Though it’s pretty clear *something* is going on between Riverdale costars Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse — they looked very cozy on their recent Hawaiian vacay together — neither is willing to confirm or deny that they’re a couple. And while Sprouse has his own reasons for keeping things quiet, Reinhart has just revealed why it’s “brutal” to have a relationship in the spotlight.

“People are just dying to know information about if I’m in a relationship or not. I understand the interest, but it’s called a private life for a reason. And it’s not something that I owe the world,” the 21-year-old said in a new interview with V Magazine.

Fans have been shipping the pair ever since Sprouse posted a stunning pic of Reinhart on Instagram last March, but she doesn’t give much weight to the chatter. “People are going to say anything and everything,” she told the mag. “They’re going to say that I love KJ [Apa], they’re gonna say that I love Cami[la Mendes], and they’re gonna say that I love Cole: It’s inevitable.”

Knowing that doesn’t change her stance on closely guarding her personal life. “I’m not at a point in my life where I’m ready to openly confirm, deny, or talk about a relationship that I’m in, because I think it’s brutal to have a relationship in the spotlight where I can be scrutinized by anyone and everyone.”

She’s well-aware of what she’s up against, admitting, “It’s the story of my life every time I’m on Twitter. I feel like every time I tweeted something that was a little opinionated, or every time I posted something on Tumblr that seemed a little private, it’s all of a sudden making news, relationship-wise.”

We can’t imagine it’s easy, but it certainly sounds like Reinhart knows what she’s doing.
