How to Keep Your Private Data Safe on the Internet

Thanks to a recent vote by the Senate and the House of Representatives, our internet privacy may be in grave danger. The new rule would roll back privacy protections for consumers that were put into place last year and allow internet service providers (ISPs) to collect and sell users’ data without permission.

The bill was presented to the president last week, and it’s expected to pass. Naturally, people are freaking out right about now; the thought of third parties buying your info is beyond creepy. Here’s what you can do to protect yourself.

Get a VPN

The first thing you should do is make it as difficult as possible for anyone looking to get your info to do so. Incognito mode on your browser isn’t gonna cut it, either — the only thing that does is keep what you search out of your computer’s local history. Your ISP can still see it, so you’ll need a little something more. You can start out with a virtual private network (VPN). VPNs encrypt your internet traffic and decrypt it when you get to your destination, so it’s much harder for anyone to snoop on what you’re doing.

VPNs are available for all your devices, so we recommend getting one ASAP. PCMag‘s favorites for your computer are NordVPN, Private Internet Access, and VPN Unlimited. NordVPN and Private Internet Access also have mobile apps, so you’re covered there too. Just so you know, you should switch off your VPN when you try to use Netflix, because they’ll block you if they detect you’re using a VPN. And any websites you log in to can see what you’re doing on their site (although clothing and other retailers aren’t really as likely to sell your info like your ISP would).

Get Encrypted

If you want to protect your messaging activity, check out Hop for encrypted emails and Signal for encrypted texts. Nobody needs to know what you were texting your mom or your partner yesterday.

Another thing you should encrypt is your financial information. You probably know that PayPal acts as a middleman so that you aren’t sharing your bank info with third parties, but sometimes sites don’t accept PayPal as a method of payment. In those cases, you should use an app like Privacy to create virtual credit cards (essentially, burner cards) that you can use anywhere that asks for a credit card number. You can set limits on the cards and close them whenever you need to. There’s no reason anyone should have your financial data, so protect it!

Get Comfy With Tor

Your ISP isn’t the only one who tracks your internet usage; your browser (Chrome, Safari, etc.) does too. So if you don’t like that idea, get comfy with Tor. Tor “prevents somebody watching your internet connection from learning what sites you visit; it prevents the sites you visit from learning your physical location, and it lets you access sites which are blocked.” Sounds handy, right? It is. And it’s also available on mobile (iOS and Android). Double up Tor and a VPN for max protection.

Use Common Sense

This one is probably a no-brainer, but we’ll say it anyway. Trust your gut. Only visit sites you trust, and especially only give your info to sites you trust. Try to only visit sites with HTTPS in the URL, and whenever you enter payment information, it’s a good idea to check for the little green lock icon in the address bar.

If you follow these guidelines and keep ALL your info on a need-to-know basis, you should be reasonably safe and secure. Of course, none of these steps guarantee that nobody will ever see your info, but they will make it a lot harder for the people trying.

Apple unveiled their latest and greatest today, most notably introducing the iPhone 15 suite, improved iCloud storage plan options, and the Apple Watch Series 9. The new products bring forth some reasonably big changes to Apple’s existing technology – the company saying ‘goodbye’ to the Lightning port is just one example. Read on for everything, new and improved, that was just announced at the Apple Event.

The iPhone 15

New iPhone

The latest iteration of iPhone is the iPhone 15, and it will also be available as the iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and the iPhone 15 Pro Max. They’ll come in 5 colors: white, black, pink (rejoice!), green, and yellow. The Pro models are fitted with a strong, lightweight titanium casing, and have a 6.1-inch screen, while the Plus models boast a 6.7-inch screen.

No More Lightning Cables

And yes, you read it right – the Lighting charging ports are no more for new Apple products, including the iPhone 15. From now on, users will only be able to use a USB-C cord (that, according to Apple, ushers in potentially faster charging times) for charging their devices. The change makes things fairly easy for cross-functional purposes, as USB-C cords are also compatible with non-Apple products.

