Pinterest’s Newest Update Is a Big Win for Gender Identity
Gender identity has been a heavily discussed topic for a while now, but in the wake of that Caitlyn Jenner Vanity Fair cover that debuted earlier this week, it has undoubtedly taken center stage. And so in response to the public’s call to action, Pinterest has decided to make a big change on their social network.
When filling out your profile there is now a custom field where you can enter your preferred gender. If you’d rather not, you can even go ahead and include an emoji of your choice. In a statement about the new feature, the company writes, “Pinterest is all about helping people discover and save creative ideas. And everyone — lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex, ally, straight — is included in that mission.”
While this is a major step in the right direction, Pinterest doesn’t actually display your gender anywhere on your profile. So this update might not necessarily be about sharing your preferred gender with the world, but more about making everyone feel welcome and comfortable using their social network – and that’s something we can definitely get behind.
