Got Wanderlust? Travelers Will *Love* These Island-Inspired Side Tables

It’s not always easy to find one-of-a-kind furniture, but Peca, an independent design studio based in Guadalajara, Mexico, has crafted a series of side tables that strike the perfect balance between unique and minimalist. Peca is Spanish for “freckle,” so it seems fitting that these tables designed by Caterina Moretti feature a little something extra that helps them stand out in a fabulous way. The Isla tables are designed with an unpolished marble island that emerges from a tabletop made of bateig blue limestone.

“From the perfectly still water of a lake, unexpected and majestic, rises an island. The effect of the Isla side tables is one of elegant amusement,” Peca’s website says.

The limestone sits atop an oak base and brass-tipped legs for a sleek finish. The table is available in a round and rectangular shape with an accompanying nesting table in each version. Buy the rectangular table set for $720, or the round set for $865. Looks like it’s time to update your holiday wish list STAT!

The Barbie movie premiered on July 21, 2023 and as self-proclaimed movie fanatics and lovers of all things pink, we absolutely loved it. As predicted, Barbie was the movie of the summer, if not the movie of the year. We've been counting down the days until we're able to see it on streaming but now it looks like we'll be able to see it in theaters again. Here's everything we know!

Who's on Barbie: The Album?

Image via Atlantic Recording Corporation/Warner Bros.

Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice's "Barbie World" featuring Aqua (the OG singer) is one of the songs on Barbie the Album that we can't get enough of. Two queens coming together to support the new movie's iconic soundtrack is the *best* way we could've imagined spending the summer.

Pop icon Dua Lipa is also bringing her talents to the film's soundtrack in addition to acting in the movie. In a teaser video she posted, we got a brief cameo of Dua stepping out of her pink heels, Barbie-style, as well as a close-up shot of her blowing a kiss to the camera, already starting the buzz. We love the *totally* disco vibe from her track. Although she revealed on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon that her hit song "Dance The Night Away" almost didn't make it on the soundtrack. At least, not the version we know.

"It's all about Barbie's [best] day ever, and then she starts having an existential crisis and she starts thinking about death," Dua Lipa tells Jimmy. "It's like 'Okay, how do we create a song that encapsulates a really fun disco party but at the same time has these underlying, shaky feelings?'"

Dua Lipa and her collaborator Mark Ronson started leaning into those shaky feelings and that turmoil, but realized it didn't fit the scene the way they intended. They ended up writing "Dance The Night Away" like a score, basing some of the lyrics off the movements of the actors and creating a song that meshed well with the story the cast was already telling. "It was unlike anything I'd done before!" Dua says.

The rest of the lineup for Barbie The Album(available to buy on vinyl, CD, and even cassette tape)was announced on May 25 and includes names like Lizzo, Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice, and *even* Ryan Gosling! Here's the artists involved:

  • Ava Max
  • Charli XCX
  • Dominic Fike
  • Dua Lipa
  • FIFTY FIFTY
  • GAYLE
  • HAIM
  • Ice Spice
  • Kali
  • KAROL G
  • Khalid
  • Lizzo
  • Nicki Minaj
  • Pink Pantheress
  • Ryan Gosling
  • Tame Impala
  • The Kid LAROI
  • Billie Eilish

What awards is Barbie up for?

Image via Dimitrios Kambouris / Staff

Barbie is up for a few Grammys and Oscars (which you can read about below), and on November 27, Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig attended the Gotham Awards in New York City. Margot wore another Barbie-inspired outfit with a black ensemble inspired by 1964's Black Magic Barbie, and my first question is where *I* can get a cape like this!

At the awards show, Greta won an Icon & Creator Tribute, while Ryan Gosling was nominated for Supporting Performance.

What songs from Barbie got a 2024 Grammy nomination?

Barbie received an incredible number of Grammy nominations this year. "Dance the Night" by Dua Lipa and "What Was I Made For?" were both nominated for Song of the Year, and "What Was I Made For?" was also nominated for Record of the Year. Ryan Gosling's "I'm Just Ken" is nominated for Best Song Written for Visual Media, and "Barbie World" by Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice Featuring Aqua is nominated for Best Rap Song. "Barbie" has also been nominated for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media (Includes Film and Televison)!

Is Barbie eligible for Oscars?

