This Drumming-Inspired Workout Class Is About to Be Cooler Than SoulCycle
If you’ve ever been to a concert and found yourself admiring the drummer’s impressive arm muscles, that’s no coincidence. Drumming is a WORKOUT. So much so that it’s recently been transformed to become just that – an official workout class. Introducing your new fitness obsession: Pound.
The drum-based workout class is available all across the country and is essentially a new type of class that combines cardio, conditioning and strength training with yoga and pilates-inspired movements. In every move you’ll use Pound’s bright green “Ripstixs,” which are lightly weighted drumsticks engineered specifically for exercising (and rocking out obvs).
While we’re totally down to trade our tired treadmill sesh for one of these classes, we can’t help but feel like we’ve seen it before. And turns out, we totally have. Anyone familiar with Dandiya? If you’re not, it’s a traditional folk dance in India that’s often associated with scenes of Holi. In the dance (which you can learn more about here), you’ll see dancers moving to the beat while also using sticks throughout their routine. Is it exactly the same? No. Pound is definitely more fitness-oriented. Is it inspired by the traditional dance? Totally.
In this ClassPass era we’re living in, it seems like those boring days of repetitive gym sessions might finally be behind us. Whether you decided to venture out and take a class at a circus school (real talk: I did that last week) or try some voga for the first time, this new generation of fitness classes is proving that workouts don’t have to be a means to an end, they can actually be – dare I say it – fun. And for all of us who feel like we’re in a perpetual love triangle with our couch and pizza, that’s kind of the best news ever.
