4 Easy Ways to Dig Your Skin Out of a Dull Winter Rut
Now that the cold winter months are pretty much behind us, we can focus on all things spring. We’re preparing for April showers and fully ready to embrace May flowers, but this shift in seasons also signifies changes in our beauty regimen. Our skin tends to take a few steps back during the winter — it’s often extra dry and easily irritated and, worst of all, loses its radiance — so now is the time to get it back to its bright and luminous state by fighting off those winter beauty problems. By adding in new skincare methods and products, and being conscious of what you put in your body, you’ll have your glow back in no time. Here are four makeup-free spring beauty tips to get back to brilliant skin and forget all about cold-weather complexion woes.
Sloughing off that dead, dull layer is a simple way to get brighter skin instantly. Everyone knows that cleansing is totally necessary, but some people forget about exfoliating, which is absolutely crucial if you want to uncover and maintain radiant skin. I’m a big fan of Aveeno Positively Radiant Skin Brightening Daily Scrub ($7) because of its gentle but effective exfoliation. It doesn’t irritate sensitive skin, but still yields noticeable results. After exfoliating every day (or every other day, depending on your skin) for awhile, you’ll notice the dullness dissipating. If you want even more scrubbing action, look for a face scrub with bigger exfoliating beads.
USE PRODUCTS PACKED WITH VITAMIN C
Vitamin C isn’t just something you slam when you feel a cold coming on; it’s a potent antioxidant that brightens the skin, evens out skin tone, fights free radical damage and helps produce collagen. Basically, if you want to get your skin in tip-top shape, try incorporating cleansers, moisturizers and skin treatments (like serums) that pack some vitamin C into your skincare routine so the results show when spring is in full force. OZ Naturals Vitamin C Facial Serum ($22) is one of the most popular skincare products on Amazon with more than 8,000 reviews, so consider this well-loved option if you’re serious about getting radiant skin.
TURN TO TURMERIC
Turmeric has generated a lot of buzz lately, popping up in everything from face masks to hair products. It makes sense: It contains natural anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory agents and is loaded with antioxidants. I’ve recently become a huge fan of turmeric face masks — specifically YLLO Turmeric Face Scrub ($25) — because it literally does everything. This mask reduces fine lines and wrinkles, evens out your skin tone, fades dark spots, sun spots and acne scars, helps to combat oily skin, tightens your pores, fights blemishes and slows (and eventually eliminates) facial hair. It. Is. Amazing! You’ll notice brighter skin after the first use — promise.
DRINK COCONUT WATER BEFORE BED
Chugging water before bed is a good habit to get into for extra overnight hydration, which will improve your skin from the inside out, but drinking coconutwater before bed takes it to the next level. Thanks to its high levels of electrolytes and potassium, coconut water like Jax Coco ($30 for 12) provides nutrients you + your skin might be missing otherwise. Victoria’s Secret Angel Adriana Lima swears by this skin brightening trick, and so does our very own Brit + Co contributor Jenna Birch, who recently put this skin-saving trick to the test. “I’m not going to lie,” she wrote. “I drank one at night and my skin looked better in the morning. I drank another the next night, and my skin seemed to have a more luminous quality. HOLD THE PHONE.”

It can be intimidating to step out on your own and build a business from the ground up. As part of our collaboration with Office Depot, we're talking with Selfmade alum and solopreneur Colette Lawrence, the faith-based motivator and relationship builder behind The M.E.E. Movement, about ways in which women in business can find success.
B + C: How did you know M.E.E. Movement was your business to start?
The M.E.E Movement represents motivation, empowerment, and encouragement for women. It is what represents me. I did not know at first that it was my business to start, but then the thought of monetizing what I loved came to me. It scared me, however. I registered the business in July 2020 and have been slowly building my wings since.
B + C: What's one strategy that's helped you start your business?
Thinking through and researching what the requirements are to start my business, and then asking questions of people who are in the business. Not all advice worked; however, it helped me to figure out what I needed to do and not to do.
B + C: Did you always know life coaching would be your entrepreneurial path?
(Smiles) No, I did not. I 'stumbled" on it. I knew that people were always coming to me for advice and I found that I loved having conversations with them, especially with women, young and old.
B + C: What was your most valuable takeaway from Selfmade?
My most valuable takeaway was the first day of training: Get out of your own way. There were a lot of great moments and important takeaways from every presenter. However, getting out of my own way, pushing past doubts, was for me my most valuable takeaway. Doing something that I had never done before took courage. If I do not focus on what is happening with me mentally then I cannot deliver to my clients successfully.
B + C: What's one piece of advice you would give to female entrepreneurs on the brink of starting?
Get out of your head. You have something to offer. You have what you need to succeed so go ahead and do it.
B + C: How do you stay motivated?
I stay motivated by listening to music and listening to motivational speakers, and sometimes someone will just reach out and talk about the impact that I made in their life. That adds the extra juice or sauce I need to pummel through the day.
B + C: What's your best organizational tip?
Keep a diary and journal. It's the best way for me to keep organized and it also provides a source motivation as I record not only my "losses" but my wins as well.
B + C: Who inspires you in the entrepreneurial space?
Shirley Toliver – She motivates and empowers and makes me always want to show up.
B + C: What has receiving the Office Depot scholarship to Selfmade done to help you start or grow your business?
The scholarship was a blessing in that all the areas that were covered offered valuable information that I needed, from social media to HR. As a new business owner, I needed to know this to increase my own personal awareness in what it takes to run a successful business. The candidness of the presenters made it easy to see myself in their shoes and helped me to realize that I can also get there.
