Wine Flour Is a Thing! Here’s What You Need to Know

Food and wine is an obvious pairing, but now the two have come together in an amazing new way: wine flour. That’s right, the grapes from your favorite vinos are being milled into a flour. The brain child of Hillary Niver-Johnson, it’s called Finger Lakes Wine Flour. You can now officially lose your mind, because it’s nutritious too, like teff flour, and just as unique as coffee flour. Here’s what you should know before you grab some.

1. It’s made from mashed grapes. Typically when wine is made, the pomace, or grape skins and seeds, are discarded. That’s what Niver-Johnson and her team of three collects from local wineries in the Finger Lakes of New York. The pomace is sorted, separated, sun-dried, and milled at a flour mill in Hector, New York.

2. It’s nutrient-packed. Because it’s made from grapes, the wine flour is filled with the same vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that we love from this little fruit. Plus wine flour is rich in protein and fiber. According to the website, each teaspoon of wine flour contains two grams of protein and three grams of fiber.

3. There are several varietals. Just as you aren’t limited to one type of wine, you aren’t limited to only one type of wine flour either. The company has produced Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Pinot Noir, and Gewurztraminer wine flours.

#winewisdom #wednesday 🍇🍷🥂💜 . . . This #flourpower photo may look similar to the one I posted last week...however, it's not the same wine flour and comes from a different grape altogether 💙💜❤️ . Gewürztraminer when translated means "spicy perfume" 😍This wine and #wineflour is probably one of the most unique varieties I have ever come across 🥂The origins of #gewurztraminer are just as spicy as the flavor and I'm here to share some of them with you today 😉👇🏻🌶👇🏻😉 . . . After some hours of research, What I can tell you is that the Gewürztraminer grape originated from ONE grape variety due to a genetic mutation🤔😍 . Depending on the wine region, Gewürztraminer had two different names - Traminer and Savagnin Blanc (not to be confused with Sauvignon Blanc)🥂😍
.
Through a genetic mutation, the green skinned berries turned into pink skinned berries 🍇and soon became referred to as "Red Traminer" or "Savagnin Rose" 🍇 . Although this vine emerged in the late 16th century, it wasn't until the late 19th century that the name "Gewürztraminer" began its use in Alsace. 🥂And even still, it took almost another century for this varietal's name to be officially sanctioned. 😮
.
When we mill the skins, Our whole facility smells like a spicy flower party 🌷💐🌷And when I cook or bake with Gewürztraminer flour I also love to pair it with cayenne or peaches 🍑 😍🌶🍇🥂 . ONE MORE interesting #foodforthought that I will touch on in our next episode of WINE WISDOM ☝🏻Gewürztraminer and Riesling are from the same family! Do you know how?! 🤔😉😘 . . . If you read all of this post, THANK YOU ✨🙏🏻I hope that you learned something new 🥂AND if you think I missed something PLEASE share below 👇🏻Cheers 💜💙❤️ ______________________________________ #wineflour #superfood #antioxidants #senecalake #upstateny #foodart #foodartist #beinspired #vitamins #veganeats #plantpower #wineflourwarrior #fingerlakes #powderpower #pasta #gfree #plantbased #eatrealfood #eatclean #purplepower #flourchild #wineandfood #eatyourwine #protein #fiber

4. It’s a supplement flour. This flour is meant to be used in addition to your regular flour preference, whether that be all-purpose, whole grain wheat, or a gluten-free blend. Wine flour will enrich any recipe with its nutrients, flavor, and of course, wine hue.

5. It’s versatile. Wine flour can be added to anything that regular flour is added to. If you’ve got a hankering for pancakes for breakfast, granola bars as a snack, and homemade pasta for dinner, check out these wine flour recipes to get you started.

6. It’s gluten-free. Those with sensitivity to gluten will be happy to know that all of the wine flour options are 100 percent gluten-free.

Finger Lakes Wine Flour is also the only producer of wine flour on the East Coast. It can be bought from the company’s Etsy store in two-and four-ounce packages. There are also bundle packages available if you can’t settle on one varietal.
