As much fun as makeup is, it can be a polarizing topic. Some girls love to contour. Some girls really, really don’t. Whether you love setting aside hours to pamper, play and practice with your kit (after all, it is your equivalent of om-ing out or after-work DIY-ing) or you’re more of a roll-out-of-bed-and-go kind of girl, it doesn’t have to be a Team Edward vs. Team Jacob kind of battle, an important point that Zendaya drove home in a recent Instagram video.
In the must-watch 11 second PSA, the 18-year-old singer lays it down for us like this: “I’m not trying to have a preach moment,” she starts. “It should not be a phenomenon if a girl decides to or not to wear makeup. If you want to beat that face down, then beat it down. If you want to go natural, then go natural.” A few finger snaps later, she concludes with the *realist* advice, “You do you, boo boo. Be happy.” Two words: Role. Model.
This isn’t the first time Zendaya has made a level-headed, wise-beyond-her-years statement about beauty in American culture. When controversy wrongly bubbled up over her decision to wear her hair in deadlocks at this year’s Oscars, Zendaya took to Twitter to issue a sophisticated statement that swiftly shut down the tone-deaf criticism. Although she’s not responding to anything specific with this message, her extraordinarily practical words on creating a culture of acceptance are powerful and, needless to say, extremely important. After all, it’s that kind of attitude that’s helping people who may not hold the popular opinion or who do go against the grain feel comfortable enough to live out their true selves IRL (hanky, please). While we scroll through our site to find the hair + makeup tutorials that suit *us* best, will someone please give this girl an advice column, stat?
