Margaret Qualley and Ryleah Nevaeh Whittet in Maid on Netflix

Netflix

Maid

Margaret Qualley delivers her most chilling performance yet as an impoverished mother who is doing everything she can just to provide for her daughter, even if it means saying goodbye to her dignity in the process. After escaping an abusive relationship, she tries to navigate the hurdles of being a single parent with a near-empty wallet. She takes up a job as a housemaid, yet learns it is nearly impossible to escape the confines of poverty. This limited series, based on the memoir by Stephanie Land, will open your eyes to the brutal realities of the overlooked and downtrodden members of America’s lower class.

Anya Taylor Joy in The Queen\u2019s Gambit on Netflix

Netflix

The Queen’s Gambit

You don’t have to know a lick about chess in order to lose yourself in the wonderful world of The Queen’s Gambit. Everything from the gorgeous color palette to the period costume design, as well as Anya Taylor-Joy’s award-winning performance, will keep you on the edge of your seat the whole time.

Richard Gadd in Baby Reindeer on Netflix

Netflix

Baby Reindeer

Most people, when they have a certified stalker following them, would get a restraining order, right? Most people, when they learn their stalker went to jail for her creeper tendencies, would run in the other direction and never look back… Most people. But not lead protagonist, Donny, who can’t help but find himself secretly flattered by his stalker, Martha. Eventually, in a paradoxical twist of events, he finds himself obsessing over his stalker to nearly the same degree that she’s fixated on him. This brilliant British limited series, based on real-life events, will leave you in a flood of tears by the time the final credits roll around.

Milly Alcock and Julianne Moore in Sirens on Netflix

Netflix

Sirens

You know how in Greek Mythology, sirens are depicted as evil mermaids who lure male sailors in with their enchanting beauty? In mythology, we get a one-sided portrait of the cruel seductresses who leave men utterly helpless to their charms. But what if we were to look at the story through the sirens’ lens? What drives some women to use their attractiveness in order to gain power in this corrupt and patriarchal world? And should they really be villainized for it? Sirens takes the mythological trope of the formidable seductress and flips it on its head. It reminds audiences that you should never judge a woman without knowing her full story.

Leo Woodall and Ambika Mod in One Day on Netflix

Netflix

One Day

Dexter and Emma may have started off as a one-night stand gone horribly wrong, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be friends, right? Cue 20 years of palpable tension, chemistry, and missed opportunities in the making, as Dexter and Emma pretend they haven’t fallen head over heels in love with each other. If your cup of tea is friends-to-lovers romance that’s painfully realistic yet devastatingly beautiful, you’ll fall in love with this Netflix limited series based on the David Nicholls book.

Kaitlyn Dever in Apple Cider Vinegar on Netflix

Netflix

Apple Cider Vinegar

Some people will do anything for attention.. Even if that means pretending they’ve found the cure for cancer. Such is the case for Belle Gibson, a fake cancer survivor con artist, who gets filthy rich off her business as an influencer who swears she’s found the “cure” for the terminal illness. To make matters worse, the twisted events in this story are based on real life. The series chillingly showcases how far some people are willing to go in order to be the center of attention, even if it means destroying lives in the process.

Carla Gugino in The Haunting of Hill House on Netflix

Netflix

The Haunting of Hill House

Spooky girlies, this one’s for you! Basically, all of Mike Flanagan shows are masterpieces — and while I’m personally obsessed with the underrated The Haunting of Bly Manor, it’s no secret that The Haunting of Hill House is an absolute crowd favorite. This devastating ghost story tells a tale of family, heartbreak, and how hauntings take all shapes and sizes. I definitely recommend this for all the Halloween gals out there!

Sofia Vegara in Griselda on Netflix

Netflix

Griselda

Anyone who loves Ozark, Breaking Bad, or crime thrillers in general should queue this up ASAP. Sofia Vergara stars as Griselda Blanco, a ruthless drug lord from Colombia who takes Miami by storm with her cunning ability to control the industry. The show is based on a true story, and it’s incredibly riveting! 10/10, would recommend.

Naomi Watts in The Watcher on Netflix

Netflix

The Watcher

This story technically had my attention before it even became a Netflix show. In 2018, New York Magazine published the true story of a family in New Jersey whose dream home became their nightmare. The family received letter after letter from an anonymous stalker of sorts — fielding threats left and write from the mysterious writer. The story is almost too insane to be true, so Netflix did the logical thing: turned it into a thrilling mini series.

Julia Garner in Inventing Anna on Netflix

Netflix

Inventing Anna

Much like The Watcher, Netflix took to New York Magazine again and turned another bout of incredible reporting into a fictional series with Inventing Anna. If you’ve heard the phrases, “You look poor,” or “I do not have time for this. I do not have time for you,” in a thick, hard-to-place accent…you probably have a little idea about Anna Delvey. But regardless of how much you know about the ever-iconic grifter, this show is a wild depiction of the even wilder true story.

Kaitlyn Dever in Unbelievable on Netflix

Netflix

Unbelievable

I can’t help it that Kaitlyn Dever made it on this list twice. The Booksmart actress seems to have a grip on the Netflix mini series industry — and with good reason! In this show, Kaitlyn portrays a teenager who reports her sexual assault…only for the fallout to be almost as traumatic as the crime she suffered. It’s a raw depiction of what victims tend to go through in this situation, and Dever gives a must-watch performance.
