To be honest, I’ve been feeling pretty cynical about movies lately. As a certified letterbox girly/wannabe cinephile, I can’t help but find myself utterly deflated by the plethora of uninspired Disney live-action remakes being chucked our way, as well as the hollow dulling out of celebrity biopics (not you, Deliver Me From Nowhere — you don't count) that leave me wanting. Plus, it seems like everything is a sequel or a prequel or a reboot now, which sounds nice in theory, yet usually proves to be just another Hollywood cash grab.
Now, I want to make it clear that I understand how much I’m generalizing here. But I haven’t found myself bursting with excitement over a film concept since Parasite, way back in 2019. It wasn’t until I heard about Will Arnett, Bradley Cooper, and Laura Dern’s up-and-coming film, Is This Thing On? That I finally began to feel that wave of thrilling anticipation again for a movie. But what’s the highly-anticipated flick about, anyway?

What is 'Is This Thing On?' about?

The upcoming film, created by Bradley Cooper, stars Will Arnett as a man on the brink of divorce from the love of his life (portrayed by Laura Dern). In order to deal with his pain, Arnett turns to comedy and begins doing stand-up shows at local venues (Bojack Horseman fans, unite).
Internally, he’s struggling deeply over the loss of his marriage. But whenever he’s on stage, he’s able to morph that heartache into comedy gold.

What makes the highly-anticipated film most fascinating, in my opinion, is the fact that the story is based around real-life comedian John Bishop, who was also able to find light during a time in his life that was filled with pain.

It seems like fans are excited for this nuanced role portrayed by Will Arnett, who many believe is an extremely underrated talent. We haven’t seen him in much lately on the big screen, so it will be a treat to see how he navigates this role.
I don’t know about you guys, but Is This Thing On? seems like a totally original breath of fresh air to me.
