but I was definitely expecting more.

The bites were exceptionally easy to make. All I had to do was throw them in my air fryer and cook for 10 minutes – not too much to ask of me for a little something to eat!

This Trader Joe’s snack was giving explosive flavor from the get-go. Heavy on the spice, there was always an equal balance with the breadcrumb coating. I wish I cooked them for just a few minutes longer, though, just to see if the outer layer could get even crispier.

I see the Ratatouille Bites being an essential party (or post-party!) snack because they’re bite-sized, easy to eat, and flat-out addicting.

Trader Joe's Peanut Butter Cocoa Marshmallows: 6/10

I thought this snack was going to blow my mind, but sadly it didn't.

My impression was that the Trader Joe’s Peanut Butter Cocoa Marshmallows were more chocolatey than peanut-buttery, but I was sorely mistaken. The bag they came in gave the impression of a chocolate-focused flavor, but upon opening it, I realized the snack was rather a chocolate marshmallow dipped in a peanut butter coating.'

Skeptically biting into a marshmallow, I tasted… nothing. The flavors took a while to set in, but when they did, they were artificial and overwhelming. Considering the peanut butter coating looked like matte plastic, I shouldn’t have expected anything more. The texture was mainly gummy from the marshmallow, I suspect. The PB coating did melt, but it wasn’t aiding any of the unpleasantness when I was snacking. I was immensely let down by the flavors and texture. The only redeeming quality of this TJ’s snack is the fact that they look like small Reese’s eggs. Tasting like Reese’s on the other hand? Absolutely not.

Trader Joe's Olive Pesto: 10/10

I could legitimately eat olives right out of the jar – and (to really expose my true goblin self) sometimes I do. I’m also a pesto addict, so when I saw the Olive Pesto at TJ’s, I snatched it right from the shelf. I thought the two were an amazing pair, and I instantly thought of all the different ways I could use the pesto.

This pesto houses the ultimate olive balance. It brightens up your traditional pesto with those briny, salty notes, plus it pairs well with a range of different foods – from avocado toast to pasta, I truly tasted and tested this new item a lot throughout the week. It’s a true winner IMO!

This spread carries a chunkier texture, but it’s not out of hand. The pesto is still easily spreadable and stirrable, not to mention bursting with flavor.

Trader Joe's Strawberries and Cream Gelato: 9/10

If a snack is sweet and sugary, it’s almost guaranteed that I’ll like it (sorry Peanut Butter Cocoa Marshmallows!). When I saw this new Trader Joe’s item during an IG scroll, I knew I had to have it.

Sweet strawberries and vanilla gelato partner up in this dessert to form a power duo I never knew I needed. The dual-flavor is split half and half inside the pint-sized carton, so you can easily munch on one or the other…or go crazy and try both at once! The carton is sprinkled with candied strawberries that add some crunch to each bite.

I tried each half on its own before combining the flavors into one spoonful. And wow! The vanilla gelato had a surprisingly cream-cheesy impression, which complimented the overly sweet strawberry gelato to the T.

Above anything else, I was massively blown away by the textures of the snack. Though the pint was frozen for a few days, it maintained such creaminess – I knew gelato was thicker than most ice creams, but this bite was truly otherworldly. Mr. Joe’s site describes the Strawberries & Cream Gelato as “an ice cream that’s wondrously light, yet velvety and dense” – a very accurate sell.

TheDunkin' summer menujust hit stores on May 1, and I was so excited to get my hands on the new lineup! In addition to an all-new Refresher flavor, Dunkin’ launched two unique coffee-based drinks and three fun food items (both sweet and savory) to coordinate with the summer season. Of course, I had to see what all the hype was about via a bonafide taste test.

Here are my honest thoughts about the new items on the Dunkin’ summer menu, so you know what’s worth trying! Let's get into it!

Watch Me Review The New Drinks

Watch Me Review The New Food Items

Iced Vanilla Frosted Donut Signature Latte

First up, the Vanilla Frosted Donut Signature Latte. This one is so sweet. But so addicting! It may not be the prime choice for those who don’t like sweet drinks, though. I *do* like my coffees fairly sweet, so I didn’t think it was overwhelming when I tried it.

More than anything, this latte simply delivered joy once I got it in my hands. It’s topped with a good amount of whipped cream and a healthy dose of rainbow sprinkles, which fix just about any bad day as far as I’m concerned.

