Maybe it’s just me, but I feel as though thriller movies have sort of lost their bite. When I sit down to watch a thriller, I want my heart racing and blood pumping, while I sit on the edge of my seat, and scream at my TV for the protagonist to make it out of their lethal circumstances safely. Yet, for some reason, I just haven’t felt that roller-coaster of emotions while watching a movie from this genre in ages. Every thriller movie I’ve checked out lately has merely been… well, for lack of a better word, “meh.”
Cynically, I began to succumb to the conclusion that flicks within this genre simply aren’t what they used to be… That is, until I saw the Netflix trailer for Night Always Comes starring Vanessa Kirby.
It’s rare when a trailer alone can get my heart racing in such a way, but that’s exactly what happened for me while watching the Night Always Comes teaser on Netflix’s Tudum. The trailer is less than 2 minutes long, yet somehow I already find myself rooting for the protagonist, while dying to uncover how she is able to overcome the lethal obstacles in order to survive her singular night of horrors.

What is 'Night Always Comes' about?

The upcoming film, which is adapted from the book of the same name, paints a bleak picture of a family that has just been able to struggle their way out of a life on the streets. Overcoming homelessness, Lynette works tirelessly to ensure her family’s security, grappling with multiple odd jobs in order to provide for her mother as well as her disabled brother. But when she is faced with eviction, Lynette has no choice but to collect $25,000 in one night in order to secure their home. Since she already knows the horrors of what it’s like to live without food or shelter, she’ll do anything it takes not to go back there again… Including involving herself in life-or-death scenarios in order to get that 25k.

Night Always Comes takes a hard, glaring look at Portland, Oregon, and its current influx of gentrification. In fact, one of the major antagonistic forces in the film is the gentrification itself, making living situations nearly impossible for those who have resided in the area for years. Sure, there are more trendy coffee shops and nicer houses, but at what cost, when it hurts people like Lynette, who’ve worked tirelessly just to afford a roof over her head?
I personally love how Night Always Comes touches on topics that we rarely cover in film, such as gentrification and homelessness. But the major question is: How far is Lynette willing to go in order to keep a roof over her head?