Action Button

The Lightning port isn’t the only thing that Apple said they’re retiring. The new iPhone no longer has a ring silencer slider on the side. Instead, it’s now called an “action button.” The action button will still silence alerts, texts, and calls by default, but will also be capable of other handy commands you tell it to complete.

Sharper-Than-Ever Camera

As expected, the iPhone 15 variations boast an updated camera system. The company’s stepped it up so that the smartphones have a 48-megapixel main camera with a larger sensor than ever before. The back camera also has a new “nanoscale coating” for handling lens flares and lowlight with expert skill. The camera system reportedly has more enhanced color, better image stabilization, and a 4K cinematic video mode.

Improved Connection

The new iPhones also feature an ultra wideband chip, which expands the device’s connection strength. This chip allows iPhones to connect to other devices from up to three times farther away. It’s incorporated into the “Find My’ technology that you may already use to find your friends, devices, and more.

Apple made sure to address pricing for the new iPhone, as well as existing models:

  • iPhone SE will start at $429.
  • iPhone 13 will start at $599.
  • iPhone 14 will start at $699.
  • iPhone 15 will start at $799.
  • iPhone 15 Plus will start at $899.
  • iPhone 15 Pro will start at $999.

The new iPhones start shipping and hitting stores on September 22.

Store More With New iCloud+ Plans

Apple also announced that starting September 18, iCloud+ will offer 6TB ($29.99/mo) and 12 TB ($59.99/mo) storage plans, which expands their previous largest offering of 2TB ($9.99/mo). The new plans are ideal for large photo and video libraries, or users of Apple’s Family Sharing.

Apple Watch Series 9

Shout Out To Sustainability

The company introduced the Apple Watch Series 9, which is reportedly Apple’s first-ever carbon-neutral product. They’ll also be making another sustainability effort by eliminating leather materials from the Apple Watch. The wristbands will no longer be made of leather, but instead, a material called “fine woven,” which is made from 68% post-consumer recycled content.

With The Tap Of A Finger

The most notable news surrounding the new Apple Watch is the introduction of hand gesture controls. With the watch on, users can tap their index finger and thumb together twice to answer (or end) phone calls, play and pause music, or snooze alarms. Siri can also take commands via the watch now.

Apple Watch Tune-Up

The Series 9 watch is now made with a custom S9 chip for faster processing, according to Apple. The screen features a new edge-to-edge display that doubles the brightness levels, plus the model is available in a new pink color!

Apple noted these updated prices for the Apple Watch:

  • Apple Watch SE starts at $249.
  • Apple Watch S9 starts at $399.
  • Apple Watch Ultra 2 is priced at $799.

Amid dire concerns that TikTok threatens U.S. national security, bans against the app have spread like wildfire. Beyond just government devices, some universities initiated bans, with the latest policy talks going as far as to include personal devices as well. Though it’s unlikely that the platform will be completely banned (there are other proposed solutions, like selling the app or amending its data policies) due to free speech, the possibility of a ban raises another concern: the livelihood of small businesses.

TikTok is a central avenue for small businesses to promote their products and services, with special thanks to its algorithm, says Johannes Larsson, Founder and CEO at Financer.com.

“The platform's unique algorithm, which prioritizes content discovery and virality, has enabled many small businesses to reach and connect with potential customers in a way that wasn't possible through traditional social media platforms,” says Larsson. “Since its growth has been exponential throughout the years as a key marketing channel, the ban triggered the markets for sure.”

TikTok also masters the art of connection. Your For You Page knows exactly what you like to see. This gives small businesses the ability to get closer to their audience and reach more success that way, says saysLynzee Krohne, Founder of branding agency LEO + LAINE.

"On TikTok, brands have the freedom and space to be more casual and less branded," Krohne said. "Because of the nature of TikTok, it allows brands to let their guard down a bit and create content that may be a little more rough around the edges—which helps them appear to be much more authentic to their audience."

