The premise revolves around Mike Hammer, a private investigator who takes on murder cases yet "plays by his own rules," according to The Hollywood Reporter. Hammer also presents himself as an elusive protagonist as he has a flame for his assistant, Velda. The film/book is part of an even larger franchise, as there have been several movie and TV adaptations such as I, The Jury and Kiss Me Deadly starring Ralph Meeker in 1955's. Like James Earl Jones' iconic Darth Vader, a coveted character in the world of science fiction, Mike Hammer acts like this for fans of crime dramas and mysterious, detective-like personas.
The series zooms in on the Louisiana State Police homicide investigation unit as they reopen a previous murder case and get to the bottom of what really happened. If Pizolatto knows one thing, it is how to successfully lure viewers into a world of corruption and suspense, zooming specifically into the minds of those who hope to solve a mystery. Fans have no doubt he will be able to portray Mike Hammer in this light.
