My Best Friend's Wedding, starring Julia Roberts and Cameron Diaz, takes all the problematic romance movie tropes we’ve grown sick of over the years, and flips these tropes right on their head. In the movie, Roberts portrays Jules, a woman who is hopelessly in love with her best friend, Michael (Dermot Mulroney.)
The two make a marriage pact that they’ll wed one another if neither finds someone else to tie the knot with by age 28. Unfortunately for Jules, Michael falls head over heels in love with Diaz’s character, 20-year-old Kimberly Wallace. Of course, we, along with Jules, are inclined to cast Kimmy as the evil woman who swept in to steal Michael away from the woman he should truly be with, AKA Roberts’ character. But instead of villainizing Diaz like we might see in lazier screenplays, she's instead depicted as a sweet, endearing young woman who may be bad at karaoke, but ultimately has a heart of gold.

I remember when I first watched the movie, I was initially prepared to roll my eyes. It looked like your typical rom-com where the besties end up realizing they were right in front of each other's eyes the whole time, and ride off into the sunset in the end, living happily ever after. But when I quickly realized this movie was going in a more progressive direction, filled with twists and turns I never saw coming, I realized how special and ahead of its time it was.
With all this in mind, it will be fascinating to see where the characters have ended up after all the time since Michael and Kimmy's wedding. Is Michael still with Kimmy? Has Jules found a new man to fall in love with? Where have all the characters ended up following that explosive wedding all those years ago? I personally can’t wait to find out. Plus, it’s always a gift to see Julia Roberts gracing my screen. Furthermore, Cameron Diaz just stepped back into the spotlight after a nearly 11-year hiatus, so this film will be the perfect way to welcome her back with open arms.
