Selena Gomez’s Mom Admits to Feeling “Helpless” During Daughter’s Kidney Transplant Surgery
We were surprised last week when Selena Gomez revealed that the reason she had been staying out of the spotlight over the summer was a recent kidney transplant surgery in her ongoing battle with lupus. Now, Gomez’s mom, Mandy Teefey, is sharing the fear she faced during her daughter’s health ordeal — and the love she’s experienced since — in a heartfelt and relatable Instagram post about how “helpless” she felt during the worst of Gomez’s illness.
Sharing the now-famous pic of her daughter and BFF Francia Raisa, who donated her kidney to Gomez, Teefey opened her heart to fans in a note that will resonate with any parent who’s faced a lifelong illness with their child.
“This picture is one of the most breathtaking images that will live with me forever,” she wrote alongside the photo on Sunday. “For all those moments of not knowing if we were going up or going down, I can always come back to this picture and know we can always make it back up.”
“As a mother I was helpless, scared, and all I could do was pray for both of them, Francia’s beautiful family,” she continued. “I am pretty sure I am banned from that hospital. Mama Bear was in high gear. Selena gained a kidney, I was able to keep my little girl, but I also gained another daughter…thank you to everyone who was there for Sel, Francia, and our families. We survived from all the love, prayers and God.”
Besides being a mom to Gomez and four-year-old Gracie Elliot, Teefey is a producer, most recently co-producing the Netflix hit 13 Reasons Why with her daughter.