Blueberry Donut Coffee

I go wild for blueberry cake donuts, and I expected the new Blueberry Donut Coffee to taste just like one. I was a bit disappointed when it didn't! I got more of a donut flavor rather than a blueberry one when I sipped down the iced version of this bev.

All things considered, I still loved my first impression of the new Blueberry Donut Coffee. I got it iced (duh), and with cream, it came out to the perfect, most beautiful coffee color. It had maybe 75% of the Vanilla Frosted Donut Signature Latte’s sweetness, which meant it was still sweet enough for my liking.

This could be a great go-to order when you don’t quite want espresso, but are still looking for a nice caffeinated sipper.

Kiwi Watermelon Refresher

The first thing I wrote down in my tasting notes about the brand-new Kiwi Watermelon Refresher was: “MMMMMM SO GOOD.” And I stand by that!

Upon first sip, I got a refreshing (ha, get it?) swig of kiwi flavor and watermelon flavor, which was very nice and evenly balanced. I could see myself gulping this one down at the park or on a road trip this summer! It honestly tasted like candy, which I am not mad about a single bit.

That being said, most of the Dunkin’ Refreshers are really sweet, so if you like milder drinks, you may not fully like this newcomer.

I also got to try the Kiwi Watermelon Refresher with lemonade – a new thing for Dunkin’. I really loved it! With the lemonade, I still got the full effect from the kiwi and watermelon. It was never overpowered, unlike other fruity lemonade beverages from similar coffee chains.

Watermelon Burst Donut

I was really hesitant to try this new menu item because I normally don’t associate watermelon with donuts. One thing about the new Watermelon Burst Donut is that she’s messy… This sweet treat is coated in tons of pink, watermelon-flavored sprinkles and filled to the brim with watermelon jelly.

The first bite I took was just of the donut dough itself – and it wasn’t half bad! My only complaint at that point was the fact that the pink sprinkles got all over the place. They made my lips and mouth messy, and fell off into my lap and around my car. Yikes!

The second bite, of course, included some of the watermelon jelly. This is when I decided that the Watermelon Burst Donut just isn't for me. The bready part was good, but the jelly was super sour – just not what I'd prefer from a donut as a chocolate girlie. I wouldn’t order it on my own accord.

Chocolate Chunk Cookie

Chocolate chunk cookies are classic – you can’t deny that! You also can’t mess it up, IMO. Dunkin’ hit the nail right on the head with this new packaged snack. First of all, I adore the size of the Chocolate Chunk Cookie. It’s huge and packed with big chocolate chunks – as it should be!

There’s a nice variety with texture in this cookie, too. I found that the chocolate chunks were creamy and sweet, while the rest of the cookie was crunchy and downright cookie-like. It made eating it fun!

The pre-packaged-ness of it all is also super nice for snacking on-the-go, or even saving for later (midnight snack, anyone?).

Green Goddess Wrap

Seemingly a direct competitor for Starbucks’ popular Spinach Feta Wrap, the new Green Goddess Wrap from Dunkin’ thoroughly impressed me. Unlike its counterpart, the Green Goddess Wrap is delivered with a very nice texture. I find that other options typically get soggy (after being warmed and put in a bag) and fall apart, but this one didn’t get that way at all.

I loved that the outside of the wrap got a little bit crispy, while the inside stayed gooey and warm. While the texture is quite enjoyable, I was left wishing for more flavor from the wrap’s contents.

Even if it was lacking a bit in flavor, you could easily doctor it up with spices, salt, or hot sauce. More than anything, I appreciate that the Green Goddess Wrap provides a substantial option for breakfast, brunch, or lunch via drive-thru.

The Starbucks summer menu just dropped, and it’s packed with some pretty divisive drinks. The menu lineup introduced a new flavor of Refreshers alongside something Starbucks has never done on a large scale before: boba. The most recent release also brought two new sweet treats to the pastry case – the Orange Cream Cake Pop and Pineapple Cloud Cake.

Given that these new sips and snacks really venture into uncharted territory, I had to give them a proper try to see if they’re worth it! If you’re on the fence about trying some items from this year’s Starbucks summer menu, scroll on for a totally honest review.

Summer-Berry Refresher

I got my hopes up for the new Refreshers with fruity boba. In hindsight, the long-awaited hype was not worth it. By itself, the Summer-Berry Refresher tastes just like blue Gatorade. Sorry not sorry.

