Sad news is coming out of New York after at least two people were killed and many more injured around 3pm today, when a truck driver ran down multiple cyclists and pedestrians on a busy lower Manhattan bike path before reportedly taking out a gun and opening fire.

According to the New York Daily News, a man in a Home Depot truck (which can be seen in pictures and videos from the scene with a smashed front end) ran down four bike riders who were on a path alongside the Hudson River in Lower Manhattan.

While details are still being sorted out, according to a report from the New York City Alerts Twitter account, “Per PD sources, a fight between two truck drivers lead to one truck hitting multiple pedestrians, and one truck driver opened fire.”

Frank Brito, who witnessed the horrifying events unfold, told the Daily News that he saw two trucks crash into each other before a man in a blue tracksuit got out of one of the vehicles. The man chased someone before shooting five or six times.

Another witness claims, “He shot about 15 times toward the pier and down West St.”

The New York City Police Department updated the public on the situation via Twitter, saying that “a vehicle entered the West St. pedestrian/bike path a few blocks north of Chambers St. The vehicle struck multiple people on the path. There are several fatalities and numerous people injured. The vehicle continued south striking another vehicle.”

However, from there, the police say, “The suspect exited the vehicle displaying imitation firearms & was shot by NYPD.” The suspect was then taken into custody, though no details on the state of his own injuries have been released.

Our hearts go out to everyone involved in this tragedy.
