10 Fun Ideas for Grown-Up Family Time During the Holidays

Whether you’re heading home for the holidays from college, your first real job, or with a new S.O. in tow, there’s nothing better than some good ol’ fashioned family fun. When you were little, family time around the holidays probably involved visits with Santa and tons of animated Christmas movies. Now that you and your siblings are older, though, you can devote some time to ~grown up~ family nights. Scroll down for 10 things to try with your fam this season.

1. Try an escape room. Imagine a traditional team-building activity, except you’re immersed in a lifelike, interactive scene — and the clock is ticking. With escape rooms, you and your family can bond by working together to find clues and solve puzzles to escape before time runs out.

2. Go to a comedy show. One thing that most families have in common is a sense of humor. Now that you’re all older, celebrate that commonality by hitting up a comedy club or improv show.

3. Ooh and aah at the zoo lights. You’re never too old to appreciate the festive atmosphere at a zoo during the holidays. Remember when you and your siblings would pile into your family minivan in search of houses with amazing light displays? This is the grown-up version. Some zoos, like the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago, actually sell alcohol on their premises, so you can really embrace the merriment!

4. Host a game night. Keep Monopoly on the shelf. Adult-oriented games like The Voting Game ($10) and The Game of THINGS ($40) are hilarious twists on the age-old family game night tradition.

5. Play OpenTable roulette. If you’re a family of foodies, play a game of OpenTable roulette: Simply open the app, adjust your filters for price and distance, close your eyes, scroll, and click. Whichever restaurant you land on is your destination for the night!

6. Find a skating rink. It doesn’t get much more festive than ice skating during the holidays. Test your family’s athletic skill and head to a local ice rink to get into the seasonal spirit.

7. Try your hand at Topgolf. Topgolf is a bowling-meets-driving-range experience. Instead of aiming for distance, you and your opponents hit golf balls at targets on a driving range. In addition to being a fun activity, Topgolf venues are also known for their trendy environment and great food and cocktail menus.

8. Sing your heart out at karaoke. For a family of songbirds (or aspiring songbirds), hit up a karaoke bar in your home city. Bonus points for revisiting those childhood-road-trip faves.

9. Visit a museum. Museum visits were probably exhausting for your parents when you were younger, but now you can all appreciate a great learning experience in a beautiful museum — tantrums not included.

10. Hang out at a winery or brewery. As craft beer breweries pop up in increasing numbers, your family has more and more options for an awesome night out. If your group appreciates beer or wine, book a tour or experience at a local brewery or winery to bond over some fabulous booze.

I know you've just started thawing off after a very long and very gloomy winter, but it's never too early to think about the holidays IMO. The whole season emphasizes goodness, hope, and love which is way more than a one-month trend. And apparently, Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Garner agree because they're bringing us a new Christmas movie! This duo are best friends IRL, and they've teamed up on projects like The Last Thing He Told Me and last year's Hello Sunshine event. Now, they're working on a brand new project that revolves around our favorite holly jolly lady: Mrs. Claus.

What is Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Garner's new movie?

Image via Frazer Harrison/Getty Images

Mrs. Claus is a new movie coming from Reese Witherspoon's Hello Sunshine production company. Jennifer Garner is also serving as a producer, as well as the movie's star! According to Deadline sources, the movie is being written by Scrambled's Leah McKendrick.

We don't have official plot details yet, but considering the movie called Mrs. Claus, I'd love to see a film about our leading lady taking over for Santa on Christmas Eve. (TBH, it would probably be a little more organized). After hundreds of years with Santa getting all the credit, I think it's more than fair for Mrs. Claus to get her share in the action — and I know if Reese Witherspoon is involved, it's going to be a story full of heart, confidence, and light.

When is Mrs. Claus coming out?

Image via Frazer Harrison/Getty Images

We don't have an official release date for the new movie yet. I'm guessing we'll see it next holiday season! Anywhere after September 1 is a great holiday movie release window because as soon as it starts getting chilly, I am ready for hot cocoa, cozy sweaters, and all the Christmas cookies I can eat ;).

Who else is in the Mrs. Claus cast?

