The series is set decades before the events of the 2017 and 2019 It movies. Season 1 takes place in 1962, and the story will explore how the evil in Derry started—and yes, that includes Pennywise’s origin.
Here’s the official logline from HBO Max:
“Set in the world of Stephen King’s IT universe, It: Welcome to Derry is based on King’s IT novel and expands the vision established by filmmaker Andy Muschietti in the feature films It and It: Chapter Two.”

So the show will dive even deeper into the town’s creepy past over time.
Is there a trailer for It: Welcome to Derry yet?

Yes, there's a trailer! It opens on a young boy hitchhiking in the snow, saying he wants to go “anywhere but Derry.” A new family moves into town, and right away, they’re met with some eerie energy. Kids at school talk about missing children. There's a turtle Easter egg on the school sign (a nod to The Dark Tower fans), and things get stranger from there—creepy smiles, voices in the pipes, and a final shot of Pennywise giggling from the sewers.
Was It: Welcome to Derry at Comic-Con?

Yes! The series made a big splash at Comic-Con this year. There was a special panel and fan event on Saturday, July 26, where fans got an early sneak peek of the premiere episode. Andy and Barbara Muschietti, who worked on the original It movies, were there to present new footage.
That’s not all. On Friday, July 25, and Saturday, July 26, Pennywise-themed pedicabs were roaming around San Diego, offering free rides, and brand ambassadors will be distributing spooky treats in the convention center and Gaslamp area.
