If there’s one thing that summer requires, it’s easy dressing. Whether you’re into simple no-brainer summer slip dresses or you’re more of a summer halter top and jeans gal, the key is all in the simplicity. For the prep queens out there, we have a celeb-patented combo that will knock your socks off for both a summer wedding and your next BBQ: Introducing the button-down and ball skirt.
Supermodel Carolyn Murphy wore a stunning evening version of the duo to the CFDA Fashion Awards earlier this month. She was there as a guest of J.Crew, and the brand’s preppy style can be seen laced throughout the outfit. (She’s pictured here with Jenna Lyons and the rest of the J.Crew crew.)
She’s made it evening-appropriate through a few key touches, the first of which being a sequined, floor-length skirt for a dose of fancy sparkle. She’s also opened up the neckline for a hint of sexiness, and kept the color palette very muted and tonal. The overall look is sophisticated, simple and chic — very J.Crew!
DJ, model and fitness guru Hannah Bronfman chose to make the look more street-appropriate for a walk around New York City, making the same combo feel totally different and super casual. She’s rocking a denim shirt, cheekily tied at the waist, along with a crisp white tea-length ball skirt. It’s a look that could be dressed down with a pair of red Keds, or fancified with stiletto heeled sandals.
Whichever way you choose, this versatile look is one preppy staple that can work for just about any situation this summer.
