Tiny Spaces: A Tiny Home Built Out of Recycled Materials

The tiny home revolution has swept across the nation in a not-so-tiny way, with everything from TV shows and adorable Airbnbs to modern takes on the classic Airstream. Last week in our Tiny Spaces video series, we took you to The Big Apple for a tour of a super chic 400-foot studio in Manhattan. Next up, we’re heading to the woods of Hampton, New Hampshire to get a few lessons in tiny living from couple Chloe Barcelou and Brandon Batchelder. Built by hand, their caravan is perfect for their wanderlusting hearts and even has room for their adorable pet bunny, Cosmos. Check out Chloe and Brandon’s tiny home in the woods, and tune in next Tuesday for a minimalist Brooklyn apartment full of transforming furniture that you *won’t* want to miss.

Chloe and Brandon’s caravan is made out of 90 percent recycled materials, most of which came from the flea market and their friends and family. This gives everything in their home a sweet little story that they can talk about for years to come. The pulley system they use to hoist their expandable roof even has a little flea-market flair!

One of their favorite parts of the tiny home is the gilded hand-painted ceiling they collaborated on together. Brandon traced the lines and Chloe spent a day like Michaelangelo painting a cool blue and gold trellis-like pattern. This feature really brings the eye up and makes the small space feel that much bigger.

Even though their traveling home is tiny, Chloe and Brandon still found space for their pet bunny, Cosmos. Their step-down kitchen left the perfect little hideaway home for their furry friend.

Whether you are looking to build your own tiny home someday or just want to see how Chloe and Brandon managed to use mostly recycled materials, the video below will inspire you to start planning your tiny home travel dreams.

Moving in together is a great way to strengthen your relationship, but moving in together into a studio apartment? That might just be the ultimate challenge in organization and creativity. Fortunately, turning a studio apartment into a space that works for two is totally possible, especially with a few key tricks and small-space living hacks from the pros. Enter Donnie and Nicole. This rad couple showed us how they turned a 537-square-foot apartment in downtown San Francisco into the perfect home that satisfied both of their needs. Between the DIY closets, multipurpose furniture and hidden home theater, Donnie and Nicole’s home is just the inspo you need to embrace micro-living and transform your studio apartment into a space that works for you and your S.O. Check out all their genius small space hacks below, watch the video tour and then head over to our Tiny Spaces series page to see some other totally amazing tiny homes.

1. Think multipurpose. Nicole said that the key to coping in a small space is to buy things that you can use more than one way. You definitely won’t find a lot of unwanted clutter in this minimalist space, where everything has a place.

2. DIY is the best way. Like all couples who are moving in together for the first time, there was some adjusting that had to be done — mainly the addition of a closet for Nicole. Since they were working with an unusual space, Donnie and Nicole chose to DIY the whole thing. And hats off to Nicole for fitting everything she has into this closet. Capsule wardrobe, anyone?

3. Mirrors will double your square footage. See that wall of mirrors on the left? Yep, that’s Nicole’s closet, cleverly disguised. After building the closet, the couple ended up covering the whole thing in mirrors to help make the space feel bigger and brighter.

4. Be brave about your organization. In the search for a more open floor plan, the couple actually got rid of one of their closets (gasp!) and opened up the entryway. All you really need in a foyer is a place to kick off your shoes and store your sunglasses, right?

5. Don’t fixate on “normal” spaces. Sure, a dining room is nice to have when you’re entertaining, but do you use it every day? Instead of taking up valuable space with a massive table for the two of them, Nicole and Donnie opted for a fold-down table and a bench that doubles as storage shelves.

6. Raise the bed. If you’ve got it, flaunt it. Ceiling height, that is. If adding a loft is an option for you, a raised bedroom can save you a ton of floor space and give you room underneath for a home office or guest area.

7. Make Murphy beds cool again. A guest room? In a studio apartment?? Yep, totally possible — just ask this couple. The addition of a loft created an extra space that works quadruple duty as a workspace, storage closet, dining room and guest room.

8. Think vertical. Standing desks are a brilliant solution for a small apartment. You can still have your workspace without filling up your entire apartment with desks and chairs — plus, it’s way better for your health.

9. Raise (and lower) the barstools. Instead of splurging on desk chairs, dining chairs and bar stools, Nicole and Donnie chose adjustable stools that can easily transition from the kitchen bar to the dining room table and the desk space. It’s nice to have options when you get tired of standing ;)

10. Lucite is your BFF. It’s easy for a small space to start feeling cluttered rather quickly. Nicole and Donnie solved this problem by using clear barstools that can be moved around the room and clear storage boxes that are in sync with the light and minimal aesthetic of the couple’s studio.

11. Don’t let the TV dictate the room arrangement. In this space, a good ol’ Netflix binge starts with the quick pull-down of a projector screen. There’s no bulky TV to dictate where the chairs are situated, and you get an enviable home theater with zero floor space sacrificed. Brilliant.

