Make This DIY Cooler Hack to Keep Your Gelato Chill All Summer Long

Summer is upon us, and it’s officially the best season to treat yourself to delicious frozen desserts. While they’re especially amazing under the bright summer sun, it’s hard to keep them from melting in your hands… and on those adorable sundresses!

We’ve got you covered for all your summer outings! We teamed up with Talenti to share a simple DIY hack to help make eating gelato (or any frozen treat) on-the-go an easy reality.

Talenti gelato and sorbettos are among my favorite desserts. Each flavor is well-crafted with the best ingredients from around the world. Also, as a sucker for good packaging design, I’m a huge fan of their screw-top containers. I can’t tell you how many empty Talenti containers I have in my house to use as storage because it would be shameful.

Such deliciousness needs to be taken care of, don’t you think? This cooler hack allows you to bring your frozen treats on the go while keeping all your pints, toppings, and utensils organized. Read on to find out how to DIY the perfect gelato cooler.

Materials and Tools:

  • styrofoam
  • cooler
  • webbing ribbon
  • velcro stickers
  • measuring tape
  • scissors
  • utility knife
  • pencil

Instructions:

1. Measure the length and width of the inside of your cooler. Mark those measurements on styrofoam and cut out.

2. Make sure your piece of styrofoam fits in the cooler. It should be snug, but still easy to take in and out.

3. Place baby food jars and pints on the styrofoam and trace around the bottom rims with a pencil. Cut out circles.

4. Mark the width of the webbing ribbon on a corner of the styrofoam and cut out a slim rectangle the size of the ribbon. Pull the ribbon through the slit and tie a knot. Repeat on the corner across from it to form a handle. Make another handle on the other side of the styrofoam.

5. To make straps for ice cream bowls, measure a piece of webbing ribbon that is two inches more than the width of stack of bowls. Stick pieces of velcro stickers on the ends of the ribbon. Stick the ends on the side of the cooler. Peel off one end of the ribbon to slide in the bowls.

6. Repeat Step 5 to make straps for spoons and a gelato scooper inside the cooler.

7. Fill the cooler with dry ice. Be sure to wear gloves when handling dry ice to not burn yourself.

8. Fill the styrofoam tray with pints and baby food jars. Add sundae toppings in the jars. Place the tray in the cooler and you’re good to go!

Measure the length and width of the inside of your cooler.

Mark those measurements on styrofoam and cut out.

Make sure your piece of styrofoam fits in the cooler. It should be snug, but still easy to take in and out.

Place baby food jars and pints on the styrofoam and trace around the bottom rims with a pencil. Cut out circles.

Mark the width of the webbing ribbon on a corner of the styrofoam and cut out a slim rectangle the size of the ribbon. Pull the ribbon through the slit and tie a knot. Repeat on the corner across from it to form a handle. Make another handle on the other side of the styrofoam.

Make straps for your spoons and scooper inside the cooler with webbing ribbon.

Fill the cooler with dry ice. Be sure to wear gloves when handling dry ice to not burn yourself.

Place tray in cooler and fill with your pint — in my case, Talenti — and baby food jars.

Add sundae toppings in the jars. Add sprinkles, nuts, or candy. For today, I’m going to stick with classic summer berries.

Time to hit the park!

I’ll take a scoop of Double Dark Chocolate, Southern Butter Pecan, Mediterranean Mint, and Caramel Cookie Crunch please! And some berries on top!

Gelato, I love you.

A perfect day for me includes warm sunshine, being outside in nature, and delicious sweet treats. This picture includes all three.

Talenti tower!

Summer. Is. Here.

Rustic home decor is making a solid comeback this year, and we're really not sad about it. According to Pinterest, searches for Spanish Mediterranean kitchens rose by a crazy 1,150 percent in the last year, and demand for Mexican farmhouse decor (think earthy patterned tiles and rustic terracotta decor) rose by a not-so-small 203 percent. Clean, sleek and modern is not for everyone. For some, imperfections, handmade decor, and rich color are where the beauty of a home really slays.

