Long gone are the days when you’d slather on the baby oil and plant yourself face down on a towel for the better part of a summer afternoon. Now that you’re a mama, going out into the sun means shielding yourself and your baby from those harmful rays and relying on lotions, potions, and sprays to get you completely sunless color. We know your kiddo wants to paddle in the pool and play in the park, but those chemical-filled sunscreens are absolute no-nos. Badger Baby ($14): This pediatrician-tested product is SPF 30 and water resistant for at least 40 minutes, and contains organic ingredients. With a base made from organic sunflower oil, beeswax, and vitamin E, this sunscreen is moisturizing and soothing to baby’s sensitive skin. It gets its screening power from zinc oxide, and its packaging is BPA- and phthalate-free.
Surf Mud Pro Stick ($34): Yum. That’s chocolate you’re smelling. This kid-friendly face product has coconut oil and cocoa butter to soften tired, pool-dried skin. The convenient, mess-free stick also lets you quickly cover your kiddo’s face with the stuff.
Suntegrity Mineral Sunscreen ($24): This ethical product is 20 percent non-nano zinc, vegan, and cruelty-free. It also has super-antioxidants in it, such as green tea and pomegranate. Slather away!
Raw Elements Tinted Facial Moisturizer ($15): This one is for the moms battling the playground’s hot, sunny surface. It's fortified with black tea and coffee and provides just a hint of color, which you may need if you're serious about staying out of the sun.
Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen, Baby ($21): This pick from down under gives baby broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection. It’s also paraben-free, chemical-free, and fragrance-free. Along with being a healthier sunscreen alternative, the bottle it comes in can actually alert you of the presence of harmful sun rays; the darker the color, the more UV rays are around. Cool.
Honest Mineral Sunscreen ($14): This sunscreen is chemical-free and made with non-nano zinc, and the hypoallergenic formula contains Shea butter and coconut oil for extra hydration.
Block Island Organics Natural Mineral Sunscreen ($20): This ultra lightweight sunscreen uses all organic ingredients and is great for the whole family. There are no sulfates or parabens, and it's also eco-friendly and non-greasy.
Babo Botanicals Clear Zinc Sport Stick ($10): If your little one fights you every time you try to cover her in sunscreen, this stick will make your life much easier. Like most other good-for-you products, it’s got zinc and a few organic ingredients (this one has oils, such as jojoba) in it.
Goddess Garden Organics Baby Natural ($15): This gentle mineral sunscreen has (you guessed it!) zinc and natural ingredients in it. Good news if you’re concerned about the planet: Its packaging is reef-safe and biodegradable.
100% Pure Everywhere Body Stick ($30): With SPF 30, this sunscreen will keep out the sun’s harmful rays, but it won’t cover your kiddo with a bunch of crazy chemicals.
