10 Safety Rules Every Beginner Slow-Cooker Should Follow

Thanks to This Is Us, slow-cooker safety has been on everyone’s mind since the Super Bowl. Will it catch on fire? Will it burn your house down? Will it implode?! Don’t worry, slow cookers are truly safe these days, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take extra precautions. If you follow our tips below, the only things you’ll have to worry about is which slow cooker to buy and which slow-cooker recipe to make. Before we jump in, just remember a few things: Always place your slow cooker on a flat surface, preferably on a countertop. Don’t fill it more than two-thirds full, and make sure to add some liquid or plenty of water-filled veggies so the bottom of the slow cooker does not scorch. As for the nitty-gritty, see below.

Is it safe to cook frozen chicken/meat in a slow cooker? No, make sure you thaw all frozen meat before putting it in your slow cooker. Since these appliances are designed to cook meat slowly, it spends too much time in the food safety danger zone (40-140°F).

Can a slow cooker be left unattended in the house? Yes, but you should make sure you have read and followed the instructions for your particular model. Most will say exactly how long you can leave it on and plugged in.

Is it OK to leave a slow cooker on overnight? Yes! Breakfast can be a breeze by slow-cooking overnight. Just make sure you’re not leaving it on longer than recommended for your specific model.

How long can a slow cooker remain on? It depends on your model, so make sure you read the directions. Some can be left on for up to 24 hours, but most recommend eight to 12 hours.

For exactly how many hours can food be left on warm in a slow cooker? Typically, it is safe to keep cooked food “warm” for one to four hours. The key is to make sure the temperature is in the safe zone, or 145°F or over. It’s a good idea to use a probe thermometer to test the temperature every hour or so.

How long does a slow cooker last? Contrary to what This Is Us made us believe, most vintage slow cookers are totally safe. However, if your hand-me-down slow cooker has a fabric-wrapped cord or isn’t consistent in its heating, it’s probably time to look for a new one.

Are those plastic slow-cooker liners really designed to be put on a slow cooker? Yes! Just make sure you opt for options that are BPA-free and made of high temperature-safe materials. Lastly, be sure the size fits your slow cooker properly.

Can a slow-cooker insert go in the microwave or oven? Most ceramic inserts are safe up to 400°F — just make sure you leave off the lid as most have a plastic handle or rubber liner.

What about the refrigerator or freezer?Refrigerator — yes. It’s okay to temporarily store your dish in the fridge before cooking. Freezer — no. The ceramic may crack, and it’s not safe to cook meat from a frozen state.

Is it dishwasher-safe? Most slow-cooker inserts and lids are dishwasher-safe. Double check your instruction manual to be sure.

What temperature is low? High? Again, this depends on your slow cooker. Temperature settings on Crock-Pot slow cookers are based on how long it takes food to reach the simmer point of 209°F.

Does the lid need to be left on when cooking? Yes, unless the recipe you are making calls for the lid off. Keeping the lid on your slow cooker helps your meal from drying out and prevents burning. If you are leaving your slow cooker unattended, we recommend keeping the lid on.

A slow cooker is your best friend when it comes to feeding a crowd, and there is no better time to put it to good use than Super Bowl Sunday! These Slow Cooker Chicken Tacos are so rich and tender, from the flavors cooking together low and slow all day. Making the taco shells crunchy is entirely optional but totally worth it. It’s one additional step that makes a huge difference, and might have you adding them to your regular weeknight dinner repertoire, too!

For this recipe, you can use a variety of bell peppers – each color offers a different flavor and adds dimension to the tacos. And, if you don’t have a slow cooker, you can make this on your stovetop, too, as more of a skillet-style fajita, by sautéing the bell peppers and onion over high heat to get a great char. Cook the chicken separately, then toss them together with the taco seasoning. If you’re looking for some great veggie options you can try my Sweet Potato or Mushroom Tacos too – there’s truly something for everyone!

This is also one of those slow cooker Super Bowl recipes that you can freeze and save for later. These tasty tacos can be made ahead of time and stored in freezer-friendly containers, so you can thaw them in the fridge the day you want to eat them, then heat them up when dinner time rolls around. A simple trick that I use is to store tortillas in the freezer too, so I always have them on hand. When I want to reheat them, I pop them in the microwave for 15-30 seconds. Easy peasy! So, no matter what celebration comes your way, you’ll be prepared having these tacos on-hand.

If you’re looking for something sweet to bring your meal to the end zone, there’s no better play in your game plan than these Double Chocolate Football Brownies – they are an absolute winner, and utterly delicious too!

Tutorial: Watch How To Make Slow Cooker Chicken Tacos

It can be hard to decide on which slow cooker Super Bowl recipes to make for your crew, but these Slow Cooker Chicken Tacos make the choice so easy. Each bite brings a different flavor that's super addicting. Everyone will be asking for the recipe!

