Anyone else feel like we’ve been severely parched of riveting and complex female characters on TV in recent months? I don’t know, but for some reason, it just feels like the leading female roles on the small screen have been incredibly underwritten as of late. Is it just me? Am I just watching the wrong shows?

Fortunately, like a breath of fresh air, I came across the news that they were adapting the best-selling Anna Pigeon novels into a crime show on USA Network. As a big fan of the books, I was absolutely thrilled by the news. My faith in humanity, as well as TV, was immediately restored, since Anna herself is the perfect blend of complexity and intrigue.

What is 'Anna Pigeon' About?

The series tells the fascinating story of the titular character, Anna Pigeon, who serves as a park ranger and sleuth solver of crimes. She is a determined workaholic who prefers to indulge in the dramas of her career, in order to avoid the dramatics of her reality- and unfortunately, for Anna, there is a whole lot of drama to unpack within her personal life. But because she feels so haunted and weak by past traumas, she’s fully unwilling to explore how it affects her current struggles… of which there are many.
While she was once a lively city girl, tragedies have shaped Pigeon into becoming a total loner who greatly prefers her own company. Unfortunately, due to her dangerous career path and thirst to solve the most harrowing crimes, this choice makes her quite vulnerable to criminals.Who is 'Anna Pigeon' based on?
According to the author of the book series, Nevada Barr, the character of Anna Pigeon is actually based on her! Yet because the saga spans 19 novels, the author admits she has evolved over time, and is now less like her titular character.
“She is based on me — except she is taller and stronger and smarter and braver,” the author revealed in a FAQ. “We've evolved in different ways over the years, so now she is less like me. While Anna Pigeon battled alcohol dependence and slowly became more of a work-oriented loner, I've grown more whimsical, more lackadaisical, lazier, happier. I've rejoined humanity, and Anna had no intention of getting near it.”

When will 'Anna Pigeon' come out?
According to a recent Instagram post featuring showrunner Lea Thompson and star of the show Tracy Spiridakos, they're just about to get started filming the highly anticipated series.
Promoting their show, the ladies said, “If you love bada-- women, beautiful landscapes, and good mysteries, this show is for you!”
Given that they're still at the beginning of filming, we'd say you should expect this show sometime in late 2026.
