Rory Should Have Said Yes To Logan's Proposal — & It Would Have Totally Fixed 'A Year In The Life'

Even though Gilmore Girls came out nearly 25 years ago, in October 2000, it continues to live rent-free in the heads of viewers, both young and old. Millennials were the first to fall in love with Lorelai and Rory's mother-daughter relationship. Then, Gen Z followed suit, making the series a comfort watch that transcends generations.

It may be shocking to learn that, from January to June of 2023, Gilmore Girls actually amassed 500 million total viewing hours on Netflix, pushing past classics like Seinfeld and newer hits like Stranger Things.

But while the tight bond that Lorelai and Rory share definitely helps the show feel cozy, we'd be lying if we didn't admit to caring equally about Rory's love life.

Keep reading for a look at the iconic Gilmore Girls relationships — and why Rory Gilmore should have married Logan Huntzberger.

We followed Rory from age 16 to her college graduation, and she had a trio of intriguing love interests that still spark controversy to this day. Of course, there was her first boyfriend, Dean, who encompassed the familiar "boy next door" trope. Then came Jess, an edgier, more mysterious character. Who can blame teenage Rory for falling for that?

In our humble opinion, though, Logan, whom Rory met during her sophomore year at Yale, was her ideal match. And honestly, Rory should've just accepted his proposal during the season 7 finale of Gilmore Girls.

We realize this might seem like a hot take, but bear with us for a moment. A TikToker named Ingrid Griffin recently posted a now-viral video asking fans of the series to share their most unhinged takes on Gilmore Girls. The inquiry gave way to over 14,000 comments, some of which share our same perspective that Rory should have ended up with Logan, even if they had a long engagement before officially tying the knot.

The fact of the matter is that, sure, at the time the show concluded, Rory was only 22 years old and felt like the world was her oyster. That's understandable, given she had accepted a job to cover the Barack Obama campaign trail. Not to mention, she grew up with an extremely independent mother, and given Logan's rich background and wealth of industry connections, Rory seemingly wanted to make a name for herself on her own.

However, Logan wasn't the type of guy who'd expect Rory to settle down in a traditional wife role, like her grandmother Emily Gilmore, after saying, "I do." First of all, he'd always been supportive of Rory's drive and career aspirations. Additionally, he landed a job in California and told Rory that she'd easily be able to get a job at a newspaper there.

Now, if we think back to when we were 22 years old, the idea of marriage probably would've sounded pretty daunting to us as well. Yet, if we consider what happened to Rory in the 10 years following her graduation from Yale, we see that perhaps tying the knot was actually a better option.

In 2016, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life was released. This four-episode series reunion checked back in on the lives of our favorite characters, and unfortunately, viewers learned that Rory's career hadn't panned out as planned. Instead, she hadn't accomplished much in her field, didn't have a steady job, and was still casually seeing Logan, despite him being engaged to another woman!

It's clear Rory continued to harbor feelings for him, and if she'd said yes to his proposal and just had a long engagement, she would've ended up with someone she truly loved instead of having another affair. Moreover, Logan's connections to the journalism field could've undeniably helped push her career forward.

Even so, we must remember that hindsight is always 20/20, and at the time, Rory really was a bright-eyed and bushy-tailed young woman who had no clue what was out there waiting for her in the world. Maybe if Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life told a different story, or never came out at all, we'd feel differently. But with Rory's adult track record put into perspective, we think her decision to turn down Logan's proposal cost her both her most meaningful romantic relationship and unimaginable access to resources that would've improved her career tenfold.
