If you has asked us who should be cast as young Dumbledore in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts sequel (which will star Eddie Redmayne along with Johnny Depp as the villainous Grindelwald), we probably could have given you a full list of fitting actors. But chances are, Jude Law wouldn’t have popped into our minds. That’s why we’re shocked by the news that he’s been given the beloved role, while also agreeing with hardcore Harry Potter fans who think that this news is strangely perfect.
Now, the internet is buzzing with the news that the 44-year-old two-time Academy Award nominee and Young Pope star will be stepping into the role of Albus Dumbledore, showing us the popular Hogwart’s Transfiguration Professor and future Headmaster decades before he ever meets Harry Potter.
While every male British actor in the industry, from Christian Bale to Benedict Cumberbatch, was apparently considered for the role, director David Yates told Variety, “Jude Law is a phenomenally talented actor whose work I have long admired, and I’m looking forward to finally having the opportunity to work with him. I know he will brilliantly capture all the unexpected facets of Albus Dumbledore as JK Rowling reveals this very different time in his life.” So magically exciting!
And fans of the franchise seem to be totally on board with the casting choice…
We’ll be able to catch Jude Law as the new Dumbledore when Fantastic Beasts 2 hits theaters on November 16, 2018.
