‘This Is Us’ Creator Dan Fogelman Promises a ‘Complicated’ Follow-Up to Season 3’s Shocking Fall Finale

Fans of This Is Us have come to expect the unexpected from the NBC family drama, and on the season 3 fall finale this week, we got just that when a shocking twist ending upended some major plot points. Fair warning: There are spoilers ahead!

Leading up to the fall finale, the show had been focusing on the mystery of what Jack Pearson (Milo Ventimiglia) experienced in Vietnam, including the presumed death of his brother, Nicky (Michael Angarano).

However, on the Tuesday, November 27, episode, titled “The Beginning Is the End Is the Beginning,” it was revealed that Nicky’s name was not on the list of soldiers lost during the Vietnam War. The show then cut to a shocking reveal of an older Nicky (played by Griffin Dunne) collecting his mail in the modern-day timeline — meaning he is still very much alive.

“There’s a complicated story that’s going to be told very quickly when we come back on the air, and it’s a story about what happened between Nicky and Jack,” This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman told Deadline about the plot twist, hinting that the long-lost Pearson brother would become a fixture on the show for the remainder of the season. “It’s very complicated. There’s a lot more to be told and it’s coming very soon.”

Nicky’s survival wasn’t the only bombshell on Tuesday, though. Throughout the first half of season 3, the mystery “her” has also been a point of confusion for viewers. As we learned on Tuesday, the woman in question is Rebecca Pearson (Mandy Moore) — but it still isn’t clear what her situation is, or why Tess and Randall seem so anxious about the visit.

This Is Us season 3 is scheduled to return to NBC on January 15 at 9pm ET, and Fogelman promises “a big second half of the season.”

When carbs, cheese, and bacon come together to create an epic game day snack, pure magic happens. In this easy appetizer recipe, bacon is intertwined with strips of puff pasty, baked to perfection, then served with a perfectly melty beer cheese sauce. These bacon pastry twists are just the thing your tailgate spread needs! Each bite delivers the perfect balance of bread-y crunch and meaty chew. The best part? These will only take you about half an hour to execute. You will *not* want to miss out on bacon pastry twists. Here's how to make 'em!

Just look at that texture! When baked, the bacon pastry twists get a nice layer of browning that brings forth some tasty, tasty crunch. In our recipe, they are balanced beautifully against a rich, dippable beer cheese sauce that'll leave everyone coming back for more.

Ingredients For Bacon Pastry Twists

For the twists:

  • 2 sheets puff pastry
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 20-22 bacon strips
  • 1 egg, lightly whisked
  • 2 Tbsp sesame seeds
For the beer cheese dip:
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup cream cheese
  • 1/2 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 tsp garlic salt
  • 1 cup beer (we used Budweiser)
  • 2 Tbsp freshly chopped parsley
  • 1/2 tsp dried chili flakes

Directions For Making Bacon Pastry Twists

1. Preheat your oven to 400 F, then line two large baking trays with parchment paper. Unroll the puff pastry sheets with the wide end facing you. Sprinkle on the shredded cheddar cheese. After that, arrange the bacon on top of the cheese. Slice the puff pastry into thin strips, cutting in between each piece of bacon.

2. Twist each of the bacon pastry strips so you get an even twist.

3. Place the bacon pastry twists on your baking trays, making sure to not place them too close to each other, as they will expand in the oven. Brush each pastry with the whisked egg and give the tray a generous sprinkle of sesame seeds.

4. Place in the oven for 20-25 minutes, until the pastry is golden brown and the bacon is crisp.

Instructions For The Cheese Dip

5. While the pastry twists are cooking, make the beer cheese dip. Place all of the ingredients except the beer, parsley, and chili flakes into a saucepan. Heat everything on medium until melted and thickened. Add in the beer and stir again, then simmer gently for five minutes.

6. Pour the dip into a heat-proof serving dish, then place it under the broiler until the top is slightly charred. Carefully remove from the oven and sprinkle with parsley and chili flakes. Serve the bacon pastry twists and beer cheese dip together. Mmmmm, dippy cheesiness!

We are head over heels in love with all things Bridgerton. The relationships, the characters, the Gossip Girl-meets-Jane Austen storylines. After waiting far too long for a sneak peek of season 3, Netflix *finally* released exclusive images that continue to have us shipping Polin (Penelope and Colin, of course.). Not only that, but Netflix shared more images from the upcoming season and it looks like things will be heating up in the new season!

