Whenever I ask someone to rank the top three best shows of all time, they always hit me with: Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, and True Detective. I’ll never forget when this show first started airing, and my family would gather around to lose ourselves in this masterpiece created by Nic Pizzolatto. No matter what ocean of chaos was going on in our day-to-day lives, nothing else mattered during those sacred hours when True Detective aired. It was our sole focus. And for four glorious seasons, we as a family laughed, cried, gasped, and screamed at the television set more times than we could count while watching the hit HBO series.
We were sadly under the impression that the series had ended for good following the season 4 finale, which premiered back in January 2024. It has been well over a year since then, and we haven’t heard a peep from the showrunners...until now! Here's everything we know about True Detective season 5 so far.

Will there be a 'True Detective' season 5?
Finally, some good news! After a long and brutal wait for fans dying to know whether the crime drama would continue following that shocking season 4 finale, it looks like we’re in luck. According to HBO juggernaut Francesca Orsi, True Detective writer Issa López has a whole lot more story to tell when it comes to this masterpiece of prestige television. “Issa has a lot to say, not unlike she did with Night Country,” she revealed to Deadline. “It’s a different milieu but just as powerful.”
When will 'True Detective' season 5 come out?
The series hasn’t begun filming yet and is still very much in the pre-production phase of the process. With this in mind, there is no set date yet for season 5 of the prestige drama. With this in mind, Orsi says we can expect the fifth installment to air sometime around 2027. I can’t wait that long, Orsi!!
Who's starring in 'True Detective' season 5?
True Detective is known for its impressive, star-studded cast. We’ve seen everyone on here, from Rachel McAdams, Woody Harrelson, Matthew McConaughey, Vince Vaughn, and Alexandra Daddario, just to name a few. Since big names are common on this particular series, it has many fans excitedly speculating over who they can expect to see in the fifth season of TD. As of now, according to several sources, it looks like Nicholas Cage is being heavily eyed for a lead role in the series. America’s very own National Treasure starring on my fave show? Yes please!
