With the release of Rihanna’s incredible makeup collection, Fenty Beauty, some fans have been trying to figure out why everything associated with the star is branded “Fenty.” While OG fans know that it’s because Fenty is the Barbadian singer’s last name, a lot of other people apparently didn’t realize the significance of the word, and they are losing their minds on Twitter.
Rihanna — the name she’s used since she burst onto the music scene in 2005 with her breakthrough hits “Pon De Replay” and “SOS” — is actually her middle name. Her full birth name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty.
A lot of folks are surprised, but there’s another side to Fentygate: the fans who are annoyed that casual Rihanna supporters never thought to figure out what Fenty meant in the first place.
Rihanna first started using her surname when she began collaborating regularly with Puma. Her latest for the sportswear giant, Fenty Puma by Rihanna, has been applauded by many as the women’s sportswear collection of the year.
Of course, Rihanna isn’t the only celeb to use a middle name or stage name in the public eye. Stars including Nicki Minaj, Natalie Portman, and even Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly have changed their names for their careers.
As for Rihanna? With her makeup collection a runaway hit and her Puma collab looking to sell out, Ms. Fenty appears poised to continue to reign supreme, even if not everyone knows her name.