Here's the latest season 3 Bridgerton news, as well as some fan theories that might just carry us into season 4.

Will Penelope and Eloise happily reunite in season 3 of "Bridgerton?"

Image via Liam Daniel/Netflix

In an exclusive image obtained by Entertainment Weekly, it seems like former best friends Penelope and Eloise are having a conversation. Judging from the expression on Penelope's face and Eloise's folded arms, it appears that things are still tense between them. Jess Brownwell, Bridgerton's show runner told the outlet, "I'm rooting for them," while admitting their friendship breakup is, "...a chance for the two of them to grow and learn about themselves..."

It's interesting to see if Eloise will remain icy towards Penelope after the abrupt end of their friendship in Season 2.

When is Bridgerton season 3 is coming out?

Image via Liam Daniel/Netflix

Netflix announced on December 12 that season 3 of Bridgerton will release in two parts in 2024: Part I on May 16 and Part II on June 13th. Until then, catch up on the first two seasons, as well as the prequel series Queen Charlotte, on Netflix!

What is the new season of Bridgerton about?

Image via Liam Daniel/Netflix

After giving up on whether Colin could ever return her feelings, Penelope decides to find a husband who will give her the independence she needs as Lady Whistledown. But when Colin offers to help her along the way, and his help begins to pay off, he realizes that his feelings for her might be more than platonic.

Why is Penelope wearing more blues and greens than her staple yellows?

Image via Liam Daniel/Netflix

It's clear throughout the first season that each family has their own color representing the journey ahead of them — the beloved Bridgertons wear sophisticated blues and lavenders while the Featheringtons wear loud yellows as they try to climb the social ladder.

This is very intentional, and throughout season 3 we'll see Penelope transition from her staple yellow dresses into more greens and blues, a symbol of her union with Colin Bridgerton. Costume designer Sophie Canale confirmed this color theory to People, sharing that the green dress Penelope wears in episode four was a nod to her future relationship with Colin. After all, green *is* a mix of yellow and blue.

In the beginning of the season, Penelope and her mother are both wearing green instead of their usual lemon yellow. But instead of a pastel green like her previous dress, this one is very vibrant and tinged with a lot of warm tones. Even if Penelope is growing, the ties to her family are still strong.

Considering season two ended with Penelope getting into a fight with Eloise — and overhearing Colin say he would never court her — it makes sense that Penelope would turn more into her family than ever before. However, in an on-set interview with This Morning, Coughlan wore a dress that appears to be a muted seafoam, meaning it features more blue than yellow.

If Penelope wears lime at the beginning of the season and seafoam at the end, it's a perfect representation of her emotional arc. She moves from feeling overshadowed by her family to being embraced by Colin (hopefully sooner rather than later!!), and it creates a whole new color just for her.

Penelope is, and always will be, a mix of both Featherington and her love for Colin. Good thing for us, Canale takes us on that journey with her.

Will Benedict still play a role in season 3 of Bridgerton?

Image via Liam Daniel/Netflix

The third book in the Bridgerton series, An Offer From A Gentleman, focuses on Benedict Bridgerton and Sophie Beckett. Even though the third season of the show will revolve around Colin and Penelope, fans are anticipating an important plot point could still happen this year.

"I'm reading Benedict's book, and between the ball the Bridgertons threw where he met Sophie and when they meet again there's a gap of two years, enough for the unfolding of Penelope and Colin's [arc]," lovin_da_dix says on Reddit. "My theory is that the Bridgertons will throw the ball this season, we would briefly see Sophie and the writers would carry the storyline through season 4."

Not only would a ball give us an excuse to see Colin and Penelope dance again, but it would also set up the next season of the show! That is some serious script planning. But considering the characters in Bridgerton love throwing a party, and a ball would fit right in with the book's timeline, this is one theory we could totally see coming true.

Does Daphne appear in season 3 of Bridgerton?

Image via Liam Daniel/Netflix

No, Daphne will not be in season 3 of Bridgerton. Actress Phoebe Dynevor revealed she wouldn't return to the series at the Sundance Film Festival inJanuary of 2023.

Which couple will season 3 of Bridgerton be about?

Image via Liam Daniel/Netflix

Bridgerton season 3 will focus on Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington. This is the first time fans will get to see a couple they've been rooting for since the beginning, and I can't wait!