Jessica Tran, founder of @jtmobiledetailing, says 60% of customers choose her car detailing shop because they saw it on TikTok. Jaz and Sam Sears, owners and operators of@aztaco.king, grew their business from a food cart in a parking lot to two restaurants in less than 6 months, due to their success on the app. Megan Gersch, a web designer and brand identity creator, says around half of her client base comes from TikTok, which often turn into 4 to 5-figure contracts.

This positive growth for small biz is commonly attributed to the app’s distinctive features that connect creators with consumers, such as live video streaming, a virality-driven algorithm, and the ability for users to personalize their daily feeds.

“TikTok has been a great tool for allowing me to connect with my audience on a deeper level,” says Gersch. “There's a special magic that happens with video marketing that you can't achieve with a text or static image post. Your audience gets to know your quirks, your mannerisms, and they start to feel like they know you, even though you've never met. Every time you see a new video from one of your favorite creators, it's like a FaceTime call from a trusted friend.”

In its absence, small business TikTokers would have no choice but to adapt and pivot their marketing strategies, which is not always easy when they’re doing it DIY-style, says Larsson.

“While small businesses may be able to find success on other social media channels, the competition for visibility and engagement is often more intense [than on TikTok], making it harder for them to stand out. The time and effort required to establish a new presence and create content tailored to the specific characteristics of other platforms could be a significant burden on small business owners.”

Small businesses pivoting to other platforms might face different struggles for exposure, due to consumers being very platform-specific, according to Krohne.

"If [TikTok] brands begin to focus their content efforts on Instagram, they’re up against multiple types of content, and competing in a more content-saturated world," Krohne told us. "TikTok mostly has one content offering, and that’s why it’s insanely popular. There’s a difference between platforms. Brands must diversify their content and show up in other places to keep a steady stream of touchpoints to remain top of mind and memorable."

Though Gersch is no stranger to restrategizing, a potential TikTok ban would still impact her business as a web designer and brand creator.

“I've been a marketer for 16+ years, and one thing that I have learned along the way is that you need to constantly test, look at your analytics, and create where the attention is,” says Gersch. “If TikTok goes away, there will be a huge gap in the market that will need to be filled.”

TikTok recognizes the work that small business owners take on in order to find success, which is why the platform has committed $1 million each to the Hispanic Heritage Foundation to elevate entrepreneurship in the Latin community, and Black Girl Ventures to support Black and Brown women entrepreneurs.

“Five million US businesses turn to TikTok to take us inside their world in a fun, authentic way, and as a result, they are reaching new customers, hiring more employees and growing their business,” says Becca Sawyer, Global Head of SMB for TikTok. “By partnering with HHF and BGV and launching virtual workshops, we're strengthening our commitment to build an inclusive and supportive platform where small business owners and entrepreneurs can share their story, find their audience and drive real business results."

We can’t make a solid prediction for the destiny of the beloved app for now, but we do know that it’ll be dearly missed by small businesses and consumers alike if bans (at any capacity) go through.

“I don't want Tiktok to be banned - not only is it an integral part of my business, but I have also been able to connect with so many incredible people that I wouldn't have met otherwise,” says Gersch. “It's my go-to source for inspiration, learning, and even a good laugh.”

I am unironically one of those ‘don't talk to me before I've had mycoffee’ types of people. It’s what gets me out of bed in the morning! That being said, I’ve tried a lot of different coffee brands in the aim of finding the ones that work best for my routine.

As an ex-baristawho knows that a cup of coffee could either make or break your day, it’s my duty to let you know the coolest, tastiest coffee brands that have my coffee-loving stamp of approval. These coffee brands I’m highlighting are top-notch in terms of quality, have a wonderful taste, and make that morning sip so much better – just about any way you like it. Let’s get into it!

Cometeer

Saying that Cometeer makes my mornings a thousand times better doesn’t nearly do the brand justice! Cometeer is just one of those coffee brands that you need to try to believe.