Image via Netflix

There isn't an official cast list yet, which means the studio is probably still holding auditions. I'd love to see anyone from Millie Bobby Brown to Madelyn Cline to Lily Collins and Ashley Park. If you ask me, these Netflix darlings would bring enough Christmas cheer to brighten up the whole movie!

Have Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Garner worked together before?

Image via Apple TV+

Yes, Jennifer Garner is currently starring in Hello Sunshine's The Last Thing He Told Me. They also love posting about each other on Instagram! Even though the two friends haven't been onscreen together, I'm hoping we could see them star in a project together soon.

What other Christmas movies can I see Jennifer Garner in?

Image via Netflix

Jennifer Garner stars in Family Switch, which you can watch on Netflix now. The movie also stars Ed Helms, Emma Myers, and Brady Noon, and you can watch our interviews with Emma and Jen and Brady on YouTube!

I have such a love/hate relationship with haircuts. While I love the feeling of a fresh look as much as the next girl, I hate having to spend $100+ for a simple cut and blow dry session. During my recent trim, I talked with my hairdresser, Jack Rehak of Jack’s Hair Design in Hinsdale, Illinois, about ways to keep a haircut looking new and best practices for keeping hair healthy. Here's what he had to say!

Here's How Often You Should Cut Your Hair, According To Professionals

I’ll admit it — it had been eight months since my last haircut. My hair had lost its shape, my layers were nowhere to be found, and my ends were begging for mercy. Life got busy over the last few months and I was neglecting my haircare like never before.

My hairdresser could immediately see that I was beyond due for a cut and said I needed to get more taken off than I was hoping. I was definitely disappointed — I'd been working on growing out my hair for a while now, and it just felt like my hard work had completely gone to waste. He explained that getting consistent haircuts is the key to growing out healthy and strong hair, rather than letting it grow and grow until it eventually breaks. So let's dig into the top three things you can do to avoid this scenario!

1. Just Get The Dang Haircut

Also avoiding a haircut like I was? You might want to schedule one at your nearest salon. Like my stylist said, when you wait too long between trims like I did, you risk your hair becoming heavy, dull, and lifeless. When the hair is dry or even dead, it’s nearly impossible for it to hold a curl or style, essentially collapsing on you and taking on more and more heat damage all the while. I know the pain of spending time on a blowout only for it to fall minutes later — it’s the worst.

According to Jack, getting a haircut every 10-12 weeks is the best time frame or your ends will pay the price. Between blow-drying, curling, straightening, sun, and weather, our ends get dry and start to break without the proper care. Getting consistent haircuts allows hair to bounce back, shine, and perform the way we want in a healthy way.

2. Leave-In Conditioners Are Your Friend

His top piece of advice to keep your hair looking and feeling hydrated between trims? Invest in conditioning treatments. Jack swears by the Olaplex conditioning system, specifically the No 3 Hair Perfector. Made with patented OLAPLEX Bond Building Technology™, this conditioning treatment repairs and prevents damage in as little as three minutes. No 3 promises to reduce breakage and visibly strengthen hair, so it’s the perfect assistance to keep ends fresh between cuts. Another conditioning treatments I’ve used and loved for years is the Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask, which is designed to restore moisture, elasticity, and shine to dry hair.

3. Switch Up Your Shampoos

Switching shampoos frequently is a pretty hot tip that I honestly hadn't thought of. Our hair gets used to the same products and grows tired of them, resulting in lackluster locks. Jack’s advice is to switch brands after finishing every bottle of shampoo to bring life back to your hair. Have two brands that you’re loyal to? Even switching back and forth between them after every bottle should make a big difference in your hair. I’m a huge fan of the R+Co Dallas Biotin Thickening Shampoo, which makes my hair look thick and full, as well as the Moroccanoil Hydrating Shampoo, which is so hydrating and gives so much shine.

In the end, navigating your back-and-forth relationship with haircuts often feels like a rollercoaster ride between wanting that fresh look and cringing at the receipt. Luckily, by using conditioning treatments and switching up your products,, you can keep your locks healthy, shiny, and full of life between trims. But take a newly learned lesson out of my book: don't let your ends pay the price for procrastination and just book the haircut.