According to EW, it looks like Barbie could be nominated for nine Academy Awards this season. Given the reception by critics and fans alike, we're feeling confident that the movie will take home at least one Oscar (if not more), but there are so many amazing films this year we don't know what the awards show will look like! Here's every category Barbie could be nominated in:

  • Best Picture
  • Best Director for Greta Gerwig
  • Best Lead Actress for Margot Robbie
  • Best Supporting Actor for Ryan Gosling
  • Best Original Screenplay
  • Best Original Song for Billie Eilish and Finneas' "What Was I Made For?"
  • Best Production Design
  • Best Costume Design
  • Best Makeup and Hairstyling

Who wrote the song What Was I Made For?

Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas O'Connell wrote "What Was I Made For?" for the Barbie soundtrack. Director Greta Gerwig told the duo, viaThe LA Times, that she wanted "Barbie’s heart song — the song that is deep inside her core that she doesn’t even completely know is there but that she starts to hear more clearly throughout the film.”

The song became my personal favorite on Barbie the Album, and spawned a viral TikTok trend celebrating the beautiful, messy parts of womanhood. “It was so moving, dude. It was so, so touching,” Billie tells Variety about the trend. “I feel like I helped bring people together, and it felt so special. I wasn’t expecting to have women around the world feel connected.”

The Barbie movie came back to theaters for one week starting September 22. But there's more! Not only did we get to see the entirety of the film (including that one detail in the Barbie ending we totally missed the first time) but there was also brand new post-credit footage that Greta Gerwig handpicked herself!

“We made Barbie for the big screen, so it’s a thrill to be able to bring it to IMAX, the biggest screen of all,” Gerwig says in a statement. “As a special thanks to Barbie fans, we’re excited to share a little bit more of our cast and crew’s incredible work by adding special new footage we hope audiences will enjoy.”

The film premiered in theaters on July 21, 2023 (we were the ones dressed in all pink). We're finally going to be able to stream Barbie from the comfort of our own home on September 5, 2023. You can pre-order it on Amazon for $25 right now, but (according to People) it also might hit Max as early as late September.

Barbie costume designer Jacqueline Durran talked to British Vogue about her work on the film, as well as the fact they only had 11 weeks (!!) to make all of the costumes.

“Barbie is a very useful way to look at different ideas of femininity: what that means, who owns it, and who it’s aimed at,” Durran says in the interview. Some of Margot Robbie's looks are sassy (like her cowgirl outfit) and some are sweet (like her gingham dress), but all of them play a larger role in the film.

"One aspect of the film is self-discovery," Durran continues. "We were able to choose elements of Barbie fashion that were appropriate for those scenes that also gave a subtle nod to her internal journey.”

The first thing we're thinking after watching this trailer is how much the actors really do look like Barbie dolls! The costuming might just become one of our favorite things about the film (not to mention the iconic opening sequence à la 2001: A Space Odyssey).

What Is The Barbie Movie About?

A lot of previous Barbie movies place the iconic doll in fairy tales or navigating high school, but the Greta Gerwig film (which premiered July 21, 2023) takes a whole new approach. The plot focuses on Margot Robbie's Barbie, who gets expelled from Barbieland and goes off to explore the real world.

What's The Big Deal About This Barbie Movie?

MARGOT ROBBIE as Barbie in Warner Bros. Pictures’ “BARBIE,” a Warner Bros. Pictures release.

In a 2021 interview with British Vogue, Robbie says that while playing Barbie comes with both baggage and nostalgia, "people generally hear ‘Barbie’ and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, ‘Oh, well, maybe I don’t...’”

Finding a way to balance adulthood with finding comfort in the things from our childhood (a champagne brunch at the American Girl store anyone?), there's something to be said for getting in touch with your inner child.

In a July interview with Ebony, Issa Rae (who plays President Barbie in the film) talks about the impact that the dolls had on her childhood.

“It was another step on the ladder of my journey with my racial identity, just because I saw how passionate my parents were about me playing with Black Barbies, though I didn’t know it was that serious,” she says. “I was just there trying to make scenes with my Barbies. And I think in some ways, that was my first foray into storytelling and directing.”

Few books have made an impact on BookTok like Colleen Hoover's It Ends With Us. The story follows a woman named Lily who is intrigued by a new relationship with Ryle, but an encounter with her first love Atlas — and the reminders of her past that Atlas carries — complicates everything. When Blake Lively's starring role was announced on January 26, our jaws dropped!

We had high hopes for the adaptation, and when it was announced that Justin Baldoni would develop the film in 2019, we knew the story was in good hands. Baldoni won us over with his role as Rafael in Jane The Virgin, and his feature directorial debut Five Feet Apart made us cry our eyes out. If you're a Colleen Hoover fan, keep reading for everything you need to know about It Ends With Us.

What is It Ends With Us about?

