Henry Cavill's New Period Fantasy Movie 'Highlander' Is For The 'Outlander' Obsessed

The classic 1986 film, Highlander, is finally getting a reboot, with none other than Henry Cavill as the star. The original film, which starred Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery, was a box office hit and we can't wait to see how Amazon MGM Studios, United Artists, and John Wick director Chad Stahelski breathe new life into the movie.
Here's everything you need to know about Amazon MGM Studios' Highlander, starring Henry Cavill.
Where can I watch Highlander?
The new Highlander team hopes we'll be able to see the movie in 2027 or 2028. When we hear an official release date, you'll be the first to know.
Will Henry Cavill be in Highlander?
Yes, Henry Cavill will star as the leading role in the movie. We'll also see Russell Crowe, known for his role in the Oscar-winning film Gladiator, who will act as Cavill's immortal mentor, Ramirez, according to Deadline. This role will involve lots of action and stunts, but this won't be a problem for Crowe, considering his previous roles in Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, 3:10 to Yuma, and his most recent project Land of Bad are entirely action-packed.
Who's in the Highlander cast?
Here's the full Highlander cast (so far). Check back here for updates!
- Henry Cavill as Connor MacLeod: an immortal warrior.
- Russell Crowe as Ramirez: MacLeod's mentor.
- Marisa Abela as an immortal swordswoman and one of MacLeod's exes (via THR).
What is Highlander about?

Netflix
Highlander is about a Medieval Scottish Highlander who realizes he's an immortal warrior, and enters a battle across hundreds of years. (Sounds a little reminiscent of the century-hopping Outlander, no?) The new movie will reportedly feature some deeper and more complex plot and character details, but it promises to be just as epic.
"We're bringing it forward from the early 1500s in the Highlands to beyond present-day New York and Hong Kong. There's big opportunity for action…and it's a bit of a love story — but not how you think," Chad Stahelski told Collider.
"My selling point to [Henry] was, look, you've got a guy that's been alive for over 500 years," Stahelski continued. "He's the last person in the world that wanted to be in this situation. So you get to cover quite a broad spread of a character arc… and you get to experience someone that's trained over 500 years and sort of played [with many types of] martial arts."
How many Highlander movies are there?
The original Highlander movie came out in 1986, and there have been four theatrical films total, as well as one made-for-TV movie. Because of its major success it also turned into two live-action television series, an animated series, and an anime film.
Where is Highlander filming?

THR reports Highlander begins filming in September 2025, and will shoot around places like Scotland, England, and Hong Kong.