How to Make Slow Cooker Chicken Tacos with Oven-Baked Crunchy Shells

  1. Lightly coat the bowl of the slow cooker with cooking spray, or two tablespoons of olive oil.
  2. Add the chicken, onion, bell peppers, and black beans to the slow cooker.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the lime juice, oil, garlic, taco seasoning, and salt.
  4. Pour the mixture over chicken, onions, and peppers and toss to coat well.
  5. Cover and cook on high for 2-3 hours or on low for 4-6 hours, or until chicken is cooked through.

Assembling the Slow Cooker Tacos

  1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees.
  2. Place the corn tortillas on a half-sheet baking pan, or similar size baking sheet, lined with aluminum foil.
  3. Drizzle enough olive oil over the tortillas to evenly coat each side of the shell with olive oil.
  4. Place about 1 tablespoon of cheese along with about 1/3 cup of the chicken mixture onto 1 half of the tortilla so that the other half can fold over; exact amounts will vary based on the size of the tortilla used.
  5. Repeat until all the tortillas are filled and folded.
  6. Bake in the oven for about 10 minutes, then flip the tacos over and cook about 10 more minutes or until both sides are crispy.
  7. Remove the tacos from the oven and once they are cool enough to handle, add toppings and a fresh squeeze of lime onto the tacos and enjoy while they are hot.
  8. Top with your favorite toppings like Cotija cheese, fresh salsa, fresh cilantro, chopped guacamole, and sour cream

I have such a love/hate relationship with haircuts. While I love the feeling of a fresh look as much as the next girl, I hate having to spend $100+ for a simple cut and blow dry session. During my recent trim, I talked with my hairdresser, Jack Rehak of Jack’s Hair Design in Hinsdale, Illinois, about ways to keep a haircut looking new and best practices for keeping hair healthy. Here's what he had to say!

Here's How Often You Should Cut Your Hair, According To Professionals

I’ll admit it — it had been eight months since my last haircut. My hair had lost its shape, my layers were nowhere to be found, and my ends were begging for mercy. Life got busy over the last few months and I was neglecting my haircare like never before.

My hairdresser could immediately see that I was beyond due for a cut and said I needed to get more taken off than I was hoping. I was definitely disappointed — I'd been working on growing out my hair for a while now, and it just felt like my hard work had completely gone to waste. He explained that getting consistent haircuts is the key to growing out healthy and strong hair, rather than letting it grow and grow until it eventually breaks. So let's dig into the top three things you can do to avoid this scenario!

1. Just Get The Dang Haircut

Also avoiding a haircut like I was? You might want to schedule one at your nearest salon. Like my stylist said, when you wait too long between trims like I did, you risk your hair becoming heavy, dull, and lifeless. When the hair is dry or even dead, it’s nearly impossible for it to hold a curl or style, essentially collapsing on you and taking on more and more heat damage all the while. I know the pain of spending time on a blowout only for it to fall minutes later — it’s the worst.

According to Jack, getting a haircut every 10-12 weeks is the best time frame or your ends will pay the price. Between blow-drying, curling, straightening, sun, and weather, our ends get dry and start to break without the proper care. Getting consistent haircuts allows hair to bounce back, shine, and perform the way we want in a healthy way.

2. Leave-In Conditioners Are Your Friend

His top piece of advice to keep your hair looking and feeling hydrated between trims? Invest in conditioning treatments. Jack swears by the Olaplex conditioning system, specifically the No 3 Hair Perfector. Made with patented OLAPLEX Bond Building Technology™, this conditioning treatment repairs and prevents damage in as little as three minutes. No 3 promises to reduce breakage and visibly strengthen hair, so it’s the perfect assistance to keep ends fresh between cuts. Another conditioning treatments I’ve used and loved for years is the Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask, which is designed to restore moisture, elasticity, and shine to dry hair.

3. Switch Up Your Shampoos

Switching shampoos frequently is a pretty hot tip that I honestly hadn't thought of. Our hair gets used to the same products and grows tired of them, resulting in lackluster locks. Jack’s advice is to switch brands after finishing every bottle of shampoo to bring life back to your hair. Have two brands that you’re loyal to? Even switching back and forth between them after every bottle should make a big difference in your hair. I’m a huge fan of the R+Co Dallas Biotin Thickening Shampoo, which makes my hair look thick and full, as well as the Moroccanoil Hydrating Shampoo, which is so hydrating and gives so much shine.

In the end, navigating your back-and-forth relationship with haircuts often feels like a rollercoaster ride between wanting that fresh look and cringing at the receipt. Luckily, by using conditioning treatments and switching up your products,, you can keep your locks healthy, shiny, and full of life between trims. But take a newly learned lesson out of my book: don't let your ends pay the price for procrastination and just book the haircut.