It Ends With Us follows Lily Bloom after she moves out of her small town to start a flower shop in Boston. When she meets Ryle on a rooftop and quickly falls head over heels, it seems like fate. That is, until she comes face-to-face with her first love Atlas. It's a story of strength, deep-rooted relationships, and identity that made waves on social media.

Is Colleen Hoover making a movie out of It Ends With Us?

Yes, we're getting a movie adaptation of It Ends With Us! Filming began in New Jersey the first week of May 2022.

When is the movie coming out?

It Ends With Us will hit theaters February 9, 2024.

Who's starring in It Ends With Us?

Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni (who's also directing) are set to star in the film as Lily and Ryle, respectively. On April 20, it was announced that 1923 star Brandon Sklenar would join the duo as Atlas, and on May 1, Jenny Slate joined the cast as Ryle's sister Allysa. Hasan Minhaj joined the film on May 25 as Alyssa's husband Marshall.

Baldoni also posted a TikTok confirming that after an open casting call, they've found young Lily! Thanks to IMDb and some on-set TikToks, it looks like we'll be seeing Isabela Ferrer starring as the younger version of Blake Lively's character.

Who else is working on the film?

According to Deadline, Lively, Baldoni, Hoover, Steve Sarowitz, and Andrew Calof are all serving as executive producers, while Alex Saks, Christy Hall, and Jamey Heath are producing. Hall is also penning the script for the film.

The first set images from It Ends With Us are from a scene that takes place between Lily and Ryle. While Baldoni is wearing a simple black sweater, Lively is wearing two different shades of pink over a brown dress. I don’t know what it is exactly, but brown butter feels like the “It” girl of cooking at the moment. She’s everywhere, from cookies to lattes to pastas. No matter what dish it is, once I learn brown butter is involved, my ears perk up and I Am Looking. 👀

If you’ve never experienced the magic of brown butter in the kitchen, you might be wondering what it even is. I’m here to tell you that this small culinary luxury isn’t as complicated as you think. Read on for why I think the hype behind brown butter is totally warranted, and how you can use it to craft your tastiest dishes to date.

How To Brown Butter

Making brown butter is super simple. All you need is unsalted butter, a stove, and a pan – preferably a lighter colored one, so you can monitor the browning on your butter. The amount of butter you brown will depend on the recipe you’re making. For example, I made this recipe for espresso chocolate chip cookies that called for ¾ cups brown butter. Therefore, I cut ¾ cups from a stick of butter. So easy!

  1. Place butter in a pan over medium heat.
  2. As the butter melts, swirl the pan occasionally for optimal cooking. Don’t fret if the butter is foamy – this is normal and is part of the reaction you want.
  3. Cook the butter until it has a rich brown color and is emitting a nutty aroma. This is when you know it’s done.
  4. Remove the butter from heat immediately after it’s done, transferring it into a heat-resistant container.
  5. After this, if you wanted, you could strain the brown butter through a fine strainer or cheesecloth to remove the milk solids that hang out at the bottom of the pan. I like to keep ‘em in the mix since they provide that deep flavor.
  6. Let the brown butter cool before using for recipes. If it solidifies, you can melt it again over very gentle heat, making sure to not brown it further.

How To Use Brown Butter

Photo by Paolo Botio / PEXELS

Brown butter makes a tasty contribution to an array of dishes, from savory to sweet. You can use it as a foundation for pasta sauce, toss roasted veggies in it, cover tender cuts of fish with it, add it to baked goods like cookies, cornbreads, and cakes, or combine it with a few sweet ingredients to make frosting.

What is brown butter?

Brown butter is butter that has been, well, browned. It’s the product of unsalted butter that has been melted and briefly cooked down in a heated pan. When executed perfectly, brown butter has a deep yellow-brown color to it and emits a nutty aroma.

What is the difference between brown butter and regular butter?

Brown butter is regular butter, except cooked down. Brown butter retains a deeper, stronger flavor than regular butter since it gets cooked past its melting point.

How long does it take butter to brown?

Based on my experience, it only really takes about 5 minutes for butter to brown. Keep in mind that the cooking time for your brown butter may vary depending on the amount of butter you're using and the heat of your stove. Visual and aromatic cues are key for making brown butter.

What are the chunks in brown butter?

When you brown butter, you’ll notice that there are some specks or chunks that sink to the bottom of the liquid. These chunks are actually milk solids that are incorporated into butter, though when cold, we don’t see them.

Why does brown butter taste different?

The nuanced taste of brown butter is owed to something called The Maillard Reaction. To put it simply, The Maillard Reaction involves certain sugars and proteins that produce the browning of food. When heated up, the sugars and proteins in butter are completely altered – rearranging the entire structure of the butter results in an entirely different taste.