Mastering the look is the married couple and design duo behind the Los Angeles design firm Bungalowe, Karan and Sapna Aggarwal. Here's a peek inside their recently renovated home in the Highland Park neighborhood of LA, staged beautifully by Pride of Place with floral design by Jessie Graham.

Photography by Gavin Cater

Their stunning new project was inspired by their trip to Oaxaca, Mexico. "This sweet Spanish style home draws inspiration from our memorable trips to Grana B&B in Oaxaca and the enchanting Ojai Valley Inn," says Sapna.

"The decorative, hand-painted tiles from Old Mexico adorn the baseboards and accent walls, evoking a sense of tranquility and nostalgia," says Sapna. The design beautifully connects the historic Spanish style with an earthy color palette and eclectic furniture.

Photography by Gavin Cater

The style is unique and artistic, a little of an elevated boho aesthetic, that feels timeless and a little like you're on a permanent vacation! Notice the clay vases, dried flowers, wooden spoons and bowls against a rich emerald green tile. "The green zellige tiles in the kitchen and bathroom celebrate the organic beauty found in nature's imperfections," says Sapna.

More and more homeowners are choosing to create cozier kitchen spaces that embrace the natural world, says Chris Alexakis, co-founder of CabinetSelect (not affiliated with this project). Some ways to get the Mexican farmhouse look? "You can introduce splashes of color with uniquely patterned tiles and rustic terracotta decorations. The earthy rustic feel of Mexican-style kitchens pairs exquisitely with popular farmhouse decor to create cozy, natural spaces," adds Alexakis.

Sapna and Karan wanted to pay homage to the original Spanish architecture of their home. They creatively transformed the home from a one bedroom, one bath home into a stylish and functional two bedroom, two-and-a-half bath, plus office.

Photography by Gavin Cater

The materials used on the inside were all selected to honor the home's history, and included handmade and hand-painted decorative tiles from Old Mexico and handmade Moroccan Zellige from Zia Tile. Love this arched nook with colorful tile, a unique alternative to paint or wallpaper.

The new office addition is a cozy nook where a soothing color palette creates a peaceful place to get work done. Benjamin Moore Brazilian Rainforest paint trims the windows, pottery lines the built-in shelves, and the linen club chairs offer a spot to read or rest. The colonial-style chair with tall ladder back is understated but sublime.

The bedrooms are minimal with cozy, luxe linens and handmade textures. The wrought iron bed adds character and a vintage quality that grounds the room.

The microcement on the interior walls is imperfectly beautiful in a rustic way. This wavy sink is a showstopper.

The terracotta tile floors are a beautiful alternative to oak flooring we see everywhere. "Saltillo tiles, synonymous with traditional adobe homes, grace the floors, seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor living," says Sapna.

The fringe blanket is elegant and rustic at the same time in a breezy white. The tile and arched nook from the living room is echoed here too to create connection and symmetry throughout the home.

Built-in cabinetry with open shelving adds extra storage space, plus a decorative element to showcase more gorgeous pottery and handmade baskets. "Thoughtfully integrated custom cabinetry throughout the home complements the striking tile-work with its warm wood tones," says Sapna.

Elements like the green zellige tile are repeated throughout, creating a simplicity to the design. The wall treatment extends to the floor with a seamless transition between room and shower. Pottery and plants in the bath are an inviting touch.

Here's more of that colorful ceramic tile with warm wooden shelving to display bathroom decor.

Baskets, plants, and mementos from their travels personalize and warm up the home. "The light fixtures were designed to evoke a vacation-like ambiance, offering a sense of relaxation and luxury that enriches every corner of the home," says Sapna.

Another unique rustic sink stands out as an artistic piece in a serene setting.

Photography by Gavin Cater

Los Angeles is perfect for indoor/outdoor living and the same rustic aesthetic is used in the exterior design of the Spanish home. Not fussy, just lovely! "The outdoor space, designed around the original river rock pond, boasts a spacious lounge under a majestic tree with hanging lanterns, a dining table overlooking stunning city vistas and a terraced garden. To complete this outdoor sanctuary, a dedicated carport can double as a picture perfect terrace to host large dinner parties," says Sapna.

