This Group of Celebs Sent Ivanka Trump a Thanksgiving Message About Protecting Immigrants

While some of us were enjoying our turkey comas this Thanksgiving, others were using the holiday as a means of protest. The founder of Nasty Gal clothing, Sophia Amoruso, noticed that first daughter Ivanka Trump was following her on Instagram this weekend and used the social sharing platform to send a message directly to the president’s daughter, who is also his close advisor, about her father’s repeal of DACA. A handful of other celebs did the same.

Happy Thanksgiving, Ivanka 💕 #cleandreamact

A post shared by Sophia Amoruso (@sophiaamoruso) on

“Dear Ivanka,” the IG post reads. “I see you’re following me on Instagram. This Thanksgiving I would be grateful if you use the influence you have to advocate for a CLEAN Dream Act by December. Every day that passes without a clean Dream Act means anxiety and deportation for immigrant youth. 7,901 youth have already lost DACA and 122 more will lose it each day. Thank you and Happy Holidays.”

Other celebs like Cara Delevingne, Audrey Gelman, Amy Schumer, Sophia Bush, Alexa Chung, and Olivia Wilde all shared the same post, potentially reaching millions of people with the same message of unity — and, hopefully, catching the attention of their shared follower, Ivanka Trump.

The president announced in September that the GOP-led government would be removing DACA protections from DREAMers. DREAMers comprise nearly 800,000 undocumented immigrants who came to the US with their parents as children and went on to grow up as Americans; DACA protected them from deportation and allowed them to work legally in the country.

The “clean” Dream Act offers a path to citizenship for these same young undocumented Americans. The goal is to stop enforcing deportations and allow DREAMers who have graduated high school, earned a GED, or are on their way to completing one or the other, to move toward legal citizenship after growing up in the US.

With the ACLU petitioning for a bipartisan passing of a clean DREAM Act, and more people speaking out in favor of DREAM, the weekend’s Instagram appeal to Ivanka Trump marks yet another way of trying to get the president to listen to people’s concerns about rescinding the act.

Over the weekend, two senators suggested adding the changes to DACA into an end-of-year spending bill. Senators Dick Durbin (D) and Lindsey Graham (R) told CNN that with the many security issues both parties agree on, they should be able to reach a consensus on spending that would see the Clean DREAM Act added in as a line item alongside increased funding for frontline border security. The senators explained that protecting DREAMERs who are currently in the country while beefing up border wall security would make both parties happy.

They hope that the end-of-year spending bill is passed before the December 8 deadline.

On May 2, 2023 at 12:01AM, the WGA strike went into effect. The same day, NBC announced that SNL would be immediately impacted, and that the May 6 episode would not air live. Instead, the series will show reruns for an unknown amount of time.

SNL will air repeats until further notice starting Saturday, May 6,” NBC said, via Variety. The upcoming episode was supposed to be hosted by Pete Davidson, who was a regular cast member until last May, and musical guest Lil Uzi Vert. Other hosts this season have included names like Jenna Ortega, Pedro Pascal, Steve Martin and Martin Short, Quinta Brunson, Keke Palmer, and Ana de Armas.

Additionally, according to The Hollywood Reporter, NBC sent an automated email confirming the show was taking place...then sent a follow-up retracting it. Considering SNL was scheduled to break for their hiatus on May 20, they only lost a few weeks of their end-of-spring season.

Why is the writers strike happening?

Writers in the entertainment industry (represented by the Writers Guild of America) are demanding fair wages from the bigger Hollywood studios (represented by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers). The strike began on May 2 at 12:01 because the contracts ended at midnight.

Where is the strike?

Picket lines are in New York City and Los Angeles.

What shows will be impacted by writers strike 2023?

In addition to SNL, other late-night television shows are being immediately affected, includingThe Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and Late Night with Seth Meyers.

We don't know yet whether the upcoming seasons of scripted shows and movies will be affected.

Has this happened before?

Yes. During the 2007-2008 television season, the WGA went on strike for the same reason they're on strike right now: fair compensation.

What happens during a writers strike?

During the writers strike, television and film writers that are a part of the WGA stop working until they can reach a fair contract with the larger studios. The 2007-2008 strike lasted from November 2007 until February of 2008.

Is the writers strike 2023 over?

Yes, the writers' strike is officially over! On September 24, after five straight days of negotiation, the WGA and the larger studios + streamers finally came to a tentative agreement on a brand new three-year contract. If they end up signing the contract, the writers' strike (which has lasted for 146 days) will finally come to an end. Picketing officially ended Sunday night, and after the WGA councils voted to agree to AMPTA's contract, the writer's strike officially ended at 12:01 September 27.

Late night shows like The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon and Saturday Night Live, as well as daytime talk shows like The Kelly Clarkson Show, can now return to air. That means we could see brand new episodes by the first week of October!

However, because other scripted programs are still being affected by the SAG-AFTRA actors' strike, production and post-production for your favorite TV series and movies is still at a standstill.

A Cinderella Story isn't just a movie — it's honestly a cultural moment. The costume montage, the spastic colons and synchronized swimming, the rain in this drought... even Gavin Degraw singing over the One Tree Hilltrailer on the DVD stand out! Everything about this film is iconically ingrained in our collective conscious, making Hilary Duff and Chad Michael Murray the Y2k blueprint for many of the "It" pairings we know and love today.

We last left our Princeton royalty preparing for their freshman year of college, dreaming of happily-ever-after — or at least graduation — and that was that! But in this era of reboots, I've often wondered what happened to our OG tortured poets after the credits rolled. Luckily, I'm not the only one! Chad Michael Murray just tee'd up a sequel, and yes that's me you hear squealing right now. Here's everything we know about what's to come for everyone's fave modern fairytale!

Is there a part two to a Cinderella story?

Photo via Warner Bros Entertainment Inc

There's Another Cinderella Story, starring Selena Gomez and Drew Seeley, but that's more so a part of a series of "Cinderella stories" rather than an actual sequel. So far, we haven't gotten a follow-up on our Princeton-bound faves.

Has "A Cinderella Story 2" been announced?

There's been no formal announcement yet, but that doesn't mean all hope is lost. During his press tour for Mother of the Bride, Chad Michael Murray told ETthat he's definitely interested in bringing Austin Ames back. He said that even his daughter told him, "You need to make another one of these, Daddy," after she watched A Cinderella Story for the first time.

His response to the idea? "Here you go, Hil. From me to you, let's do it!" — referring to Hilary Duff, of course! The timing couldn't be better either, given that Hilary just gave birth to her fourth child and could hypothetically be available to film in the coming months...just saying!

Again, there's no official information about this project yet, but with a main piece of the puzzle on board, we're one step closer to my own personal happily-ever-after — a real sequel to A Cinderella Story once and for all.