The boba was expected to be the saving grace of this drink, but I was left wanting more after sipping down my first few pearls. The raspberry-flavored popping boba pieces supply a fun texture, but they’re not super flavorful. You also don’t get a great serving size based on the ratio of the drink.

Maybe it was just the location I went to, but though I was given the special wide boba straw, I couldn’t use it with the lid that came with my drink. My Refreshers were handed to me with the signature Starbucks sipper lid – which is too small to fit the new straws. Just a bit annoying, especially if you plan to drink this in the car or on the go!

Summer-Berry Lemonade Refresher

I sipped theSummer-Berry Lemonade Refresher sans boba first. It definitely has more flavor than the OG, but it’s overwhelmingly lemonade-y. The zesty lemonade really overpowered the berry Refresher flavor, so much so that you can’t quite taste the berry.

I might recommend ordering this bev with a light amount of lemonade, so the flavors balance out more harmoniously.

Summer Skies Drink

Okay, y'all – the Summer Skies Drink redeems the rest of the Refreshers. Essentially, it’s the Summer-Berry Refresher with a splash of coconut milk, a la the Pink Drink. I think it’s my favorite of all 3 of them!

It’s creamy and mildly sweet, which works out wonderfully. With the boba, it’s definitely giving milk tea, which I – as a boba fiend – very much appreciate. Though I like the drink itself, I still wish the boba delivered a more berry-like flavor.

White Chocolate Macadamia Cold Brew

Well, yes! The White Chocolate Macadamia Cream Cold Brew is – dare I say – the best thing on this year’s Starbucks summer menu. It’s so good. I typically associate nuttier coffee flavors with fall, but this bev has changed my mind. As much as I appreciate a sweet treat, this cold coffee was a nice reprieve from the all-new Berry Refreshers I had sipped beforehand.

This new menu item is great for those who don’t like a ton of sweetness — the bitter cold brew contrasts exceptionally well with the sweet white chocolate macadamia-flavored cold foam. It gets even better (my tasting notes read: “so very delicious”) when you stir in the cold foam with the coffee.

I also enjoy the little crunchy cookie crumble bits on top. While the popping boba (Starbucks is calling ‘em pearls) falls flat, these sprinkles actually enliven the drinking experience!

Orange Cream Cake Pop

New cake pop just dropped! And it’s everything. The hard shell that coats the tiny ball of cake in this treat is extremely satisfying. When I bit into it, it had an indescribable (in a good way) kind of crunch to it. And while the exterior is harder, the cakey inside is very moist. I wasn’t surprised at how good the texture was since most of Starbucks’ cake pops are scrumptious. That’s that for the texture…

As far as the flavor goes, I expected more of the Orange Cream Cake Pop. Sure, there’s a slight orange flavor – it’s not too overwhelming – but this skewered snack is definitely heavier on all things vanilla-y and downright sugary. It almost tastes like an orange Dreamsicle.

All that being said, I’d still order the Orange Cream Cake Pop over and over and over again if I just want a lil’ something.

Image via Starbucks

Pineapple Cloud Cake

I didn’t get to try the Pineapple Cloud Cake yet since the location I went to had sold out (a good sign, perhaps)! According to Starbucks, it’s “an airy cake filled with layers of pineapple cream, pineapple spread and whole fruit pieces with a sweet drizzle topping.”

This post has been updated.

Just like fantasy stories can transport us to new worlds, period dramas are one way to get a whole new (er, old) glimpse of the world you wouldn't see otherwise. Just like contemporary films, period dramas have their fair share of relationship drama and scandal, with some amazing outfits to boot. After you've watched (and rewatched) season 3 of Bridgerton, add one — or better yet, all — of these picks to your watchlist! Once you've figured out what you're pressing play on first, read up on why The Bridgerton Cast Is “Obsessed” With Claudia Jessie.

Atonement — Stream on Prime Video

Image via Universal Pictures

Every time I talk to my team here at Brit + Co about their favorite period dramas, Atonement always makes the list. And for good reason! It's an emotional, sweeping piece that feels like different genres as it moves from family drama to romance to a war epic. The cast includes names like Saoirse Ronan, James McAvoy, and Keira Knightley.

