I’ve been noticing an uplifting trend in movies and TV shows lately, which I’d label a true “net positive” in the media landscape. That trend involves casting older actors as the leads in hit films and shows, who portray characters outside of the finger-wagging/cookie-baking grandparents who just sit around knitting all day long.
In 2025 in particular, I’ve noticed an uptick of movies and TV shows that prove you’re never too old to have the best years of your life ahead of you. There’s no expiration date for excitement, adventure, and growth, no matter what the media has been trying to push on us for decades now. Programs like And Just Like That, Ted Danson’s A Man on the Inside, and The Marlow Murder Club are great examples of this trend, where people past the age of 60 are finally getting the spotlight. And I say, it’s about time!
But one of the best examples of entertainment that masters this uplifting shift in focus is The Thursday Murder Club, starring Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley, and Celia Imrie (AKA the legends of all legends). Yes, all the greats in the cinematic universe have banded together in order to create a hilarious, warm, and riveting adventure, with acclaimed director Chris Columbus working his magic behind the camera. He revealed his desire to add additional films to the original while speaking to Entertainment Weekly, saying, "If the audience falls in love with these characters, I would prefer to do nothing else over the next three or four years than to make one or two more of these films," Columbus revealed. "Because honestly, since [Harry] Potter, this was the best experience in my filmmaking life. I just love working with these four actors. I would come back in a heartbeat for the second and the third films."

The second book in the series is The Man Who Died Twice, and it follows the same quartet you know and love from the first story. But there's a brand new mystery, and it involves 20 million pounds of missing diamonds, New York mobsters, and Columbian mobsters. And when Ibrahim is jumped, things get even more personal.

The film currently on Netflix centers around a team of amateur sleuths (Mirren, Brosnan, Imrie, and Kingsley) who start a “murder club” where they try to solve crimes. When someone actually dies within their community, they have the opportunity to try and solve the mystery within their little club. Yet everything gets way out of hand when they, too, become suspects.
Growing up, the only representation of elders I was exposed to in movies and TV shows portrayed these individuals as sad, trembling figures who could always be found gazing longingly out the window pane, while mourning their more adventurous past. With these depictions of old age being the few examples I saw at the time, it made me believe that growing old was a horrifying nightmare, rather than an opportunity for adventure.