Here's Your First Look At Season 3 Of Bridgerton

Image via Liam Daniel/Netflix

Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) — who moonlights as town gossip Lady Whistledown — touted pale blue dresses that complemented her red hair, styled in soft waves.

"Do contain your excitement," the show tweeted, adding on Instagram, "The author is about to become the main character."

And according to Nicola, fans are in for a wild ride. The actress described her season as "magical," "romantic" and "quite scandalous" while speaking at Tudum's Brazil event, per Shondaland.

Image via Liam Daniel/Netflix

Colin doesn't look too shabby either.

Image via Liam Daniel/Netflix

(Hopefully) a happy couple in the works!

Image via Liam Daniel/Netflix

...Or not as happy as we thought.

Image via Liam Daniel/Netflix

It looks like the Bridgertons just caught wind of shocking news.

Image via Liam Daniel/Netflix

It looks like the loving couple are still enjoying marital bliss in season 3 of Bridgerton.

Image via Liam Daniel/Netflix

Colin's expression makes us want to ask him, "Why so serious?"

Image via Liam Daniel/Netflix

Colin may be showing Penelope potential suitors she can engage with.

Something is really concerning Lady Violet, but Francesca (played by Hannah Dodd who replaces Ruby Stokes) and Hyacinth seem to be taking it in stride.

Keep up to date with our Bridgerton news and let us know in the comments what you're looking forward to seeing in the new season!

Notable Astrological Dates For 2024

Lunar North Node conjunct Chiron in Aries

From January 1 to May 15, all healing modalities and spiritual advancements will experience quantum leaps as deep healing is required for many of us now.

The Aries-Libra nodes touch upon Chiron the asteroid associated with wounds and healing in our relationships. A very relationship-heavy year that will create breakthroughs in knowing our worth and establishing autonomy and freedom from our bonds. There may be an increase in divorces as it will emphasize this need to find purity of purpose in our relationships instead of settling into the dogmatic conforms of unions. In a thriving union, will allow one to participate in joint ventures involving boldness.

The Aries North Node will set a tone for us to know our worth and involves the need to release what's tethering you from reaching fulfillment. This can be in relationships, careers, or living situations.

Jupiter conjunct Uranus in Taurus

From March 20 to May 20, Jupiter magnifies Uranus’s innovative, creative, and unexpected energy. We can expect changes in the financial market and shifts in our approach to climate change. Uranus can throw curveballs in our process involving structures (land ownership, real estate, corporate culture) and technology, or reinventing our approach will be the way to find stability. This requires being open to innovation and change to flow smoothly—research advancements before working up your confidence (A.I. technology, currency, stocks, investment ventures).

Jupiter enters Gemini

On May 25, the planet of abundance, growth, and expansion goes under the rulership of the communication planet Mercury. Since Jupiter in Gemini will square Saturn twice this year, the media world is set for a huge overhaul in 2024. Some parts of this industry will dissolve, opening new and different growth channels (A.I. technology).

Uranus sextile Neptune

From June to December 2024, the pull to explore spirituality (dreams, intuition work, occult) and experience awakenings will be powered up and will be a major outlet for attracting income. Creating specialized programs such as spiritual retreats, masterclasses, or new modalities will be widespread.

Uranus sextile Pluto

From mid-July to mid-November, unique opportunities to create a new life are available to us as significant breakthroughs occur in the fields of technology, astrology, creativity, and art take place. It will be a great outlet to explore the integration of technology and art while studying how to preserve its integrity. This will also open up discussions about how spirituality and science can create an outlet for healing advancements.

Jupiter in Gemini square Saturn in Pisces

On August 19 and December 4, Jupiter will focus on Saturn’s three-year-long process of dissolving established structures and social beliefs to build new ones. Saturn, the planet of past karma will help us analyze everything we have built in the last 30 years, and Jupiter, the planet of expansion will pinpoint what wrongs need to be made right. The financial markets could be unstable this part of the year, so these dates should be considered involving investments.

Pluto enters Aquarius

The beginning of a new era, a completely new paradigm, is heralded as Pluto stays in Aquarius for good, from November 19, 2024, to March 8, 2043. This is the official threshold of experiencing the Age of Aquarius. Pluto disseminates structures, and ever since 2008, it has prepared us for this moment to rebuild a new epoch. It can be a shift in our collective consciousness involving societal needs. Everything will be about collaboration and the bigger picture instead of capitalist/self-serving views. Advancements in technology will take a quantum leap and the way to best feel grounded in this shift is to focus on service and inner work.