Little Women — Stream on Hulu

Image via Sony Pictures

Everyone can love this story, even if you don't have sisters — although being a sister has definitely made me love it even more. There are two versions I recommend: the 1994 version with Winona Ryder, Christian Bale, and Kirsten Dunst, or Greta Gerwig's 2019 version with Saoirse Ronan, Timothée Chalamet, and Emma Watson.

In my opinion, Greta's version is a little bit more thought-provoking for the viewer, but between both film's arcs, I prefer the 1994 film's linear structure. You can't go wrong with either movie, so why not watch both?

Emily — Stream on Paramount+ With Showtime

Image via Bleecker Street

My Letterboxd review after seeing Emily in theaters basically called this family the English, more tragic version of Little Women's March sisters. The celebration of creativity and identity feel even more powerful against the darker aesthetic and all of the painful experiences Emily Brontë lives through. Plus, it has one of the most emotional scores of 2023 that I've had on repeat ever since I watched it!

Mr. Malcolm's List — Stream on Paramount+ With Showtime

Image via Bleecker Street

When Julia Thistlewaite gets rejected by London's most eligible bachelor (the titular Mr. Malcolm), she decides to turn her friend into his ideal match, and get a little bit of revenge while she's at it. Anyone who loves Bridgerton's costumes (and Princess Diana's revenge dress) is gonna want to add this to their queue.

Pride & Prejudice — Rent on Amazon Prime

Image via Focus Features

Avid fans of Jane Austen's book (including yours truly) will likely give you two recommendations that each have their own viral scene: Colin Firth's lake diving in the 1995 BBC mini series or Matthew MacFadyen's hand flex after helping Keira Knightley into a carriage in the 2005 film. All jokes aside, both titles are wonderful celebrations of the story!

Belle — Stream on Max

Image via Searchlight Pictures

In this political, historical romance, Belle is the illegitimate, biracial daughter of a British admiral who's raised by her uncle. As she grows up alongside her cousin, Belle questions her identity as she realizes she belongs with neither the servants nor the family. And when she meets John, she becomes in integral part of the abolitionist movement in England.

Downton Abbey — Stream on Peacock

Image via PBS/NBC

If you love period pieces but prefer a slower pace, I'd recommend Downton Abbey. The stakes are high and some viewers still haven't gotten over the death of their favorite character (I'm talking about myself here), but I don't think it's as overstimulating as a lot of other dramas involving war, death, and relationships. Plus you literally CANNOT go wrong with Maggie Smith as the Dowager Countess. The studio just announced a third movie, so now is the perfect time to start the series!

Becoming Jane — Rent on Amazon Prime

Image via Disney/Miramax

James McAvoy makes the list again with this semi-biographical film on Jane Austen's life. One of the best parts of any historical drama is when the main couple dances at a ball, and Becoming Jane has one of my favorite dances of all time. Fans of the author criticized the film when it came out, but if you go into it with an open mind, it's very enjoyable (and might just make you cry, too).

Marie Antoinette — Stream on Max

Image via Columbia Pictures

I finally watched Sofia Coppola's iconic film for the first time, and it was as much a feast for the eyes as I'd hoped. Kirsten Dunst stuns as the infamous queen, and in addition to the textured, maximalist visuals, the story did make me think about Marie Antoinette in a new way. Considering I've been obsessed with her since middle school, that's saying something!

Emma — Stream on Prime Video

Image via Focus Features

If you love the visuals in Marie Antoinette, then I'm pretty sure you'll love this 2020 Jane Austen retelling. Every detail of the movie feels like its own piece of art (even the physical blocking and movements of the actors feels like a dance), and they all come together to create something cohesive, beautiful, and fun. You can also go for Gwyneth Paltrow's 1996 version or Clueless, which was inspired by Austen's book.

Sense and Sensibility — Rent on Amazon Prime

Image via Columbia Pictures

With names like Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, and Hugh Grant, this movie has always felt wildly underrated, so consider this my official plea asking you to watch it. It's got everything: Family! Drama! True love! Taylor Swift also said during her Tribeca Film Festival talk in 2022 that it inspired her album Evermore, so there's that.

Why Didn't They Ask Evans? — Stream on BritBox

Image via BritBox

I love this miniseries so much that I watch it every year. At this point, it's a tradition! Lucy Boynton and Will Poulter are so fun together, and their banter will leave rom-com lovers giggling and kicking their feet. Plus the 1930s fashions are just SO good.

Let us know what your favorite period dramas are in the comments, and check out the 2024 Movies you can look forward to this year!
