"Buckle Up": Alexa PenaVega Just Revealed An Unexpected 'Spy Kids' Reboot Update

OMG, you guys. Spy Kids is getting a reboot, and honestly, I’m being struck with a debilitating case of nostalgia. On August 7, OG star Alexa PenaVega took to social media to share the news with fans of the much-adored original movie trilogy. Sharing a TikTok on her account, PenaVega wrote, “Just got off the phone with Robert Rodriguez…Rumor has it… the OSS has been reactivated 😎.” Ahhh! My childhood heart is screaming with excitement.
Growing up with the Spy Kids movies, I was always utterly captivated by PenaVega’s character, Carmen Cortez. All I knew while watching those movies throughout my formative years was that I wanted to grow up to be Carmen Cortez. At the time, I had never seen a female character who was so fearless, so I specifically recall the impact it had on me at that impressionable age. It made me believe that if she can be so effortlessly powerful and strong, so can I. Plus, in a general sense, these movies are just downright fun.
While a stubborn part of me can’t help but think these films should just be left alone, it will be interesting to see what changes are yet to be made in the reboot, especially since it's coming over two decades after the original movie. It’s no secret how much special effects have improved over the years in the cinematic universe. Because Spy Kids is so special effects-oriented, I can see this being a net positive for the franchise. Plus, the fact that we might be seeing some familiar faces from the original movies will be sure to fulfill my millennial heart.

Who Will Be Returning To the Spy Kids Reboot?

While I’m sure the new cast of actors will be fantastic, it will be great to see some familiar faces from the original Spy Kids movies returning to the reboot. Although we don’t have much info yet on who is going to be making their return, it’s likely based on Alexa PenaVega's post that she’ll be back for more action-packed onscreen adventures.
Furthermore, it looks like filmmaker Robert Rodriguez will be returning behind the camera, as Vega’s TikTok post suggests. Rodriguez made an Instagram post celebrating Antonio Banderas’s birthday, so it looks like the two are on close enough terms that it would be amazing for Banderas to return to the Spy Kids reboot. All of this has yet to be confirmed, but I'm crossing all my fingers and toes.
