What is 'The Institute' about?

Chris Reardon/MGM+
Stephen King's original book definitely starts with a bang. Protagonist Luke Ellis' parents are murdered in the middle of the night, and he's kidnapped by the killers. Later, he awakens in a place known as The Institute, where he and other children with telekinetic and telepathic abilities are being held.
"In this most sinister of institutions, the director, Mrs. Sigsby, and her staff are ruthlessly dedicated to extracting from these children the force of their extranormal gifts. There are no scruples here. If you go along, you get tokens for the vending machines. If you don't, punishment is brutal," the novel's synopsis reads.
There's just one problem: no one has ever been able to flee The Institute, and Luke is determined to escape.
The latest TV adaptation from MGM+ Studios will center on the same gifted children who are brought to The Institute and subjected to appalling experiments in its confines.