Last week in our Tiny Spaces video series, we took you to an adorable personality-filled San Francisco studio. Next up, were sticking around SF to get some small-space living inspo from Nicole and Donnie Wang and their stylish 537-square-foot studio. Tour their tiny loft to see how they have blended styles, art *and* closet space — not to mention, added tons of hidden storage and transforming furniture. Check out Donnie and Nicole’s modern and minimalist space below, and be sure to head to our Tiny Spaces page to see the rest of the series.

Instead of settling for the usual space-sucking studio floor plan (tiny studio, big closet), Donnie and Nicole designed their own loft. By tearing down the closet (gasp!), they were able to build their own personalized storage/living/dining/sleeping/work space. And not only does it look good, but it is uber functional and ready to accommodate everything from overnight guests to a dinner party.

Besides having their entertaining bases covered, Donnie and Nicole have hidden storage on lock. Donnie built Nicole a wall-length closet to keep all of her shoes (seriously, just look at that collection!), clothes, bits and baubles organized. The giant mirror doors serve a dual purpose for getting ready and opening up the tiny space.

The best part about Nicole and Donnie’s studio has to be all the transforming furniture built into and around their loft. They added a murphy bed so guests have a place to stay or just in case they need an afternoon nap zone. Instead of letting their low square footage hinder their table space, they use a store-away folding dining table for weeknight meals or afternoon work sessions. Who knew so many living spaces could fit into one tiny loft?

Nicole and Donnie even have their Netflix binge time figured out. Talk about a multi-purpose space all around!

Whether you’re looking to build your own personalized loft or just want to see how Donnie and Nicole managed to fit so much stuff and living areas into one tiny space, the video below will inspire you to gut your entire apartment and get to woodworking.

I have such a love/hate relationship with haircuts. While I love the feeling of a fresh look as much as the next girl, I hate having to spend $100+ for a simple cut and blow dry session. During my recent trim, I talked with my hairdresser, Jack Rehak of Jack’s Hair Design in Hinsdale, Illinois, about ways to keep a haircut looking new and best practices for keeping hair healthy. Here's what he had to say!

Here's How Often You Should Cut Your Hair, According To Professionals

I’ll admit it — it had been eight months since my last haircut. My hair had lost its shape, my layers were nowhere to be found, and my ends were begging for mercy. Life got busy over the last few months and I was neglecting my haircare like never before.

My hairdresser could immediately see that I was beyond due for a cut and said I needed to get more taken off than I was hoping. I was definitely disappointed — I'd been working on growing out my hair for a while now, and it just felt like my hard work had completely gone to waste. He explained that getting consistent haircuts is the key to growing out healthy and strong hair, rather than letting it grow and grow until it eventually breaks. So let's dig into the top three things you can do to avoid this scenario!

1. Just Get The Dang Haircut

Also avoiding a haircut like I was? You might want to schedule one at your nearest salon. Like my stylist said, when you wait too long between trims like I did, you risk your hair becoming heavy, dull, and lifeless. When the hair is dry or even dead, it’s nearly impossible for it to hold a curl or style, essentially collapsing on you and taking on more and more heat damage all the while. I know the pain of spending time on a blowout only for it to fall minutes later — it’s the worst.

According to Jack, getting a haircut every 10-12 weeks is the best time frame or your ends will pay the price. Between blow-drying, curling, straightening, sun, and weather, our ends get dry and start to break without the proper care. Getting consistent haircuts allows hair to bounce back, shine, and perform the way we want in a healthy way.

2. Leave-In Conditioners Are Your Friend

His top piece of advice to keep your hair looking and feeling hydrated between trims? Invest in conditioning treatments. Jack swears by the Olaplex conditioning system, specifically the No 3 Hair Perfector. Made with patented OLAPLEX Bond Building Technology™, this conditioning treatment repairs and prevents damage in as little as three minutes. No 3 promises to reduce breakage and visibly strengthen hair, so it’s the perfect assistance to keep ends fresh between cuts. Another conditioning treatments I’ve used and loved for years is the Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask, which is designed to restore moisture, elasticity, and shine to dry hair.

3. Switch Up Your Shampoos

Switching shampoos frequently is a pretty hot tip that I honestly hadn't thought of. Our hair gets used to the same products and grows tired of them, resulting in lackluster locks. Jack’s advice is to switch brands after finishing every bottle of shampoo to bring life back to your hair. Have two brands that you’re loyal to? Even switching back and forth between them after every bottle should make a big difference in your hair. I’m a huge fan of the R+Co Dallas Biotin Thickening Shampoo, which makes my hair look thick and full, as well as the Moroccanoil Hydrating Shampoo, which is so hydrating and gives so much shine.

In the end, navigating your back-and-forth relationship with haircuts often feels like a rollercoaster ride between wanting that fresh look and cringing at the receipt. Luckily, by using conditioning treatments and switching up your products,, you can keep your locks healthy, shiny, and full of life between trims. But take a newly learned lesson out of my book: don't let your ends pay the price for procrastination and just book the haircut.
