Everything You Need to Know About the 2017 Primetime Emmy Awards

Roll out the red carpet! The 69th Primetime Emmy Awards will take place on Sunday, September 17, 2017, at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. To make sure you don’t miss any of the action, we have the rundown on everything you need to know about this year’s show and the nominees.

What time are the 2017 Emmy Awards?

The Emmys will air live on Sunday, September 17, starting at 8pm ET and 5pm PT on CBS. The network won’t show red carpet arrivals, but E! will be serving all the best looks on their Live from the Red Carpet special prior to the show, starting at 6pm ET. (There’s also a Countdown to the Red Carpet special at 4:30pm ET.) CBS will be streaming the Emmys through its All Access platform, but you have to subscribe to access it.

Who’s hosting?

Stephen Colbert will take a break from his CBS Late Show desk to make his Emmys hosting debut. We already know he’ll bring the jokes, but we also wouldn’t be surprised if he put his epic song-and-dance skills to use at some point.

Who’s presenting?

Some of the small screen’s best, many of whom are nominees themselves, will make their way to the podium to hand out trophies to their contemporaries. The first round of presenters announced for 2017 include Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Debra Messing, Riz Ahmed, Tracee Ellis Ross, Nicole Kidman, Anna Faris, Anthony Anderson, Alec Baldwin, Jason Bateman, Jessica Biel, Edie Falco, Allison Janney, Rashida Jones, Shemar Moore, Lea Michele, Kumail Nanjiani, Jim Parsons, and Adam Scott.

The Television Academy also announced a second round of presenters including Rachel Bloom, Matt Bomer, Carol Burnett, Priyanka Chopra, Viola Davis, Jane Fonda, Sarah Paulson, Gina Rodriguez, Seth Meyers, and Gilmore Girls costars Alexis Bledel and Melissa McCarthy (who won in the Outstanding Guest Actress categories for Comedy and Drama at the Creative Arts Emmys). Who is nominated?

HBO’s Westworld and NBC’s Saturday Night Live lead the pack in nominations this year with a whopping 22 each. We’ll also see proven Academy of Television Arts & Sciences faves such as Veep and Modern Family compete once again, and newcomers This Is Us (10 nominations) and The Handmaid’s Tale (13 noms) are likely to take home some hardware too.

Who has already won?

The Creative Arts Emmys took place on September 9 and 10, recognizing technical achievements, guest acting roles, and reality, documentary, variety, and animated programs. Notable wins included Alexis Bledel for her role in The Handmaid’s Tale, Melissa McCarthy for her hilarity on SNL, and Ava DuVernay for 13th, her powerful documentary about race and mass incarceration in the US. Is there anything new about this year’s show?

While it’s not new, many were surprised to learn this year that there are no gender requirements for performer categories. When Billions actor Asia Kate Dillon, who is non-binary, questioned the Academy on its actor/actress submission choices, they quickly responded that the Academy “supports anyone’s choice to [submit under either category for any reason], and the Academy is not going to do any sort of check.”

Will there be any special acknowledgements?

Each year, the Academy honors television performers and industry personalities who have passed away in the previous year. Sadly, the world lost so much talent in 2017, including Mary Tyler Moore, Adam West, and Jerry Lewis.

Will there be any surprises?

Whether there’s an unannounced presenter, a host bit we didn’t see coming, or a dark horse getting the win, there are always some small surprises in store on Emmys night. Unlike, say, the MTV VMAs, drama and beefs aren’t really a part of Emmys history, but, hey — expect the unexpected.

Avoiding Your Next Haircut? Don’t Make The Same Mistakes As Me

I have such a love/hate relationship with haircuts. While I love the feeling of a fresh look as much as the next girl, I hate having to spend $100+ for a simple cut and blow dry session. During my recent trim, I talked with my hairdresser, Jack Rehak of Jack’s Hair Design in Hinsdale, Illinois, about ways to keep a haircut looking new and best practices for keeping hair healthy. Here's what he had to say!

Here's How Often You Should Cut Your Hair, According To Professionals

I’ll admit it — it had been eight months since my last haircut. My hair had lost its shape, my layers were nowhere to be found, and my ends were begging for mercy. Life got busy over the last few months and I was neglecting my haircare like never before.

My hairdresser could immediately see that I was beyond due for a cut and said I needed to get more taken off than I was hoping. I was definitely disappointed — I'd been working on growing out my hair for a while now, and it just felt like my hard work had completely gone to waste. He explained that getting consistent haircuts is the key to growing out healthy and strong hair, rather than letting it grow and grow until it eventually breaks. So let's dig into the top three things you can do to avoid this scenario!

1. Just Get The Dang Haircut

Also avoiding a haircut like I was? You might want to schedule one at your nearest salon. Like my stylist said, when you wait too long between trims like I did, you risk your hair becoming heavy, dull, and lifeless. When the hair is dry or even dead, it’s nearly impossible for it to hold a curl or style, essentially collapsing on you and taking on more and more heat damage all the while. I know the pain of spending time on a blowout only for it to fall minutes later — it’s the worst.

According to Jack, getting a haircut every 10-12 weeks is the best time frame or your ends will pay the price. Between blow-drying, curling, straightening, sun, and weather, our ends get dry and start to break without the proper care. Getting consistent haircuts allows hair to bounce back, shine, and perform the way we want in a healthy way.

2. Leave-In Conditioners Are Your Friend

His top piece of advice to keep your hair looking and feeling hydrated between trims? Invest in conditioning treatments. Even switching back and forth between them after every bottle should make a big difference in your hair. In the end, navigating your back-and-forth relationship with haircuts often feels like a rollercoaster ride between wanting that fresh look and cringing at the receipt. Luckily, by using conditioning treatments and switching up your products,, you can keep your locks healthy, shiny, and full of life between trims. But take a newly learned lesson out of my book: don't let your ends pay the price for procrastination and just book the haircut.
