History meets mystery? I’m in!
Apple TV’s 'Berlin Noir' Adaptation Set To Star ‘Slow Horses’ Actor Jack Lowden

There have been several iconic period dramas and detective shows that have graced our screens in the past handful of years, but none have captured my interest to the extent as the much-anticipated Apple TV+ adaptation of the Berlin Noir series. The show is based on the acclaimed novel Metropolis, and it captures the contradictory chaos of 1920s Germany. Specifically, it takes us along the cobblestone streets of Berlin, where social and economic tensions are bubbling up to the surface. Here’s what else you need to know about the gripping upcoming show!

What is ‘Berlin Noir’ about?
Berlin Noir is set in 1920s Germany. The division at the time was palpable. On the one hand, you’d find aristocrats clad in jewels while dining under a golden chandelier as they feasted like royals. Meanwhile, just feet away, you’d discover a malnourished family shivering without shelter, and grasping onto each other just to keep warm.
Not only was the economic divide evident, but social tensions also led to a horrific disconnect amongst the people of Berlin, with the city utterly torn on what constitutes “utopia.” While some fought for artistic freedom and sexual liberation via underground theater clubs and avant-garde cabarets, others were stark in their belief that the city would fall to pieces without traditional values and conservative conformity.
This atmosphere, filled with a rich blend of starry-eyed excitement and hot-blooded strain, painted the streets of 1928 Berlin. Unfortunately, the division amongst citizens led to so much malice and genuine hatred that it caused several murders targeted at the lower class. In an effort to “clean the streets of filth,” two serial killers have begun killing prostitutes as well as war veterans who were left debilitated and crippled alongside the streets of Berlin.
Bernie Gunther, the young detective from the book series, joins a group of officers who are on a mission to find these serial killers and take them down. With brilliant minds on the team of investigators, as well as the help of some (very) unlikely sources, will detective Bernie Gunther be able to find and capture the men who are taking the lives of innocent citizens? Or has the city itself become such a hopeless place, filled with too much hatred and division for any sliver of justice?
Is ‘Berlin Noir’ based on a book?
Yes! It’s based on Metropolis, a book in author Philip Kerr’s Bernie Gunther series. Fans of the novels are thrilled to see a television adaptation of the beloved book. The recent announcement of the TV adaptation is particularly moving, considering the fact that Metropolis was Kerr’s final novel in the series, as he tragically passed away in 2018. Many fans believe that keeping the story alive through another medium will be a great way to pay tribute to Kerr’s masterful storytelling.
Who’s in the ‘Berlin Noir’ cast?
So far, the only announced cast member is Jack Lowden, playing Detective Bernie Gunther. You’ve seen Lowden in movies like Dunkirk and Mary Queen of Scotts. He also currently stars alongside Gary Oldman in the highly popular Apple TV+ show, Slow Horses.
Oh, and did we mention he’s about to be our newest Mr. Darcy? Yeah, it’s safe to say we’re big fans of Jack Lowden over here!
When does ‘Berlin Noir’ come out?
Berlin Noir isn’t even the official title of the show yet — IMDB still lists it as “Untitled Bernie Gunther Series” — so the project is very much in early stages. With that in mind, we’d guess that the show will debut sometime in late 2026, or early 2027.
Where can I watch ‘Berlin Noir’?
The Berlin Noir series will come out on Apple TV+, so you’ll be able to stream it there once it premieres!