Eclipses In 2024

Full Moon Lunar Eclipse in Libra: March 25

This is the completion of a cycle instated during the October 14, 2023 eclipse. Venus, the ruler planet of this lunar eclipse in conjunction with Saturn, will place the scope of importance in focusing on the purity and soul-ascending aspect of loving relationships. This is a period to either evolve or part ways in our relationships. This will require peeling away the layers of old perceptions and beginning a new and improved approach.

Solar Eclipse in Aries: April 8

This solar eclipse is the cosmic initiation in you becoming aligned with healing and building a better relationship with self. With this powerful eclipse in alignment with Chiron, courage and shining the light of your true self will enable you to cross the threshold of change while attracting incredible opportunities. Become the hero of your story, and many will honor your path.

Full Moon Lunar Eclipse in Pisces: September 17

As Neptune is the lead contributor to this lunar eclipse, it will hold space for us to review structures that have been built. Jupiter will magnify and add pressure toward communication, how we receive information from the media, and how we utilize technological advances such as AI.

New Moon Solar Eclipse in Libra: October 2

This is the final sweep of the Aries-Libra axis of eclipses. A new outlook on relationships will be the primary focus during this solar eclipse. There will be a great polarity, and the true natures of our personalities will be revealed. The asteroids, Lilith the feminist, and Juno the devoted wife, in exact alignment with this event, will help many realize their true feelings regarding love and values. Honesty is the best policy.

Short-Term Benefits Of Dry January

Since a Dry January isn’t a permanent change to your drinking habits, some of its effects will last only as long as you’re holding off on alcohol. One short-term advantage many people experience is improved sleep. Alcohol is known to disrupt our rest, especially during the second half of the night. So it’s not surprising that 71% of participants in one UK study reported better sleep during their month of abstinence. A good night’s rest “can help improve mood, concentration, and overall mental performance,” notes Dr. Shah.

Another unexpected benefit of ditching booze is improvements to your skin. “Vitamin A, a key nutrient for keeping skin hydrated, is broken down by alcohol,” says Dulan. “People may notice that their complexion is more hydrated and brighter following the month.”

In just one month alcohol-free, a number of other, more serious health indicators can change dramatically too. A study published in the BMJ Open revealed that when people who were moderate to heavy drinkers gave up the habit for a month, they had improved insulin resistance (a risk factor for Type 2 diabetes) and lower cancer-related blood markers. Other reports have found participants experience reduced blood pressure and cholesterol.

Long-Term Benefits Of Dry January

While most of the benefits of a Dry January occur during the month of abstinence, some continue on into the new year. According to Dr. Shah, “A break can influence your gut and overall well-being for months.” An in-depth survey conducted by the University of Sussex found that 70 percent of people who completed a month “on the wagon” reported generally improved health after the fact, and over half lost weight. Though it’s unclear how long participants kept the weight off, consuming less alcohol is a surefire way to cut calories. The average 5-oz. glass of red wine contains 120 calories, while a 12-oz. serving of beer will set you back about 150.

Dr. Shah also emphasizes that cutting back can help change unhealthy habits beyond January. “Those who complete the month successfully oftentimes have fewer cravings for alcohol and maintain lower levels of drinking,” she says. One report found that nearly three-fourths of participants had “sustained reduced levels of harmful drinking” six months after their booze-free month. The University of Sussex report states that, even into August, Dry January participants were consuming one less drink per week, on average.

Quite likely, these long-term changes come from using the month as an opportunity for a mindful pause. “Dry January is a great opportunity to re-evaluate your relationship with alcohol,” says Dulan. “After a month free, you’ll be able to see the effects it has on your body and evaluate if you’re healthier and happier without that glass of wine or cocktail after work.” Dulan also recommends using the time to consider what other, healthier habits you might incorporate into your lifestyle. If you’re not hitting the bar after work, could you use that hour to squeeze in a workout or quiet your mind with meditation?

To Remember:

If you’re struggling to keep up your resolution for a Dry January, it’s helpful to remember that the exercise isn’t forever. Alcohol will always be there. Before you know it, you can go back to enjoying the occasional after-work martini or date night glass of Pinot — this time with more mindful intention.

So hang in there, abstainers! You’re sure to reap the short-term and long-term benefits of a month without booze.