Wondering if you're eligible? Any business operating in the state of California, with 1 to 750 employees, is eligible. You just need to be a business entity (Sole Proprietor, LLC, Cooperative, Corporation, Partnership, S-Corporation, or Not-For-Profit), and operate in an eligible industry according to the 2022 NAICS codes (read: a legit business).

Here’s how it works:

Step 1: Fill out a short pre-application questionnaire that takes just minutes to complete. No credit check required!

Step 2: Based on your eligibility, they’ll match you with lenders who fit your needs.

Step 3: Review details about each lender, select the one you like, and they’ll connect you with them.

Most California Small Business Loan Match lenders are certified as Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs), which means they offer competitive rates but specialize in helping borrowers who don’t meet the rigid lending criteria of traditional banks — for example, small businesses that have a lower credit score, a prior defaulted loan, or no up-front collateral. CDFIs specialize in helping people in lower-income communities too, and offer a much more flexible and affordable repayment plan than online lenders or Merchant Cash Advance (MCA) loans.

Check them out to help you grow your business, meeting our mission to help you succeed! Good luck!

On a wellness retreat at Dream Inn Santa Cruz, we were treated to a dinner by Executive Chef Gustavo Trejo and a live class on how to make this easy asparagus soup. It was so easy that I memorized the recipe without ever writing anything down. Given the bright flavors, the creamy goodness, and the extra greens it gives me, it's now my favorite go-to lunch.

This simple, stunning recipe is so delicious that I couldn't just keep it to myself, though. With permission from the chef, here's the delicious and super healthy asparagus soup recipe.

Ingredients:

  • equal parts asparagus (I used one Whole Foods pack for two servings)
  • equal parts yellow onion (I used one half of a large onion)
  • EVOO and salt to taste

Prep:

  • Snap off the stems from asparagus.
  • Slice onion thinly, against the grain.

Cooking instructions:

  • Heat EVOO in a Dutch oven or soup pot on low heat.
  • Add onion slices and cook until golden.
  • Add asparagus and cook for 5-10 mins.
  • Add enough water to cover ingredients.
  • Bring to a boil, and then let simmer for 5 mins.
  • Add salt to taste.
  • Pour pot ingredients into a blender. Blend on low, increasing speed slowly.
  • Pour olive oil (about 2 Tbsp. per cup) into the blender as it blends until you get a creamy texture.
  • Serve with a sprinkle of salt.

You can elevate the dish by adding a dollop of butter or cream, but the olive oil truly enhances its creamy texture without the added dairy (vegans rejoice!). Add crunchy rustic bread — sourdough, anyone? — on the side if you like! No matter how you choose to personalize this dish, I'm pretty sure it'll quickly become a weekday (or weekend) fave in your meal rotation!

Soaking up the sun and enjoying a excellent book is essential to bookworms, even if some of us are still traumatized by summer reading in high school. Don’t worry, you no longer have to panic read The Catcher in the Ryein two weeks or think about the importance of the green light in The Great Gatsby(and if you don’t think it’s important that’s totally okay — F. Scott Fitzgerald stole his wife’s ideas anyway 🤭).

But it really is simply the best time of the year to read! The sun is out past 4pm, the Aperol spirtzes are flowing, and it’s the perfect time to relax. Whether your turning pages by the pool, listening to an audiobook on a hike, or enjoying your e-reader inside, we’ve got 17 books for you to add to your summer reading list.

Summer Lovin’ Romances

Funny Story by Emily Henry

Let’s go ahead and get this recommendation out the way, shall we? The queen of beach reads (literally) released a new novel, and the people are here for it!

Daphne’s world gets only a little — scratch that — a lot messed up when her fiancé realizes he’s in love with his childhood best friend. So she does what any sensible person would do and becomes a children’s librarian in Michigan. Hew new roommate, Miles Nowak, is the only person who can understand what she’s going through. Mainly because he’s her ex-fiancé's new fiancée’s ex. Yep, you read that right.

Daphne and Miles spend the summer posting deliberately misleading photos on their adventures together… but is it actually a ruse?

Enjoy the book that is about to be all over your feed NOW!

Let’s DM the only other person who has the same problem — maybe they’ll break their curse.
