Some of us love makeup 鈥 the playful colors and transformative powers of makeup can be a way to express ourselves, change up our look and/or transform ourselves. Some people aren鈥檛 into makeup or decide to ditch the cosmetics for various reasons (like these celebs who aren鈥檛 afraid to go makeup-free). Whatever you personally think, it鈥檚 totally cool. What鈥檚 not cool is shaming others if they don鈥檛 conform to what you expect from them. Even if you鈥檙e not into what they鈥檙e doing, TBH, that doesn鈥檛 really matter 鈥 they鈥檙e probably not doing it for you. That鈥檚 why it鈥檚 so utterly cringe-worthy that Alicia Keys is facing controversial buzz around her decision to go makeup-free at this year鈥檚 VMAs.

Alicia Keys

Those who were not impressed decided to make their thoughts public (of course)鈥

*sigh* Though this could justifiably spawn a million think pieces about what society demands of women鈥檚 appearances, Alicia brought it down to one simple tweet.

鈥淵鈥檃ll, me choosing to be makeup free doesn鈥檛 mean I鈥檓 anti-makeup. Do you!鈥 Though she did go into more detail about her decision back in May in her essay for Lena Dunham鈥檚 Lenny Letter, saying, 鈥淚 hope to God it鈥檚 a revolution. 鈥楥ause I don鈥檛 want to cover up anymore. Not my face, not my mind, not my soul, not my thoughts, not my dreams, not my struggles, not my emotional growth. Nothing.鈥

This isn鈥檛 about shaming anyone who chooses to wear makeup, it鈥檚 about having the space to not HAVE to feel like you need to wear it. Want to wear makeup? Awesome! Don鈥檛 want to wear makeup? Awesome! Want to wear makeup sometimes and not other times? Awesome! Bottom line: It鈥檚 your choice, just like it鈥檚 Alicia鈥檚 choice, and whatever choice you make is鈥 wait for it鈥 awesome. Like Alicia said, 鈥渄o you,鈥 because you are beautiful inside and out.

Some are totally loving Alicia for it鈥

While others are totally inspired鈥

Again, makeup-fabulous or makeup-free, do you and be proud!