They sell flash-frozen pucks of espresso, which are made with all kinds of roasts from esteemed coffee brands like Intelligentsia, Counter Culture Coffee, Klatch Coffee, and more. You can find every type of roast from fruity light roasts to chocolatey dark roasts, and none of the ones I’ve tried (I’ve tried about 6 different brands now) ever misses in terms of quality and flavor!

Cometeer’s coffee is perfect for people who want strong espresso shots at home, but don’t want to break the bank buying a brand-new espresso machine (and trust me, their coffee is strong). Since the pods are flash-frozen, the espresso retains its freshness until you thaw it out. This means no fancy machines or gadgets, grinding beans or sweating over the perfect water-to-coffee ratio.

Their flash-frozen coffee pods are super versatile, too. I’ve made iced lattes, iced coffees, hot lattes, hot coffees, and even smoothies using them!

Cometeer’s coffee boxes go for $84 and you get 32 capsules in a box. That’s about $2.60 per serving, which totally beats out your local cafe’s typical prices. Better yet, Cometeer offers a membership service that brings the box price down to $64, shipping out a new box every 4 weeks.

My favorite boxes from Cometeer are the Medium & Dark Roast Box and the Houseplant Box which was made in collaboration with Seth Rogen’s coffee brand, Houseplant.

Jot

Jot is a bottled coffee concentrate brewed to be 20 times more concentrated than your average coffee. Since I like my coffee strong AF, I really appreciate that Jot is versatile when it comes to coffee ratios. You just pour it and dilute it with water or milk (sometimes I do both), making it super easy to control the strength. Like Cometeer, you can easily prepare Jot coffee iced or hot using cold or hot water or milk!

I’ve tried a range of Jot’s concentrated coffees, but I find that even their Original brew – the one I was most skeptical to try out since I also like my coffee sweet – was so smooth with a sweet finish. Though the OG is good, I think the Chocolate Hazelnut flavor is even better.

I typically mix Jot with a 1-1 ratio with my favorite syrups and cold water to get an iced latte going. Right now, my favorite milk to use is MALK’s new cashew milk, which is undoubtedly the perfect soulmate for bold coffee. Aside from drinks, I’m loving adding a serving of Jot to my overnight oats!

One bottle of Jot is $26 and supplies 14 servings of coffee ($2 a serving). You can snag flavors like Vanilla, Caramel, and their Spring Seasonal flavor which is heavy on the fruits + florals. Jot also offers a monthly subscription, lowering the price per bottle to $19.50 ($1.40 a serving) – but we’ve got an exclusive discount code for you!

Use code ‘BRIT45’ for 45% off your first subscription order. Add Jot to your list of coffee brands to try ASAP!

Copper Cow

I’m a sucker for cool packaging, which admittedly is why I adore this coffee brand, Copper Cow. But that’s not all I love! The taste of their coffee roasts is just unbeatable based on all the beans I’ve tried in this lifetime. And I fear I’ve tried a lot.

Copper Cow specializes in Vietnamese coffee, which is typically stronger, darker, and sweeter than the American coffee I might get from a coffee chain like Starbucks or Dunkin’. What's more is their products are made with 100% natural ingredients and are sourced from sustainable farms over in Vietnam.

I’ve been obsessed with Copper Cow’s Classic Black Ground Coffee, which is perhaps their most basic ground coffee flavor. Even though it’s pretty no-frills, the classic flavor is so smooth, I could drink it black (and I almost never drink black coffee)! Their Churro Ground Coffee is a close second, which highlights real cinnamon that’s ground right into the coffee!

Aside from coffee grounds, Copper Cow also has some pretty cool single-serve pour-over packets that make the art of the pour-over accessible. They also sell creamers and ready-to-go latte packs to make amazing coffee with ease.

One bag of Copper Cow coffee grounds is $17, but you can choose to go with a monthly or bi-monthly subscription that brings it down to $14.45.

