The 5 Best Heist Movies of All Time (& Where To Stream Them)

Best Heist Movies
Sony Pictures

One of the reasons I love heist movies so much is because of how high the stakes are. It’s often gripping, nerve-wracking, and tense, yet the genre can only be pulled off to perfection when the storyline itself is engaging.

Another essential factor is the characters themselves. If I don’t care about any of the lead ensemble members in the film, I don’t care about the film, period. I need charisma, I need chemistry, I need banter! Without it, what’s the point?

With this in mind, here are the absolute greatest heist movies of all time that incorporate all of these essential ingredients to concoct the perfect film within this genre. Which of these is your fave?

Robert De Niro in Heat

Twentieth Century Fox

Heat — Stream on Prime Video

Fans of heist movies are bound to talk your ear off about the 1995 classic, The Heat, and for good reason. The film offers an outstanding performance by Robert De Niro, as he attempts, in a state of obsessive fury, to find a ruthless criminal who usually leaves no trace of his heists. But he’s gotten cocky, it seems, as he and his team of skilled thieves end up leaving behind one major clue for the LAPD. As the film progresses, De Niro has one goal in mind: to track down the man in charge and take him down for good.

Gang Song in Parasite

NEON

Parasite — Stream on HBO Max

Parasite is widely considered one of the greatest movies in recent years. In fact, The New York Times has recently compiled a list of the top 100 movies of the 21st century, with Parasite listed as number 1! That’s a pretty impressive accomplishment if you ask me. This Korean film is a perfect heist drama because it has you sympathizing in a major way with the bandits.

Ansel Elgort in Baby Driver

Sony Pictures

Baby Driver — Stream on Tubi

Baby Driver isn’t only one of the greatest heist movies I’ve ever seen, it’s also one of the greatest movies I’ve ever gotten the pleasure of watching, period. This comes as little to no surprise thanks to the talented cast, as well as the directorial genius of Edgar Wright, who knows just how to flourish his films with endless creativity and movie magic.

Nicolas Cage in National Treasure

Disney

National Treasure — Stream on Disney+

National Treasure is the national treasure of heist movies. Sorry, I had to say it. I remember watching it with my friends as a kid during a slumber party, and we were all screaming with excitement and laughter. It’s just a truly fun flick within this genre.

There are rumors of a National Treasure 3 with Nicholas Cage set to return to cinemas in the distant future, but unfortunately, we don’t have any clear insight yet as to when it will premiere in theaters.
Ben Affleck in The Town

Warner Bros.

The Town — Stream on Paramount+

As someone who went to school in Boston, I was instantly drawn to the familiar Bostonian culture in the 2010 film, The Town. This movie boasts a stellar cast, as well as outstanding performances from Ben Affleck, Jeremy Reiner, and Rebecca Hall. I found myself on the edge of my seat the entire time.
