In the year-and-a-half since Camila Cabello left Fifth Harmony, she’s established a mega-successful solo career. But that hasn’t stopped the singer from reflecting on how things fell apart with her former girl group.
“I don’t think there was ever a point where I was like, ‘I want to leave because I’m the breakout star,'” Cabello said in a new Rolling Stone interview. The “Havana” singer has said in the past that while she definitely had solo aspirations, it wasn’t her plan to leave Fifth Harmony in order to pursue them, and an ultimatum from the group is what caused her December 2016 departure. Now, Cabello can’t help but think that with some time and maturity, things might have turned out differently.
“We were just really young,” she told Rolling Stone. “If we were in the same situation now, it would probably be fine for everyone to make their own music while being in the group, because I think everyone understands now that you can’t limit people. That’s why people break free.”
Cabello has admitted before that the months following her exit were emotional. One particularly difficult moment came when the remaining Fifth Harmony members staged a stunt at the 2017 MTV VMAs that dramatically threw a fifth woman — who many thought represented Cabello — off stage during their performance.
The group has since announced an indefinite hiatus. And while the fandom has been split in their support, Cabello has continued to find friends in the pop world, including friend and collaborator Shawn Mendes and tour mate Taylor Swift, who cheered her on at the Billboard Awards earlier this month.
