Netflix's Thriller Show 'Bet' Is 'Squid Game' Meets 'Cruel Intentions'

If you feel like you've already seen every twist a teen drama can throw at you, think again, because Bet is here to raise the stakes (literally).
The newest Netflix obsession blends high school angst, elite privilege, and the rush of high-stakes gambling into one wild ride. Set at the exclusive St. Dominic's prep, where card games actually determine social status, Bet is a live-action adaptation based on the beloved Japanese manga Kakegurui.
This dark, stylish series follows a mysterious transfer student named Yumeko, who has a dangerous addiction and an even more risky secret. Here's everything you need to know about the show before you ante up.

What is 'Bet' about?

Netflix
At the heart of Bet is Yumeko, a sharp teen orphan with a talent for gambling (and a thirst for revenge). After being expelled from her previous school, she lands at St. Dominic's Prep, an elite academy where everything runs on wagers. There, gambling isn't just a pastime; it's basically the school's foundation.
Students rise or fall based on their debts, and those who lose big become "house pets," essentially servants to their more fortunate peers.
However, Yumeko isn't just there to play the game; she wants to beat it. With the help of her friend, Ryan, she sets her sights on the school's student council while simultaneously working behind the scenes to uncover the truth about her parents' mysterious deaths.
Is 'Bet' based on a book?

Netflix
Bet draws inspiration from the hit Japanese manga Kakegurui, written by Homura Kawamoto and illustrated by Tōru Naomura.
First published in 2014, the manga (which actually means "compulsive gambler") gained a global fanbase, and 18 volumes have been released to date.
"When the Bet creative team set out to develop a series inspired by Kakegurui, we knew there was no point trying to reproduce the original, as it stands on its own and works perfectly," explained creator Simon Barry.
"Instead, we chose to be directed by the spirit Kakegurui inhabits in tone, audaciousness, and fun. To that end, we made something 'birthed' from the source material that inspired a new take–one that pays homage to it and doesn't try to replace it."
Who's in the 'Bet' cast?

Netflix
The cast of Bet is led by Miku Martineau as Yumeko, who's most known for her roles in Kate and Star Trek: Section 31. Her friend Ryan is played by Ayo Solanke; meanwhile, Eve Edwards plays Mary, one of Yumeko's rivals at St. Dominic's.
Other cast members include Clara Alexandrova as Kira, Hunter Cardinal as Michael, Anwen O'Driscoll as Riri, Aviva Mongillo as Dori, Ryan Sutherland as Suki, Dorian Giordano as Chad, Laura Afelskie as Runa, and Emma Elle Paterson as Blake.
