MGM+'s New Period Drama 'Robin Hood' Is For The 'Game Of Thrones' Obsessed

At this point, there have been so many retellings of the classic Robin Hood story that it’s hard for me to recall what the original tale is all about. Growing up, I remember consuming all things from this medieval folklore character, from side-splitting funny movies like Robin Hood Men in Tights, to the Disney movie where they replace the titular character with a cartoon fox. Classic Disney.

While many of these adaptations have been met with mixed to poor reviews, including those listed above, the medieval tale of Robin Hood is actually quite brilliant. What’s fascinating is the fact that the character has been around since the 1300s, yet still remains such a pivotal part of pop culture. Yet with all these retellings of the adaptation, it would be great to get back to the original themes, while exploring the origins of Robin Hood as a character. That’s where MGM’s Robin Hood comes in, which promises to be the ultimate period drama we’ve all been waiting for — and with the lush costumes, gorgeous locations, and Sean Bean of it all, it's perfect for Game of Thrones fans.

Here's everything you need to know about the brand new Robin Hood.

The show follows Rob and Marian, who fall in love after Normandy invades England — and they use their relationship and power to fight for peace.

Robin Hood is more than your typical bandit who simply steals for the purpose of self-preservation and greed. What makes the classic literary character unique is the fact that he only steals from the power-hungry nobles and monarchs, then secretly offers these goods to the poor.

Since the character initially showed up in the 1300s, we have to remember that this was during a period in history where unjust feudal systems were prevalent. Essentially, the minuscule percentage of noblemen and monarchs had all the power and wealth, while the rest of the population (aka the vast majority) was forced into hard labor and peasantry. With this historical backdrop in mind, Robin Hood served as an incredibly empowering character who fought for justice, stood up for the downtrodden, and protected the impoverished.
