8 Buzzy Netflix Originals to Stream in February 2019
Netflix of course has a massive library of classic films and TV shows for you to check out this Valentine's Day, but this month the streaming service is also premiering some love-themed content of its own. And that's not all: There's a promising new series co-created by Amy Poehler, some inspiring (and tearjerking!) original movies, and a couple of returning favorites, too. Here are eight buzzy Netflix originals to add to your list in February 2019. (Photos via Netflix)
Russian Doll (February 1): Starring Natasha Lyonne (Orange Is the New Black) and co-created by Lyonne, Amy Poehler, and Leslye Headland, this new Groundhog Day-esque series sees a woman unable to escape her own birthday party as she relives it — and her death — over and over again. Velvet Buzzsaw (February 1): Jake Gyllenhaal stars in this supernatural art heist thriller as an art critic invested in a series of newly discovered paintings by an unknown artist. When the powers-that-be in the art world start trying to profit off of the paintings, a mysterious force sets out to seek revenge. Natalia Dyer (Stranger Things), Toni Collette, Rene Russo, and more also star. (Photo via Claudette Barius/Netflix)
High Flying Bird (February 8): Breakout Moonlight actor André Holland stars as a high-powered sports agent who tries to disrupt the NBA from the inside-out by pitching a controversial idea to his rookie client during a lockout. Holland and director Steven Soderbergh previously worked together on the short-lived seriesThe Knick, with fantastic results, and High Flying Bird looks likely to live up to the same standard. Atlanta's Zazie Beets and American Vandal's Melvin Gregg also star — and the whole movie was shot on an iPhone! Pretty cool. (Photo via Peter Andrews/Netflix)
Patriot Act With Hasan Minhaj: Volume 2 (February 10): Hasan Minhaj's comedy-talk show hybrid made a splash when it first premiered in October, and now the Daily Show correspondent is back for more, sharing his unique perspectives on news, politics, and culture in weekly episodes. Dating Around (February 14): In honor of Valentine's Day, Netflix is unveiling a new reality show that revolves around the often-awkward world of dating. In each episode, one single person goes on five (!) first dates before deciding who they'd like to see again. Yes, we will absolutely be binge-watching this on the 14th. See you there. The Umbrella Academy (February 15): Adapted from the comic of the same name by My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way (let that sink in for a sec), Netflix's new superhero show depicts a funny and mega-dysfunctional family of misfits with superpowers (or, at the very least, some killer violin skills). If the first trailer is any indication, it's going to be a fun and darkly funny watch. (Photo via Christos Kalohoridis/Netflix)
Chef's Table: Volume 6 (February 22): The latest season of Chef's Table will continue its season 5 mission to showcase more diversity in its cooks and culinary discoveries. Season 6 will feature some of the best Southern, African, and New American cuisine from chef Mashama Bailey of The Grey in Savannah, Georgia; Asma Khan's drool-worthy Indian dishes at London's Darjeeling Express; and more. Paddleton (February 22): Netflix had a breakout year for original movies in 2018, and Paddleton seems poised to become a tear-jerking, life-affirming staple in the streaming service's library. It stars Ray Romano and Mark Duplass as neighbors whose friendship takes an unexpected turn — and gains a rarely depicted tender new dimension — when Duplass' character is diagnosed with terminal cancer.