Intelligentsia

Intelligentsia Coffee is one of those famed coffee brands that all caffeine connoisseurs should know. Hailing from Chicago, the roastery-cafe hybrid brand is fully dedicated to coffee culture and maintaining the highest quality for their products. They have cafes in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Austin, Boston, and even in Korea!

I admit I haven’t tried a wide range of Intelligentsia’s offerings, but one product I have to brag about is their Black Cat Espresso roast. The beans are by far the best I’ve tried in my moka pot (which can make surprisingly good espresso), delivering a smooth but punchy sip. Of course, I’m not brave enough to drink espresso on its own, but if I did, this one would make the experience fun and yum.

You can snag a bag of beans on theirsite for $16.50 with an option for delivery every week or up to every 4 weeks. I’ve seen the Black Cat Espresso roast sold for less at Target, where it’s shoppable at $15.

When anyone asks me for my favorite movie-viewing experiences, A Simple Favor (starring Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick) always makes the list. When I first watched the movie, I knew next to nothing about the plot, and it made the viewing experience ten times better, especially since I had a watch party with a bunch of friends who *also* had no expectations. I know A Simple Favor 2 is going to be just as sexy, unexpected, and gripping as the original. Keep reading for everything we know about the new movie, from the A Simple Favor 2 release date to casting announcements!

What is A Simple Favor 2 about?

Image via Lionsgate

A Simple Favor 2 will see the "return of Stephanie Smothers (Kendrick) and Emily Nelson (Lively) as they head to the beautiful island of Capri, Italy, for Emily’s extravagant wedding to a rich Italian businessman," according to the movie's synopsis (via People). "Along with the glamorous guests, expect murder and betrayal to RSVP for a wedding with more twists and turns than the road from the Marina Grande to the Capri town square."

The first leaked images show the aforementioned extravagant wedding, with Blake Lively's Emily in a wedding dress and Anna Kendrick's Stephanie standing by her side in a gorgeous floral midi dress. While the first A Simple Favor ended with Emily in prison, I have no doubt whatsoever that we'll see her make a grand escape to coastal Italy. The only thing chicer than martinis and crime at home is martinis and crime while basking in the Italian sun.

Is there A Simple Favor 2 movie?

Image via Lionsgate

Yes, Deadline confirmed in May of 2022 that we're getting A Simple Favor 2! The sequel film will be produced by Lionsgate and Amazon Studios, and reportedly, Paul Feig will direct again, while Jessica Sharzer will write the screenplay. I still talk about the script for A Simple Favor, so if Jessica is returning, I will be seated!

When is the A Simple Favor 2 release date?

Image via Lionsgate

I'm expecting A Simple Favor 2 to hit our screens in 2025. Filming was originally scheduled for the fall of 2023, but after the Hollywood strikes delayed a variety of projects, production on the film was pushed to 2024. A Simple Favor 2 will reportedly begin filming in April of 2024.

Who's in the A Simple Favor 2 cast?

Image via Lionsgate

We can expect to see Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick return for this sequel. Henry Golding, Andrew Rannells, Bashir Salahuddin, Joshua Satine, Ian Ho, and Kelly McCormack are also set to star in A Simple Favor 2. As far as dream casts, I'd love to see everyone from Madelyn Cline to Jessica Chastain to Camila Mendes!

How does A Simple Favor end in the book?

Image via Amazon

The A Simple Favor book ending is *wildly* different than the movie ending! Instead of Stephanie turning on Emily and joining Sean, and then Emily getting run over by a car and put in prison for the murder of her father and sister (plus, you know, all the other illegal activity), Stephanie actually takes Emily's side.

In the book, Sean stays in a hotel while Emily gets custody of Nicky. The novel ends with the police finding Emily's ring inside the car of her main victim (a move that was probably orchestrated by Stephanie since Sean gave her the ring), and Emily deciding to pack up her life and leave.
