It’s been a minute since I’ve seen a TV series with a concept as original as Unspeakable Sins. The show, which is equal parts soapy as it is sexy, uncovers the unlikely romance between a married woman, Helena, and the male escort she hires. What starts off as a transactional relationship eventually spirals out of control into a once-in-a-lifetime love affair. We’re talking Nicholas Sparks levels of romance, people.
I, for one, love TV shows that depict love affairs blossoming from the most unexpected places, with the two most unlikely characters. This is precisely why I was so hooked on Unspeakable Sins from the very first episode.
The affair is already rife with tension, but to add fuel to the fire is the looming presence of Helena’s controlling and abusive husband, Claudio. Helena will do anything she can to escape her marriage, but her formidable husband refuses to let her wriggle out of his strong grip without a fight. In fact, he simply will not let her go. “This is over when I say it’s over,” Claudio threatens Helena in the series’ trailer, proving in the most toxic way imaginable that he calls the shots. What is ‘Unspeakable Sins’ about?
In a quest to trick her husband Claudio into a divorce, Helena and her lover (and hired male escort), Iván, strike up a plan to set him up. According to Helena and Iván, their key is to find out Claudio’s weak spot and then use it to their advantage. Helena notes how her husband seems to have a fixation on attractive young men, like Iván. With this in mind, they devise a plan for Iván to seduce Claudio while secretly recording their hookup via a spy camera. The two believe it will be enough evidence for Helena to divorce her controlling husband. Yet Claudio, who isn’t so quick to fall into the trap, has other plans…
Catching onto the suspicious setup almost instantly, Claudio seizes Iván and questions his motives. “Who do you work for?” he demands, sensing it’s all one big scheme.
This altercation leads to a massive fight that causes everything to fall apart at once. Helena has no choice but to pick up all the broken pieces herself, which turns out to be a nearly impossible task.
The series, while at times ridiculous, is ultimately a fun, wild ride filled with chaotic twists and turns that leave you on the edge of your seat. So long as you know what genre you’re getting yourself into, and come in with the mindset that this isn’t gonna be the next Sopranos in regards to its acclaim, you’re in for a fun ride. Unspeakable Sins is the perfect soap to binge on Netflix with a glass of wine and some popcorn.
